The history of translation and of the theory of translation in the context of translation studies
2013
In the present contribution to the History of Translation we consider critically the emergence and integration of Translation Studies as an academic discipline and the role of both Translation History and Translation Historiography. An analysis of what this discipline was before its acceptance into academia and proposals for what its role should be within a humanistic oriented curriculum for future professionals derives from the reception, clearly unsatisfactory, of its status as academic knowledge. Given the specificity of the Latin American situation (in no other region of the world translation has played a greater identitary role), we have added an appendix on the History of Translation …
Les traductions latines de textes hagiographiques byzantins de la période médio-byzantine
2019
The present article attempts to record and present as much as possible the Latin translations of hagiographical texts during the Middle Byzantine period. The texts are first approached from a literary point of view, then a historical presentation is attempted, referring to their possible functional use in the traditions of the two churches, Constantinople and Rome.
Multitranslation within the Catalan and Valencian standards: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as a case in point
2010
First of all, a definition of multitranslation is given and a selective classification of the main multitranslated products in Catalan is offered. After that, multitranslation is contextualised within the sociology of translation. Then the polysystem of Catalan translation is analysed together with the linguistic, the politicoeconomical and the communicative‐cultural cosystems which influence multitranslation. Next, I present the multitranslation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone into Valencian and a comparative analysis of both the Catalan and the Valencian versions. Then, I review the reception of the Valencian version in the academic and literary spheres. Finally, the relations…
Terminología y traducción económica francés-español: evaluación de recursos terminológicos en el ámbito contable
2014
The aim of this paper is to evaluate a series of terminology resources and determine their suitability to the practice of French-Spanish translation of accounting documents. First we identify the terminology needs of a specific group of translator trainees when facing business translation, as well as the resources they use particularly when translating annual accounts. Then, we select various terminology resources used in this context and evaluate them according to their needs. The results suggest the development of a French-Spanish dictionary of accounting terms adapted to the terminology needs of the practice of translation in this area.
A deficiency of documentation in translation historiography in Spain: reflections about performed but unpublished (Austrian) theatre
2013
The aim of this paper is to underline the importance of recovering translated but not published literature in Spain so as to contribute exhaustively to translation history. We refer specifically to the translation recovery of those theatre plays that arrive in Spain temporarily through various performances, thus becoming the only means of reception. This paper classifies this kind of translation and weighs up the alterations that are made to it during the staging. This article is the English version of “Un déficit documental en la historiografía de la traducción en España: consideraciones acerca del teatro (austriaco) representado y no editado” by Elena Serrano Bertos. It was not published …
(Eco)linguistic planning and language-exchange management
2010
This article is the English version of "Planificació (eco)lingüística i gestió dels intercanvis lingüístics" by Oscar Diaz Fouces. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. The author presents a range of policies aimed at maintaining the integrity of the ecolinguistic spaces related to translation, language teaching, to the exchange of cultural products and, in general, to the management of linguistic interchanges.
Translation and lexicography: a necessary dialogue
2014
Galician women translators in the 20th century: rewriting the history of translation from a gender and national approach
2011
This article is the English version of “Traductoras gallegas del siglo XX: Reescribiendo la historia de la traducción desde el género y la nación” by Olga Castro. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. Within the newly established field of Galician Studies, Feminist Theory has played a major role in revealing how women have contributed to the development of the Galician cultural polysystem. However, it is my contention that the translative facet of many women translators has not yet received enough critical attention. Therefore, within the f…
