Bi-Level ventilation decreases pulmonary shunt and modulates neuroinflammation in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation model
2020
Background Optimal ventilation strategies during cardiopulmonary resuscitation are still heavily debated and poorly understood. So far, no convincing evidence could be presented in favour of outcome relevance and necessity of specific ventilation patterns. In recent years, alternative models to the guideline-based intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) have been proposed. In this randomized controlled trial, we evaluated a bi-level ventilation approach in a porcine model to assess possible physiological advantages for the pulmonary system as well as resulting changes in neuroinflammation compared to standard measures. Methods Sixteen male German landrace pigs were anesthetized a…
Including revision as a competence of undergraduate students in translation.
2022
Proteostasis Deregulation in Neurodegeneration and Its Link with Stress Granules: Focus on the Scaffold and Ribosomal Protein RACK1.
2022
The role of protein misfolding, deposition, and clearance has been the dominant topic in the last decades of investigation in the field of neurodegeneration. The impairment of protein synthesis, along with RNA metabolism and RNA granules, however, are significantly emerging as novel potential targets for the comprehension of the molecular events leading to neuronal deficits. Indeed, defects in ribosome activity, ribosome stalling, and PQC—all ribosome-related processes required for proteostasis regulation—can contribute to triggering stress conditions and promoting the formation of stress granules (SGs) that could evolve in the formation of pathological granules, usually occurring during ne…
Molecular cloning of the RPS0 gene from Candida tropicalis.
2001
The Saccharomyces cerevisiae RPS0 A and B genes encode proteins essential for maturation of the 40S ribosomal subunit precursors. We have isolated a homologue of the RPS0 gene from Candida tropicalis, which we named CtRPS0. The C. tropicalisRPS0 encodes a protein of 261 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 28.65 kDa and an isoelectric point of 4.79. CtRps0p displays significant amino acid sequence homology with Rps0p from C. albicans, S. cerevisiae, Neurospora crassa, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Pneumocystis carinii and higher organisms, such as human, mouse and rat. CtRPS0 on a high copy number vector can complement the lethal phenotype linked to the disruption of both R…
Richard Francis Burton. Victorian Explorer and Translator
2012
This volume offers a critical insight into the life and work of the controversial Victorian explorer and translator Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). Analysis focuses on his travel accounts and erotic translations, which both re-elaborated and challenged dominant Victorian discourses on race, gender and sexuality, generating controversies in the fields of anthropology, sexology and medicine. The premise of the study is that Burton entertained an ambiguous relationship with the colonial institutions: on the one hand, he pursued the colonial project, while on the other, he was an irreverent outsider who clashed with the imperial authorities. As this investigation reveals, he defied British …

Semi-automatic Quasi-morphological Word Segmentation for Neural Machine Translation
2018
This paper proposes the Prefix-Root-Postfix-Encoding (PRPE) algorithm, which performs close-to-morphological segmentation of words as part of text pre-processing in machine translation. PRPE is a cross-language algorithm requiring only minor tweaking to adapt it for any particular language, a property which makes it potentially useful for morphologically rich languages with no morphological analysers available. As a key part of the proposed algorithm we introduce the ‘Root alignment’ principle to extract potential sub-words from a corpus, as well as a special technique for constructing words from potential sub-words. We conducted experiments with two different neural machine translation sys…
On the moving load problem in beam structures equipped with tuned mass dampers
2017
This paper proposes an original and efficient approach to the moving load problem on Euler–Bernoulli beams, with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic translational supports and rotational joints, and in addition, equipped with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic tuned mass dampers (TMDs). While supports are taken as representative of external devices such as grounded dampers or in-span supports with flexibility and damping, the rotational joints may model rotational dampers or connections with flexibility and damping arising from imperfections or damage. The theory of generalised functions is used to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, which involves deriving exact complex eigenvalues and eigen…
Inconvénients de la pluralité a travers l'histoire et la traduction en polonais des noms propres dans Les Rougon-Macquart d'Émile Zola
2015
Emile Zola’s Rougon-Macąuart novel series was translated into Polish from 1953 to 1960 - in the period following Stalin's death, known in Europę as "detente". In the Polish versions of the novels, some traces of the era of their creation can be seen, especially in the choice of the vocabulary and structures. As they were created by sixteen translators, a number of non-consequences and inaccuracies, result of this plurality, can be observed within the cycle. Those deficiencies particularly concern the way of translating proper nouns and are capable of misleading an attentive reader or even discourage him to read Zola's works.
