Laryngeal involvement in relapsing polychondritis: Case report and review of literature

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystem autoimmune disease of unknown origin characterised by recurrent episodes of inflammation and progressive destruction of the cartilaginous structures and connective tissue of the whole body. The diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis is difficult. We present a review of the literature and describe a case of 49-year old woman. Her symptoms began in June 2004 with sore throat, dysphonia, pain in the thoracic wall and some joints, a slightly raised temperature and cough. The value of morphological investigations of airway mucosa should be compared to a functional method when estimating the toxicity of airborne pollutants. In 34 guinea pig tracheas, mucociliary activity was measured using a modified light beam reflex method before and following exposure to sulfur dioxide for 30 minutes in concentrations ranging between 7.5 and 37.5 mg/m3. Exposure to air served as a control. Simultaneously, specimens were taken for light and electron microscopy. Mucociliary activity decreased from 8.4 +/- 2.9 Hz (control exposure) to 4.0 +/- 2.9 Hz following exposure to 7.5 mg/m3, to 3.4 +/- 2.7 Hz at 15 mg/m3 sulfur dioxide, to 1.8 +/- 2.2 Hz at 22.5 mg/m3 sulfur dioxide, t…

Introduction: Endotracheal intubation in the rat is difficult because of extremely small size of anatomical structures (oral cavity, epiglottis and vocal cords), small inlet for an endotracheal tube and the lack of proper techniacal instruments. A device is described which permits to obtain a signal at the beginning of in- or expiration respectively. This signal may be used to trigger an electrical stimulator. To permit studies at different states of lung inflation the tracheal cannula is connected to a spirometer circuit. To produce constant positive or negative air pressure this bellows-type spirometer is loaded with exchangeable metal weights. The tracheal pressure is recorded by means of a pressure transducer, the output of which is taken as signal. The device allows accurate compensation of the DC-component of the transducer output resulting from spirometer operation at a maintained positive or negative pressure.
