Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig, 1912), presents a story of an artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, suffering from the writer’s block who travels to Venice to look for inspiration and where he eventually finds his death. In the meantime, he suffers from depression strengthened by feats of febrile listlessness, pressure in the temples, heaviness of the eyelids that make discontent befall him. The putrid smell of the lagoon hastens his departure, but a strange coincidence makes him change his mind. Nietzsche fue, quizá en primer lugar, un poeta, un escritor-poeta [Dichter] que escribía sobre todo para poetas y que, por fortuna, tal y como él deseaba, ha sido leído desde esa misma pasión por otros poetas, e interpretado artísticamente por ellos como no lo suelen hacer los académicos. En efecto, él siguió con personal radicalidad la senda abierta por uno de sus más queridos modelos, Goethe y su Poesía y verdad, y aquí desearíamos presentarlo en la medida en que ha sido escuchado, pensado y transformado por otro Dichter, el escritor Thomas Mann, en una parte quizá poco conocida de su producción.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje rozważania wstępne autorki związane z planowaną rozprawą habilitacyjną, której celem jest zrekonstruowanie historii polskiego przekładu powieści Der Zauberberg (Czarodziejska góra) Thomasa Manna oraz zanalizowanie jego oddziaływania na polską recepcję utworu. Ze względu na fakt, że obie części powieści zostały przełożone przez różnych tłumaczy, a tom drugi doczekał się dwóch wersji przekładu (z roku 1930 oraz z 1953), powstaje przy tym fundamentalne pytanie o spójność wyłaniającego się z przekładu światopoglądu dzieła. The article presents Ricarda Huchs attitude towards the dictatorship of natio- nal socialism in Germany, from which the writer officially disbanded herself in 1933 by resigning from the membership of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts and concluding at the same time that the Germanness in her opinion does not mean centralization of power, brutal methods and diffusion of people who think differently. This attitude is reflected in the autobiographical text of 1938, Friihling in der Schweiz [Spring in Switzerland] which refers to the experiences and observations of the writer during her stay in Switzerland in 1887-1896. Artykuł oscyluje wokół zagadnień związanych z recepcją dzieła Ricardy Huch w ujęciu współczesnej niemieckiej krytyki literackiej. W roku 2014 została upamiętniona 150. rocznica urodzin pisarki, doktora historii oraz filozofa konferencjami naukowymi, oficjalnymi uroczystościami oraz publikacjami naukowymi. W roku 2017 przypadła 70. rocznica śmierci pisarki. Również w 2018 roku podjęto inicjatywy wydawnicze upamiętniające Huch. Rodzi się zatem pytanie odnośnie współczesnej poczytności oraz znaczenia tematycznie zróżnicowanego oraz gatunkowo różnorodnego dzieła Ricardy Huch.

The changes of translation norms. 1930 and 1953 as contexts of the translation of The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. The author presents the preliminary considerations related to a planned study the purpose of which is to reconstruct the history of the Polish translation of Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain) by Thomas Mann and examine its impact on the Polish reception of the work. Since each of the two parts of the novel were translated by different translators and because the second volume was translated twice (in 1930 and 1953), the translation contexts are very significant.
