Optimized factor of merit of the magneto-optical Kerr effect of ferromagnetic thin films

2000

This paper deals with the optimization of the factor of merit of the magneto-optical Kerr effect of a resonant multilayer cavity including a ferromagnetic film. This optimization is of interest in the context of optical storage technology. Using numerical simulations based on the Green's dyadic technique, we discuss a route to obtain magneto-optical multilayers with a vanishing ellipticity and factors of merit (with respect to the bulk magnetic material) larger than 3 on a broad range of wavelengths, significantly higher than the actual state of the art.

Statistical characterization of the internal structure of noiselike pulses using a nonlinear optical loop mirror

2016

Abstract In this work we study statistically the internal structure of noiselike pulses generated by a passively mode-locked fiber laser. For this purpose, we use a technique that allows estimating the distribution of the amplitudes of the sub-pulses in the bunch. The technique takes advantage of the fast response of the optical Kerr effect in a fiber nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). It requires the measurement of the energy transfer characteristic of the pulses through the NOLM, and the numerical resolution of a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The results yield a strongly asymmetric distribution, with a high-amplitude tail that is compatible with the existence of extreme-inte…

Time Of Flight measurements via two LiDAR systems with SiPM and APD

2016

In this paper, we present an experimental comparison of two LiDAR systems, employing the SiPM and the APD as photodetectors, in terms of TOF measurements differing for the distance of the target and at different intensities of ambient light. The use of the APD represents the conventional approach, while the implementation of the SiPM is innovative. The performed measurements achieved very promising results, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our LiDAR based on SiPM.

Investigating surface magnetism by means of photoexcitation electron emission microscopy

2002

The imaging of surfaces by means of photoexcitation electron emission microscopy (PEEM) has recently received considerable interest. This is mainly due to the extended use and availability of brilliant synchrotron radiation in the soft x-ray regime which generally facilitates studies with surface specificity and chemical selectivity. The most popular application of the x-ray PEEM (XPEEM) technique concerns studies of magnetic systems and phenomena. By exploiting the high degree of circular or linear polarization of the synchrotron light, the magnetic microstructure in both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets can be visualized. In this contribution we demonstrate the unique potential and the v…

Light-by-light polarization control for telecommunication applications

2010

In this work, we report for the first time the experimental achievement of an all-fibered polarization attraction, which can occur in optical fibers at telecommunication wavelengths. More precisely, we have experimentally shown that is possible to all-optically control and stabilize the state of polarization of a 10 Gbit/s telecommunication signal through the injection of a counter-propagating control pump wave. Eye diagrams recordings and bit error rate measurements have shown that this new type of all-optical function, almost lossless and instantaneous has a promising potential for telecommunication applications.

Magnetization dynamics in microscopic spin-valve elements: Shortcomings of the macrospin picture

2007

We have studied ultrafast magnetodynamics in micropatterned spin-valve structures using time-resolved x-ray photoemission electron microscopy combined with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Exciting the system with ultrafast field pulses of $250\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$ width, we find the dynamic response of the free layer to fall into two distinctly different contributions. On the one hand, it exhibits localized spin wave modes that strongly depend on the shape of the micropattern. A field pulse applied perpendicular to the exchange bias field along the diagonal of a square pattern leads to the excitation of a standing spin wave mode with two nodes along the field direction.…

Accessing fast magnetization dynamics by XPEEM: Status and perspectives

2006

Abstract Being already well established as a versatile technique for high-resolution static magnetic domain imaging, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) is now also capturing the field of time-resolved magnetic investigations. Using appropriate operation modes at synchrotron radiation sources, a time resolution of 10 ps and less can be achieved in recent magnetodynamics studies, giving access even to phenomena involving precessional processes.

Applications of near-field optics to the characterization of optoelectronics components

1997

In the race towards purely optical communications, the necessity of producing integrated components is linked to the requirement for the precise characteriza-tion of optoelectronic components. Near-field detection techniques meet this requirement, AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), for instance, can provide the topography of a given sample. In conjunction with these new tools, several different kinds of near-field optical microscopes (NFOM) have appeared. They enable the characteriza-tion of the components with a resolution better than that imposed by the Rayleigh criterion. This is primarily due to the fact that they are sensitive to the evanescent waves. This document presents several areas r…

Hilbert-Huang single-shot spatially multiplexed interferometric microscopy.

2018

Hilbert-Huang single-shot spatially multiplexed interferometric microscopy (H2S2MIM) is presented as the implementation of a robust, fast, and accurate single-shot phase estimation algorithm with an extremely simple, low-cost, and highly stable way to convert a bright field microscope into a holographic one using partially coherent illumination. Altogether, H2S2MIM adds high-speed (video frame rate) quantitative phase imaging capability to a commercially available nonholographic microscope with improved phase reconstruction (coherence noise reduction). The technique has been validated using a 20×/0.46  NA objective in a regular Olympus BX-60 upright microscope for static, as well as dynamic…
