The application of the photoacoustic transmittance oscillations for determining elastic constants in gallium and indium selenides
1996
Transmittance periodic oscillations are observed in GaSe and InSe on excitation with optical pulses. Such oscillations are explained in terms of photoacoustic generation of dilatational waves, which become resonant within the crystal. Spectral analysis of those oscillations in samples of different thickness has led to an accurate determination of the longitudinal acoustic‐wave velocity along the crystallographic axis c. Optical properties of ultrathin Al2O3/ZnO nanolaminates
2015
Abstract Because of their high resistance against ultraviolet and high energy particles, ultrathin amorphous nanolaminates can be very attractive for aerospace application. Here we report on the optical and structural properties of ultrathin Al2O3/ZnO nanolaminates deposited by Atomic Layer Deposition. Structural properties of nanolaminates were studied by GIXRD and AFM. Optical characterization was performed by transmittance, spectroscopic ellipsometry and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Regression analysis of ellipsometric spectra has shown that absorption peak decreases and blue shifted with the decrease of bilayer thickness in the stack. On the basis of the analysis of structural a…
Tailoring the transmittance of integrated optical waveguides with short metallic nanoparticle chains
2004
We study the ability of noble metal nanoparticle chains supporting localized surface plasmons to tailor the transmittance of channel waveguides on which they are deposited. The optical interaction between a microwaveguide ~MWG! and various arrangements of nanoparticles is first analyzed by means numerical calculations based on the Green’s tensor formalism. For specific geometries of the particle chains, the transmission spectra of the composite device ~MWG and nanoparticles! exhibits strong modulations in the optical range with the appearance of a neat band gap. The results of an experiment inspired by this theoretical study are also discussed. The photon scanning tunneling microscope image…
Impact of the scattering coefficient of scintillation crystals (LYSO and LSO) on depth of interaction resolution
2008
Intrinsic parameters in scintillation crystals play a crucial role in the measured spatial and energy resolutions. In many cases the measurement of these intrinsic parameters is difficult to be carried out or even there are parameters that need a specific setup to be measured directly, e.g. the intrinsic light yield and the absorption and scattering coefficients. These uncertainties in the parametrization of the characteristics of the scintillation crystals make it quite difficult to evaluate the quality and characteristics of the scintillation crystals and their impact on the resolutions. Results of measurements of depth of interaction and its resolutions for three different scintillation …
Zone plates with cells apodized by Legendre profiles
1990
By apodizing the cells of a zone plate and changing the opening ratio, it is possible to shape the relative power spectrum of its foci. We describe a novel procedure that leads to an analytical formula for shaping the focus power spectrum by using apodizers expressible as the Legendre series; these act on cells of arbitrary opening ratio. Our general result is used to design zone plates that have missing foci and to discuss a synthesis procedure using apodizers with various opening ratios. Our applications can also be used for shaping the power spectrum of 1-D gratings.
Axial behavior of diffractive lenses under Gaussian illumination: complex-argument spectral analysis
1999
We present a general procedure to analyze the axial-irradiance distribution generated by an unlimited diffractive lens under coherent, Gaussian illumination. The resulting on-axis diffraction pattern, which is evaluated in terms of the power complex spectrum of the Fresnel-zone transmittance, explicitly depends on the truncation parameter that we define, which evaluates the effective number of zones illuminated by the Gaussian beam. Depending on the value of this parameter, different kinds of axial behavior are observed. In particular, for moderate values a multiple-focal-shift phenomenon appears, and a simple formula for its evaluation is presented. Additionally, for low values of the trun…
Asymmetric apodization in confocal scanning systems.
2008
A new class of superresolution pairs of pupil filters for three-dimensional, two-pupil confocal imaging is proposed. A distinctive feature of these filters is the asymmetry of their impulse response. For synthesizing the amplitude transmittance of such filters the Fourier transform properties of Hermitian functions are employed. It is shown that, with simple phase-only filters that belong to the class in question, either axial or unidirectional lateral superresolution is achieved.
GAP solitons in 1D asymmetric physical systems
2008
We present a general approach for studying the nonlinear transmittance and gap solitons characteristics of asymmetric and one dimensional (1 D) systems in the low amplitude or Nonlinear Schrodinger limit. Included in this approach are some novel results on naturally asymmetric systems and systems where the symmetry is broken by an external constant force.
Observation of scattering and absorption centers in lead fluoride crystals
2006
For the first time, lead fluoride is used as a fast and compact material in electromagnetic calorimetry. Excellent optical and mechanical properties of the pure Cherenkov crystals are necessary for the A4 collaboration to perform a measurement of the nucleon's strange form factors. Visible scattering and absorption centers as well as surface damages have been investigated to characterize the quality of more than one thousand crystals. Besides, transmittance measurements have been performed on all crystals to reveal absorption bands produced by intrinsic or impurity related point-structure defects. As a consequence, 89 crystals had to be replaced by the Chinese manufacturer SICCAS.

2011
The spectral response of optical transmittance, spectrometry characteristics, output signal shapes and leakage currents of CdZnTe detectors with plane parallel electrodes under illumination with light within wavelength region of 400 – 1100 nm are presented.
