Exploring the contribution of grassroots innovations to justice: using the capability approach to normatively address bottom-up sustainable transitio…
2020
There is growing interest in the potential of grassroots innovations for the transition towards more just and sustainable societies. Nevertheless, there is lack of clear normative discussion regarding these processes. The paper strives to propose and test a framework that enables an analysis of how and in which sense specific grassroots innovation processes may be contributing to the construction of more just societies. To this end, we connect elements of the multi-level perspective on sociotechnical transitions (frequently used in the analysis of grassroots innovations) with elements of the capability approach, which offers a multi-dimensional perspective to justice. The framework is used …
A Top-Down Method for Long-Term Investing
2021
This paper bases long-term investing on a tradeable stochastic discount factor (SDF), relates it to the growth optimal portfolio and argues for a top-down method, where modeling efforts are directed at capturing its long-run dynamics in a generalized setting. This differs from the common, cumbersome bottom-up method of modeling many risky securities in the marketplace. Various optimal portfolio strategies can be implemented efficiently using fractional expectations of the SDF. This paper illustrates empirically for the US stock market that the proposed method leads to higher wealth, higher returns on investment and higher long-term utility levels.
On parsing optimality for dictionary-based text compression—the Zip case
2013
Dictionary-based compression schemes are the most commonly used data compression schemes since they appeared in the foundational paper of Ziv and Lempel in 1977, and generally referred to as LZ77. Their work is the base of Zip, gZip, 7-Zip and many other compression software utilities. Some of these compression schemes use variants of the greedy approach to parse the text into dictionary phrases; others have left the greedy approach to improve the compression ratio. Recently, two bit-optimal parsing algorithms have been presented filling the gap between theory and best practice. We present a survey on the parsing problem for dictionary-based text compression, identifying noticeable results …
Multiple SIP strategies and bottom-up adorning in logic query optimization
1990
Preprocessing methods called “readorning” and “bottom-up adorning” are introduced as means of enlarging the application domain of magic sets and related query optimization strategies for logic databases. Readorning tries to make possible the simultaneous use of multiple sideways information passing (sip) strategies defined for a rule, thus yielding an optimization effect that may not be achieved by any particular choice of sip strategies. Bottom-up adorning is used to make magic sets applicable to cases in which potential optimizations can be derived from bindings coming upwards from rule bodies to rule heads in bottom-up evaluation. These include the cases in which we know that some base r…
Relative role of fish vs. starfish predation in controlling sea urchin populations in Mediterranean rocky shores
2009
In the Mediterranean, fishing bans generally allow the recovery of populations of sea urchin predators, such as the seabreams Diplodus sargus and D. vulgaris, promoting the transformation of overgrazed communities into ones dominated by erect macroalgae. However, in the marine reserve on Ustica Island (SW Italy) the opposite trend has occurred in the upper infralittoral community, and urchin barrens formed after the cessation of fishing activities. We hypothesized that (1) the natural scarcity of the 2 seabream species leads to a low predation rate on sea urchins at Ustica, and (2) predation rate varies with depth, due to differences in the predator assemblages. Tethering experiments were c…
Decentralization in Ukraine and Bottom-Up European Integration
2020
Decentralization is one of the most profound reforms undertaken in Ukraine. It includes the voluntary merging of previously independent villages and towns into larger Amalgamated Territorial Communities (ATCs). The European Union strongly supports the reform but does not make Ukraine’s further European integration conditional upon it. In order to study whether decentralization can, nevertheless, contribute to the country’s European integration, this chapter adopts a sociological perspective. It asks whether decentralization has led to an increase in community twinning and participation of Ukrainian communities in transnational municipal networks. It is based on a survey conducted among the …
Regulating the blink: Cognitive reappraisal modulates attention
2014
Our brain is unable to fully process all the sensory signals we encounter. Attention is the process that helps selecting input from all available information for detailed processing and it is largely influenced by the affective value of the stimuli. This study examined if attentional bias towards emotional stimuli can be modulated by cognitively changing their emotional value. Participants were presented with negative and neutral images from four different scene-categories depicting humans (‘Reading’, ‘Working’, ‘Crying’ and ’Violence’). Using cognitive reappraisal subjects decreased and increased the negativity of one negative (e.g., ‘Crying’) and one neutral (e.g., ‘Reading’) category res…
University-wide, top-down curriculum reform at a Finnish university: perceptions of the academic staff
2021
This study examines academic staff’s perceptions of a university-wide, top-down curriculum reform in terms of the management of the reform, the support provided by the university’s administration, and the utilisation of the university’s guidelines. Differences between faculties are also scrutinised. The study was conducted at a multidisciplinary public research university in Finland using the survey method. The data (n = 394) consisted of academic staff’s responses to multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Correlation coefficients, exploratory factor analyses, and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilised to analyse the quantitative data. Responses to the open-ended questions …
Właściwości negocjacji w Unii Europejskiej: wybrane aspekty teoretyczne
2015
The focus of the paper is the selected, most significant theoretical aspects of negotiations conduct…
The Timecourse of Sentence Processing in the Brain
2015
This chapter discusses the current state of the art with regard to the timecourse of sentence processing in the brain. It outlines the challenges associated with studying timecourse information at the sentence level from a neurobiological perspective and describes competing theoretical and empirical perspectives in this domain. In addition to drawing on findings from neurophysiological methods (electroencephalography [EEG]; magnetoencephalography [MEG]), insights from eye movement measures during natural reading are also taken into account. The chapter concludes that while we are currently unable to make absolute claims about the timecourse of sentence processing from a neurobiological pers…
