Monte carlo studies of phase transitions in polymer blends and block copolymer melts
1994
The unmixing transition of both symmetrical polymer blends AB (i.e. chain lengthsNA=NB=N) and asymmetrical ones (NB/NA=2,3) is studied by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model. Combination of semi-grand-canonical simulation techniques, «histogram reweighting» and finitesize scaling allows an accurate location of the coexistence curve in the critical region. The variation of the critical temperature with chain length (N) is studied and compared to theoretical predictions. For the symmetrical case, use of chain lengths up toN=512 allows a rough estimation of crossover scaling functions for the crossover from Ising to mean-field exponents. The order-disorder transit…

Essential versus accessory aspects of cell death: recommendations of the NCCD 2015
2015
Cells exposed to extreme physicochemical or mechanical stimuli die in an uncontrollable manner, as a result of their immediate structural breakdown. Such an unavoidable variant of cellular demise is generally referred to as ?accidental cell death' (ACD). In most settings, however, cell death is initiated by a genetically encoded apparatus, correlating with the fact that its course can be altered by pharmacologic or genetic interventions. "Regulated cell death" (RCD) can occur as part of physiologic programs or can be activated once adaptive responses to perturbations of the extracellular or intracellular microenvironment fail. The biochemical phenomena that accompany RCD may be harnessed to…
Influence of chitin nanocrystals on the dielectric behaviour and conductivity of chitosan-based bionanocomposites
2018
[EN] A series of bionanocomposite films based on chitosan, reinforced with chitin nanocrystals, were developed, and assessed in terms of dielectric behaviour and conductivity by using an experimental methodology that allows avoiding the conductivity contribution and the exclusion of contact and interfacial polarization effects. The dielectric relaxations at low and high frequency and temperatures were modeled by Havriliak-Negami functions. Below the glass transition temperature (Tg), the gamma and beta relaxations were observed, which were related to intramolecular and non-cooperative segmental movements. At higher temperatures, an intermolecular and cooperative macromolecular movement, rel…
4,4′-Substituted biphenyl coronands. Preparation of a new selective fluorescent sensor for mercury salts
2006
Six new 4,4′-substituted biphenyl coronands have been prepared. The ligands containing dimethylamino groups in the biphenyl moiety have been used in transition metal cations’ complexation and one of them (3) has demonstrated to be a selective fluorescent sensor for mercury. Stoichiometries of the formed complexes and complexation constants have been determined by titration experiments. In addition, the extractant ability of some ligands has also been studied. Finally, the electrochemical properties of some of these ligands are also described.
Synthesis, solution and electrochemical behaviour of new aza-crown ethers derived from biphenyl
2000
Macrocyclic ligands L1–L4 containing biphenyl units have been synthesized. Potentiometric and voltametric studies in the presence and the absence of transition metal cations have been carried out. The relationship between the conformation of the ligand and oxidation states has been also considered. The crystal structure of [HgL2(CN)2]·2Hg(CN)2 has been elucidated by X-ray diffraction techniques.
EFFECT OF DRAWING ON THE STRUCTURE AND THE DYNAMIC-MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF SALTED POLYCAPROAMIDE.
1982
Abstract Structural determinations, obtained through density, birefringence, and WAXS measurements, are reported for nylon 6/inorganic salt fiber samples as a function of draw ratio. They confirm the possibility of achieving very high amorphous orientation in these systems. Dynamic-mechanical data have also been collected which allow determination of glass transition temperatures. These are also discussed in terms of structural parameters.

Semi-IPN's of different composition, based on linear poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PVME) and crosslinked polystyrene are studied using stress and birefringence measurements in simple elongation. From quasistatic stress-strain experiments at constant T(experiment)-Tg, it can be deduced that the stress results only from the deformation of the polystyrene network, while the PVME chains do not contribute to the macroscopic stress. The concentration dependence of the network modulus is adequately described by the rubber elastic theories
The [Fe(etz)6](BF4)2 Spin-Crossover System - Part Two: Hysteresis in the LIESST Regime
1996
In the [Fe(etz)6](BF4)2 spincrossover system the iron(II) complexes occupy two nonequivalent lattice sites, sites A and B. Complexes on site A show a thermal high-spin (HS) low-spin (LS) transition at 105 K, whereas complexes on site B remain in the HS state down to 10 K. Complexes on both sites exhibit light-induced spin state conversions (LIESST) at 20 K: LS HS on site A with = 514.5 nm, and HS LS on site B with = 820 nm. The relaxation processes subsequent to the HS LS conversion on site B reveal a light-induced HSLS bistability for the complexes on site B at 70 K. The bistability as well as the absence of a thermal spin transition on site B are attributed to a thermal hysteresis for the…
Dipole moments of 4′-aminoflavonols determined using electro-optical absorption measurements or molecular Stark-effect spectroscopy
2002
The electro-optical absorption measurements (EOAM) were used to measure the dipole moments of the normal form of 4 -(methoxy)-3hydroxyflavone (FOM), 4 -(dimethylamino)-3-hydroxyflavone (FME), and 4 -N-(15-azacrown-5)-3-hydroxyflavone (FCR). For these probes the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) takes place. For comparison, the dipole moments of 4 -(dimethylamino)-3methoxyflavone (FME3ME), for which ESIPT is lacking, were measured. In the case of FCR, FME, and FME3ME the equilibrated ground (µg) and excited Franck–Condon state (µ FC ) electrical dipole moments are parallel to each other and also parallel to the transition dipole moment. The electrical dipole moment…
