Alhydrogel® adjuvant, ultrasonic dispersion and protein binding: A TEM and analytical study

Aluminium-based vaccine adjuvants have been in use since the 1920s. Aluminium hydroxide (alum) that is the chemical basis of Alhydrogel, a widely used adjuvant, is a colloid that binds proteins to the particular surface for efficient presentation to the immune system during the vaccination process. Using conventional TEM and cryo-TEM we have shown that Alhydrogel can be finely dispersed by ultrasonication of the aqueous suspension. Clusters of ultrasonicated aluminium hydroxide micro-fibre crystals have been produced (∼ 10-100 nm), that are significantly smaller than those present the untreated Alhydrogel (∼ 2-12 μm). Routing Algorithm for Maximizing Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Network for Broadcast Transmission

In the article we discuss solutions of the maximum lifetime broadcasting problem in wireless sensor networks. Due to limited energy resources of the network nodes to find an optimal transmission route of the broadcasted data we minimize the maximum energy consumed by the nodes. We give an analytical solution of the problem in one dimensional regular sensor network for the point-to-point and point-to-multipoint data transmission scheme. We show that in such a network, when the cost of data transmission is a polynomial function of distance between transmitter and receiver, there exist solutions with an equal energy, i.e., all nodes of the network consume the same amount of energy. A measurement-based channel model for vehicular communications in tunnels

Evagination of Cells Controls Bio-Silica Formation and Maturation during Spicule Formation in Sponges

The enzymatic-silicatein mediated formation of the skeletal elements, the spicules of siliceous sponges starts intracellularly and is completed extracellularly. With Suberites domuncula we show that the axial growth of the spicules proceeds in three phases: (I) formation of an axial canal; (II) evagination of a cell process into the axial canal, and (III) assembly of the axial filament composed of silicatein. During these phases the core part of the spicule is synthesized. Novel photoreception system in sponges?

Abstract Sponges (phylum Porifera) of the classes Hexactinellida and Demospongiae possess a skeleton composed of siliceous spicules, which are synthesized enzymatically. The longest spicules are found among the Hexactinellida, with the stalk spicules (length: 30 cm; diameter: 300 μm) of Hyalonema sieboldi as prominent examples. These spicules are constructed around a central axial filament, which is formed by approximately 40 siliceous layers. The stratified spicules function as optical glass fibers with unique properties. Crystalline nanorods as possible templates for the synthesis of amorphous biosilica during spicule formation in Demospongiae.

In tandem: High-resolution TEM shows that during the initial stages of demosponge spicule formation, a primordial crystalline structure is formed within the axial filament. The recently developed electron diffraction tomography technique (ADT) reveals that the nanorods have a layered structure that matches smectitic phyllosilicates. Signal detection for spread spectrum communication systems with gradient algorithm

Retrieval process of original symbols of a spread spectrum based communication system is tried to be improved by Gradient Algorithm (GA) and Blind Source Separation (BSS) principles.
