Millimeter wave absorption by confined acoustic modes in CdSe/CdTe core-shell quantum dots

2007

International audience; Taking advantage of the specific core-shell charge separation structure in the CdSe/CdTe core-shell Type-II quantum dots (QDs), we experimentally observed the resonant-enhanced dipolar interaction between millimeter-wave (MMW) photons and their corresponding (l = 1) confined acoustic phonons. With proper choice of size, the absorption band can be tuned to desired frequency of MMW imaging. Exploiting this characteristic absorption, in a fiber-scanned MMW imaging system, we demonstrated the feasibility of CdSe/CdTe QDs as the contrast agents of MMW imaging.

Gas-phase supersaturation effects on morphology properties of ZnO nano and microstructures grown by PVT

2016

A systematic study of the morphology evolution of ZnO nanostructures grown by physical vapour transport was carried out. The evolution of the shape with the growth time is shown to depend on the different gas-phase supersaturation and temperature conditions encountered in the crystallization zone of the tube furnace. The observed morphology transitions are discussed, and a growth model for ZnO nanostructures is given.

Gendering multi-voiced histories of the North American space industry: the GMRD White women

2019

Purpose The authors focus on “writing women into ‘history’” in this study, embracing the notion of cisgender and ethnicity in relation to the “historic turn”. As such, the authors bring forward the stories of the US Pan American Airway’s Guided Missile Range Division (GMRD) and the White women who worked there. The authors ask what has a Cold War US missile division to tell us about present and future gendered relationships in the North American space industry. Design/methodology/approach The authors apply Foucault’s technology of lamination, a form of critical discourse analysis, to both narrative texts and photographic images in the GMRD’s in-house newsletter, the Clipper, dating from 19…

Thermal activated carrier transfer between InAs quantum dots in very low density samples

2010

In this work we develop a detailed experimental study of the exciton recombination dynamics as a function of temperature on QD-ensembles and single QDs in two low density samples having 16.5 and 25 dots/¼m2. We corroborate at the single QD level the limitation of the exciton recombination time in the smallest QDs of the distribution by thermionic emission (electron emission in transient conditions). A portion of these emitted carriers is retrapped again in other (larger) QDs, but not very distant from those emitting the carriers, because the process is limited by the diffusion length at the considered temperature.

Religious thought and experience in the prison camps

2020

The development of religious thought has often been marked by discord and conflicts be tween religions (and/or individual religious thinkers) and the State, which at times led to the repression of individuals and or groups of people united by the same confession. The Russian case is fully in line with this unfortunate tradition: from Nikon’s schism to the re pression against all religions under the Soviet regime, Russian religious thought has of ten developed in repressive conditions. However, the Russian case has one distinguishing feature, that is, the extensive use of prison camps by Russian and Soviet authorities from the nineteenth century onwards, which has had a direct effect on some…

Impedance and admittance characteristics of Bi2S3 nanowire arrays

2013

Current studies of the electrical impedance and admittance characteristics of the anodised aluminum oxide (AAO) nanoporous arrays and bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) nanowire within AAO membranes are presented. The influence of potential and frequency scan rate effect produced on the real, imaginary and complex electrochemical impedance and double layer capacitance of the AAO nanopore and the Bi2S3 nanowire arrays were studied.

Nonhormonal management of postmenopausal women: Effects of a red clover based isoflavones supplementation on climacteric syndrome and cardiovascular …

2013

The aim of this prospective randomized study was to evaluate a red clover based isoflavones supplementation in the treatment of climacteric syndrome and its effects on cardiovascular risk serum profile. Materials and Methods: The study included 150 healthy postmenopausal women that were randomly assigned to receive phytoestrogens tablets, amounting in a total daily intake of 60.8 mg red clover isoflavones plus 19.2 mg soy isoflavones (n = 75), or placebo (n = 75). The authors evaluated teh following: daily number of hot flushes and Kupperman Index at baseline and after one and three months; serum total, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceri…

Influence of SMSI effect on the catalytic activity of a Pt(1%)/ Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst: SAXS, XRD, XPS and TPR investigations

2004

Abstract The steady-state activity of NO reduction by C3H6, in lean conditions, was studied on a Pt(1%)/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst, in a plug-flow reactor, in the temperature range 100–500 °C. The influence of reductive pre-treatments on the catalytic performance at low temperature (250 °C) was investigated. Enhancement of the activity was found for the catalyst pre-treated in hydrogen at 350 °C as compared to the sample pre-treated in H2 at 800 and 1050 °C. Moreover, transient reactivity tests of NO reduction by hydrogen were also carried out. As previously observed, the sample reduced at 350 °C was the most active catalyst. In both types of reactions the temperature and the nature of pre-treat…

Characterization of cell wall proteins of yeast and hydrophobic mycelial cells of Candida albicans

1991

Cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of blastoconidia and blastoconidia bearing germ tubes of Candida albicans ATCC 26555 was monitored by assessing attachment of polystyrene microspheres to the cell surface, and we found that mature hyphae were significantly hydrophobic. Treatment of intact cells with low concentrations of beta-glucanase (Zymolyase 20T) or proteases abolished or significantly reduced attachment of latex beads to hyphae. This effect paralleled an obvious reduction in CSH of the entire cell population, as measured by an aqueous-hydrocarbon biphasic partitioning assay. Analysis of the cell wall material released by Zymolyase and adsorbed on polystyrene microspheres indicated tha…
