Wyrazy dźwiękonaśladowcze w polskim i czeskim przekładzie "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" J. K. Rowling

2019

The article is a contrastive analysis of twenty two Czech and Polish onomatopoeic verbs from translations of J. K. Rowling’s book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The main source of data was Ćesky narodnf korpus - Korpus InterCorp v. 9. The starting point was locating the presence of examples of onomatopoeia separately in each translation and then verifying if their presence is motivated by onomatopoeia in the original text or not - usually it was. The next step was to establish what kinds of relations are present between the equivalent and the translated onomatopoeia. In the article, three types of these relations are presented: 1) the exact equivalent refers in the whole text al…

Tadeusz Różewicz po niemiecku. Świadectwa lektury

2019

The title of the study covers both instances of Tadeusz Różewicz’s literary output, which are present within the circle of the German language (the art of translation) and the forms of the presences of the German literature and culture in the author’s own texts, metatexts, self-commentaries. Still, the poet’s dialogical word, as contextual and inter-textual networking (“knots in the net”) which creates an open space for the literary-cultural discourses (the following are present here, among others: Goethe, Holderlin, Celan, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Heidegger), becomes a superior value that permeates the character of the “textual world” active here. At the same time, a look at translation as…

La circulación de las ideas positivistas en Argentina y en México: editores y traductores (1850-1950)

2013

Historians have demonstrated that Auguste Comte‟s philosophy became an eclectic positivism after its introduction to Latin America. The factors that help explain this eclecticism include positivism's connections with the writings of Herbert Spencer, Charles Darwin, and John Stuart Mill; the simultaneous circulation of print materials in their original language as well as their translations; and the emergence of an international publishing market in the late 19th century. This paper studies the flow of positivist ideas in Mexico and Argentina from the perspective of publishers and translators during a period when states were organizing their fundamental structures and education policies (185…

Wor(l)ds in Progress: A Study of Contemporary Migrant Writings

2010

In the contemporary world, the figure of the migrant, moving across spaces, cultures and languages, has acquired unprecedented centrality. Migrants have transformed the ways of representing, and narrating, the transnational world in which they live, responding in new fashions to one of the oldest impulses of men and women of every place and time: the impulse to tell stories. By engaging with notions of diaspora, postcoloniality, nomadism, translation, exile and migration, the study moves across the Anglophone and Italophone spectra offering a compelling definition of migrant literature at the turn of the millennium. Chapters on Cristina Garcia, Nuruddin Farah, Caryl Phillips and Ubax Cristi…

What is new in new materialism for a newcomer?

2018

AbstractHaving recently emerged as an intellectual project, new materialism (NM) is extending to different fields, including sport, exercise and health studies. However, it is still unclear why and how NM is new, which can jeopardise its potential impact in academia and society. The aim of this paper is to discuss the newness of NM and to explore how it plays out in relation to different issues, such as knowledge translation and partisan positions. At the same time, NM is used as a way of understanding my own positionality as a newcomer who is becoming an academic within a field having manifold intellectual debates while being shaped by a neoliberal rationality. Reasons as to why NM has to …

Process specification and verification

1996

Graph grammars provide a very convenient specification tool for distributed systems of processes. This paper addresses the problem how properties of such specifications can be proven. It shows a connection between algebraic graph rewrite rules and temporal (trace) logic via the graph expressions of [2]. Statements concerning the global behavior can be checked by local reasoning.

Psychometric properties of the parental bonding instrument in a Spanish sample.

1993

The Parental Bonding Instrument was translated into Spanish and administered to a sample of 205 Spanish primiparae 3 days after childbirth. Reliability, factorial structure and predictive validity for affective disorders were evaluated. The Spanish version of the PBI has psychometric features similar to those described in other cultures. However, the results suggest that in future research the predictive power of the “Control” factor in affective disorders might be improved by splitting it into two subfactors: “Overprotection” and “Restraint”.

Quantifying English and Polish Lolitas: A Corpus-Driven Stylistic Comparison

2013

The study presented in this article, which is a fragment of a larger study of translational and non- translational texts (Grabowski 2012), falls within the scope of descriptive translation studies (DTS) and corpus linguistics, with particular emphasis on the study of translation universals, on the example of English-original (written in 1955) and two independent Polish translations of the novel Lolita by V. Nabokov (by Stiller in 1991 and Klobukowski in 1997). According to Baker (1995: 243), universal features of translation or translation universals, constitute specific textual characteristics (e.g. lexical, grammatical or stylistic) typical of translated texts, irrespective of languages i…

Sequence evolution, processing, and posttranslational modification of zonadhesin D domains in primates, as inferred from cDNA data

2005

Zonadhesin is a mammalian transmembrane sperm ligand. Precursor zonadhesin essentially consists of MAM (meprin/A5 antigen/mu receptor tyrosine phosphatase) domains, a mucin-like repeat, and D domains (homologous to von Willebrand D). Recent immunovisualization and binding assays indicate that zonadhesin D domains 1–3 bind postacrosomally to the zona pellucida. This feature has attracted considerable interest in the evolution of zonadhesin and its possible biological and biomedical implications. Previous molecular evolutionary analyses, however, were confined to cDNA sequences of only few distantly related species. Moreover, except for rabbit and pig, little is known about zonadhesin’s proce…
