Lack of efficacy of resveratrol on C-reactive protein and selected cardiovascular risk factors — Results from a systematic review and meta-analysis o…

2015

Introduction: Numerous studies have suggested that oral supplementation with resveratrol exerts cardioprotective effects, but evidence of the effects on C-reactive protein (CRP) plasma levels and other cardiovascular (CV) risk factors is inconclusive. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of resveratrol supplementation on plasma CRP concentrations and selected predictors of CV risk. Methods:The searchincludedPUBMED,Cochrane Library,Web ofScience,Scopus, andEMBASE(up toAugust31, 2014) to identify RCTs investigating the effects of resveratrol supplementation on selected CV risk factors. Quantitative data synthesis was performed using a random-effects model, with weig…

Preliminary communication: imiquimod in mixed capillary/lymphatic malformation.

2008

:  The present authors reported a 14-year-old white boy who visited the present authors’ dermatology department in January 2004. Physical examination revealed multiple translucent and hemorrhagic vesicles and skin-colored nodules on the chin. The lesion had grown slowly in size over the previous 7 years. The objective of this study is to estimate the exact mechanism of action of topical imiquimod on mixed capillary/lymphatic malformation. After 4 weeks of therapy the lesions were less protuberant. At the follow-up examination after a further 2 months of therapy, there was partial clinical regression of the capillary component with a return to normal skin color. One month after termination o…

Definitions and Clinical Trial Design Principles for Coronary Artery Chronic Total Occlusion Therapies: CTO-ARC Consensus Recommendations.

2021

Over the past 2 decades, chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention has developed into its own subspecialty of interventional cardiology. Dedicated terminology, techniques, devices, courses, and training programs have enabled progressive advancements. However, only a few randomized trials have been performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CTO percutaneous coronary intervention. Moreover, several published observational studies have shown conflicting data. Part of the paucity of clinical data stems from the fact that prior studies have been suboptimally designed and performed. The absence of standardized end points and the discrepancy in definitions also prevent…

Is Overall Mortality the Right Composite Endpoint in Clinical Trials of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome?

2018

Objectives Overall mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome is a composite endpoint because it includes death from multiple causes. In most acute respiratory distress syndrome trials, it is unknown whether reported deaths are due to acute respiratory distress syndrome or the underlying disease, unrelated to the specific intervention tested. We investigated the causes of death after contracting acute respiratory distress syndrome in a large cohort. Design A secondary analysis from three prospective, multicenter, observational studies. Setting A network of multidisciplinary ICUs. Patients We studied 778 patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome…

Parental occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals and male genital malformations: a study in the Danish National Birth Cohort study

2011

Abstract Background Sex hormones closely regulate development of the male genital organs during fetal life. The hypothesis that xenobiotics may disrupt endogenous hormonal signalling has received considerable scientific attention, but human evidence is scarce. Objectives We analyse occurrence of hypospadias and cryptorchidism according to maternal and paternal occupational exposure to possible endocrine disrupting chemicals. Methods We conducted a follow-up study of 45,341 male singleton deliveries in the Danish National Birth Cohort during 1997-2009. Information on work during pregnancy was obtained by telephone interviews around gestational week 16. Parents' job titles were classified acc…

Prospective visual evaluation of apodized diffractive intraocular lenses

2006

To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near visual performance in patients who had multifocal apodized diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. The best corrected distance visual acuity, best distance-corrected near visual acuity, intermediate visual acuity, distance contrast sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions, and patient satisfaction were measured in 325 patients and 335 patients who had bilateral implantation of the model SA60D3 IOL (AcrySof ReSTOR, Alcon) and model SN60D3 IOL (AcrySof Natural ReSTOR), respectively. At the 6-month postoperative visit, binocular best corrected distance acuity with the ReSTOR IO…

Prospective study of the Acri.LISA bifocal intraocular lens

2007

To assess the visual results after bilateral implantation of the bifocal Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL) (Acri.Tec AG).Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain.Eighty-one patients had bilateral implantation of the distance-dominant bifocal Acri.LISA 366D IOL in a prospective study. Monocular and binocular best corrected distance visual acuity and best distance-corrected near visual acuity, binocular best distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity, and distance contrast sensitivity under photopic (85 cd/m(2)) and mesopic (5 cd/m(2)) conditions were determined. At the 3-month postoperative visit, the mean binocular best corrected distance acuity was 0.048 +/- 0.111 log…

Physicians' guideline adherence is associated with long-term heart failure mortality in outpatients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction…

2019

Background Physicians’ adherence to guideline-recommended therapy is associated with short-term clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, its impact on longer-term outcomes is poorly documented. In this analysis we assessed the longer-term association of physicians’ adherence with clinical outcomes, including mortality and unplanned hospitalisations, at 18-month follow-up of the QUALIFY registry (Clinical trial registration ISRCTN87465420) Method and results Data at 18 months were available for 6118 ambulatory HFrEF patients from this international prospective observational survey. Adherence was measured as a continuous variable, ranging from 0…

Treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy with ciclosporin A: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre trial.

2010

Summary Background Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare X-linked progressive disease characterised by loss of ambulation at about age 10 years, with death in early adulthood due to respiratory and cardiac insufficiency. Steroids are effective at slowing the progression of muscle weakness; however, their use is limited by side-effects, prompting the search for alternatives. We assessed the effect of ciclosporin A as monotherapy and in combination with intermittent prednisone for the treatment of ambulant patients with this disorder. Methods Our study was a parallel-group, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicentre trial at trial sites of the German muscular dystrophy network, MD-NET, ove…
