Facial disability index (FDI): adaptation to Spanish, reliability and validity.
2011
Objectives: To adapt to Spanish the facial disability index (FDI) described by VanSwearingen and Brach in 1995 and to assess its reliability and validity in patients with facial nerve paresis after parotidectomy. Study Design: The present study was conducted in two different stages: a) cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire and b) cross-sectional study of a control group of 79 Spanish-speaking patients who suffered facial paresis after superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. The cross-cultural adaptation process comprised the following stages: (I) initial translation, (II) synthesis of the translated document, (III) retro-translation, (IV) review by a board of expe…
La obra de Galdós en las traducciones italianas
2020
From the translation of Marianela (1880), the Italian reception of the works of Benito Pérez Galdós through translations does not present a very satisfactory situation, but rather uneven, especially if we take into account the production of contemporary translations to the Canarian writer or in the decades immediately after his disappearance, with some emblematic cases of manipulation with a very partial and censored translation such as that of Fortunata e Giacinta (1926), framed in the Fascist Ventennio, although it was the first translation into a foreign language of the Galdosian masterpiece. This study aims to recover and organize the panorama of translations into Italian of Galdós's na…
Specialized Translators at work during the Risorgimento: the Biblioteca dell'Economista and its English-Italian Translations
2014
The paper deals with the Biblioteca dell’Economista (BE) as an early corpus of specialized translation. It considers the different text-types included in this series, and the influence of English on the early evolution of the Italian language of economics. The paper focuses on the assumptions which led to the creation of the BE and the role it played in the spread of English economic texts in Italy under the leadership of the well-known Sicilian economist Francesco Ferrara (1851-1868). An overview of the translation work shows how this important venture could be exploited for linguistic, translational and contrastive research. The analysis of some extracts from the translation of Ricardo’s …
Uczenie poezji amerykańskiej i niemieckiej przez przekład na przykładzie wybranych utworów literackich
2019
Not only is translation of poetry an effective method of teaching poerty in a proper historical context, but also it enhances students acquisition of knowledge about realities of life in foreign countries and different cultures, not to mention the fact that it improves their linguistic competences in both the source and the target languages. What is important, translation is a holistic method, forcing students to think independently.

Lev Tolstoy's Appreciation of Charles Dickens?
2022
In Lev Tolstoy’s letters, memoirs and even literary works, mentions of Charles Dickens, his works and his influence on the Russian writer are found often enough to deserve a closer look. Of the Victorian writers Tolstoy read, Dickens was the most eminent, and his appreciation of the English author was permanent and unchangeable. Even in the period of his spiritual crisis, when he rejected most of his own works, some inspired by Dickens, he did not change his positive attitude towards his favourite English writer. Tolstoy read many of Dickens’s works, both in English and in Russian. He even managed to publish in his publishing house “Intermediary” Dickens’s Little Dorrit, Great Expectations,…

Semantics bias in cross-national comparative analyses : Is it good or bad to have "fair" health?
2016
The Health Behavior in School-aged Children is a cross-national study collecting data on social and health indicators on adolescents in 43 countries. The study provides comparable data on health behaviors and health outcomes through the use of a common protocol, which have been a back bone of the study sine its initiation in 1983. Recent years, researchers within the study have noticed a questionable comparability on the widely used item on self-rated health. One of the four response categories to the item “Would you say your health is….?” showed particular variation, as the response category “Fair” varied from 20 % in Latvia and Moldova to 3–4 % in Bulgaria and Macedonia. A qualitative min…
Commenting on Historical Writings in Medieval Latin Europe : A Reconnaissance
2015
Modern scholarship seems to undervalue medieval commentaries on historical writings. This article intends to bring this phenomenon to scholars’ attention by providing a preliminary overview of the forms and subjects of such commentaries. It examines various types of evidence including not only a few commentaries proper (Nicolas Trevet’s on Livy and John of Dąbrówka’s on Vincent of Cracow), but also different apparatus consisting of more or less systematic interlinear and marginal glosses and commentary-like additions to vernacular translations, mostly of Italian and French origin. It begins by considering various consultation-related signs and annotations, such as cross-references. Then, it…
