Carbon nanotubes embedded in a polyimide foil for proton acceleration with a sub-ns laser
2021
A series of thin films made of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in a polyimide substrate was designed, fabricated and used for the first time to accelerate protons and C ions by interaction with a sub-nanosecond, high power laser beam (600 J energy and 300 ps pulse width) with peak intensity of about 3 × 1016 W/cm2 on target. Each target was 5 μm thick, and the composite material contained CNTs aligned in different directions in the substrate. The results obtained from the analysis of a Thomson Parabola spectrometer, and of the spots imprinted by ions on a series of PM355 nuclear track detectors, indicate high energies (up to 3 MeV for protons and 9 MeV for C ions) and a marked infl…
Application of Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Ultratrace Analysis of Technetium
2017
This work shows the ability of resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) to determine 99gTc at the ultratrace level. The characterization of the prepared samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and optimization of the RIMS setup for this purpose, as well as the application of the RIMS method to a soil sample, are presented in this article. 97Tc was used as a tracer isotope to determine the amount of 99gTc in a soil sample with RIMS. With 8.8 × 1010 atoms of 97Tc as the tracer, the concentration of 99gTc was found to be 1.5 × 109 atoms per gram of dried sample material, demonstrating the sensitivity of the method. Furthermore, it could be shown that the 97Tc solution contained …
Study of a chromia-forming alloy behavior as interconnect material for High Temperature Vapor Electrolysis
2011
In High Temperature Vapor Electrolysis (HTVE) system, the materials chosen for the interconnectors should have a good corrosion behaviour in air and in H2-H2O mixtures at 800°C, and keep a high electronic conductivity over long durations as well. In this context, the first goal of this study was to evaluate a commercial ferritic alloy (the K41X alloy) as interconnect for HTVE application. Oxidation tests in furnace and in microbalance have therefore been carried out in order to determine oxidation kinetics. Meanwhile, the Area Specific Resistance (ASR) was evaluated by Contact Resistance measurements performed at 800°C. The second objective was to improve our comprehension of chromia-formin…
Fatigue Design of Cruciform Joints including V-notch Effect at the Weld Toe
2014
Abstract The present paper proposes a new and more accurate fatigue life prediction model for fillet welded joints in steel subjected to constant amplitude loading. With the traditional fracture mechanics approach, the greatest difficulty when computing the fatigue life of a welded detail is to determine the initial crack size a0. The classical way to determine the stress intensity factor K (SIF) is by using the following formula Where σ is the applied stress, a is the crack size and g(a/T) the geometrical correction factor which has been determined by Gurney function or similar solutions. This approach is not accurate for short crack because of the singular V-notch behaviour close to the c…
High dynamic resistance elements based on a Josephson junction array
2020
A chain of superconductor–insulator–superconductor junctions based on Al–AlOx–Al nanostructures and fabricated using conventional lift-off lithography techniques was measured at ultra-low temperatures. At zero magnetic field, the low current bias dynamic resistance can reach values of ≈1011 Ω. It was demonstrated that the system can provide a decent quality current biasing circuit, enabling the observation of Coulomb blockade and Bloch oscillations in ultra-narrow Ti nanowires associated with the quantum phase-slip effect.
Fabrication and Characterization of Epitaxial NbN/TaN/NbN Josephson Junctions Grown by Pulsed Laser Ablation
2009
We report fabrication and characterization of epitaxial NbN/TaN/NbN Josephson junctions grown by pulsed laser ablation. These SNS junctions can be used as elements of rapid-single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) logic, which is a promising technology for high speed digital electronic devices. The NbN/TaN/NbN trilayer films were prepared on a single crystal MgO substrate by pulsed laser ablation, and patterned into junctions using a novel process utilizing e-beam lithography, chemical vapor deposition and e-beam evaporation. The quality of junctions was tested by measuring the temperature dependence of the junctions' IcRn values, observed to be quite close to theoretical values.
An argon ion beam milling process for native AlOx layers enabling coherent superconducting contacts
2017
We present an argon ion beam milling process to remove the native oxide layer forming on aluminum thin films due to their exposure to atmosphere in between lithographic steps. Our cleaning process is readily integrable with conventional fabrication of Josephson junction quantum circuits. From measurements of the internal quality factors of superconducting microwave resonators with and without contacts, we place an upper bound on the residual resistance of an ion beam milled contact of 50$\,\mathrm{m}\Omega \cdot \mu \mathrm{m}^2$ at a frequency of 4.5 GHz. Resonators for which only $6\%$ of the total foot-print was exposed to the ion beam milling, in areas of low electric and high magnetic …
Structural characterization of selective area growth GaN nanowires by non-destructive optical and electrical techniques
2015
The growth selectivity and structural quality of GaN nanowires obtained by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on pre-patterned GaN(0001) templates are investigated by means of non-destructive techniques. Optimum control over the nanowire arrangement and size requires a pitch between the mask apertures below twice the diffusion length of Ga atoms. Lower pitches, however, seem to slightly diminish the structural quality of the material, as revealed by the increase of the Raman peak linewidths. The photoluminescence spectra of the nanowires show a considerable presence of basal plane stacking faults, whose density increases for decreasing nanowire diameter. The capabilities of Kelvin probe…
Integrated Optical Technique for Detection of Electro-Optical Non-Linearities in Thin Films
1976
A simple method for detection of electro-optical non-linearities in thin films is presented. The method involves an easily fabricated structure and a little practice in integrated optical techniques. It is also possible to detect small induced variations of refractive index, using lower voltage with respect to those applied in a conventional Kerr cell. We have sucessfully tested our method using two different polymer materials as thin films. In both of these we have observed an induced ?n ? 3 10?5 with an electric field of 60 V/?, with a response time round about 300 nsec. The experimental values of induced ?n versus electric field fit very well a parabola, proving the quadratic behavior of…
Ketogenic diet and phytoextracts. Comparison of the efficacy of Mediterranean, Zone and Tisanoreica diet on some health risk factors
2010
The purpose of this work was to test the efficacy of three kind of different diet on some health risk factors. The primary objective of the present study was to examine the effects of diets, amount of carbohydrate intake and use of phytoextracts on weight loss, body composition and related risk factors and on metabolic values as Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) and Respiratory Ratio (RR).We tested 44 subjects randomly assigned to one of 3 groups of diet: Mediterranean (MED), Zone (ZON) and Tisanoreica® i.e. ketogenic diet plus phytoextracts (TIS). Anthropometry, blood chemistry and urine analysis were performed. After 40 days TIS led to a significant average weight and fat loss compared to …
