A Risk-Based Approach for Mitigating Ethical Lapses
2019
In early 2008, the CEO of Volkswagen announced a 10-year plan that called for tripling the company’s U.S. sales by 2018. The executive gave marching orders to engineers to come up with a new technology that would enable VW to lower emissions of the new cars. The engineers failed to come up with a device that could do the job. Instead they deployed a defeating software would defeat the testing process. The 2009 VW Jetta clean diesel was launched in April 2008 and followed by the introduction of similarly equipped VW Golfs and Audi A3s. Over 145,000 vehicles were sold in the U.S. in three years. The scheme was eventually exposed, costing the company millions of dollars. This paper describes t…
Indagini sulle infestazioni di Aphis gossypii Glover su melone invernale (Cucumis melo Var. Helios) in aziende a conduzione biologica della Sicilia o…
2011
Investigations on the aphid infestation occurring on winter melon crops (Cucumis melo var. Helios) in organic farms of western Sicily The winter melon (Cucumis melo L.) is an important crop in Sicily. Previous studies carried out in western Sicily have shown that the aphid species Aphis gossipii is the key pest of winter melon crops.A. gossypii is a cosmopolitan species with very polyphagous habits; this phytophagous insect is capable of serious economic damage due to direct feeding of the sap plant and due to the honeydew secretion and the consequent presence of sooty mold and due to the possible transmission of viruses. The aim of this work was to investigate the levels of aphid infestati…
Monitoring of 24-Hours Activity in a Population of Wild Boar (Sus scrofa)
2017
The aim of the study was to determine 24-hour activity of the Wild Boar at the baiting sit established in a forest ecosystem next to large scale plantations, moistly of maize. The study was based on 24-hours monitoring by camera traps. This pilot study was conducted during a year (from May 2015 to June 2016) in western Poland. Recording the exact time and date of each observation made it possible to determine the 24-hour rhythm of the studied species. Moreover, we obtained information on the seasonal change of the structure and size of the packs, and on the frequency of their occurrence at the baiting site. Changes in the size of packs over the year matched directly the animals’ breeding cy…
Monitoring wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations
2017
Z kolei zarejestrow…
Deep traps in InGaN/GaN single quantum well structures grown with and without InGaN underlayers
2020
The electrical properties and deep trap spectra were compared for near-UV GaN/InGaN quantum well (QW) structures grown on free-standing GaN substrates. The structures differed by the presence or absence of a thin (110 nm) InGaN layer inserted between the high temperature GaN buffer and the QW region. Capacitance-voltage profiling with monochromatic illumination showed that in the InGaN underlayer (UL), the density of deep traps with optical threshold near 1.5 eV was much higher than in the QW and higher than for structures without InGaN. Irradiation with 5 MeV electrons strongly increased the concentration of these 1.5 eV traps in the QWs, with the increase more pronounced for samples witho…
Effects of InAlN underlayer on deep traps detected in near-UV InGaN/GaN single quantum well light-emitting diodes
2019
Two types of near-UV light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an InGaN/GaN single quantum well (QW) differing only in the presence or absence of an underlayer (UL) consisting of an InAlN/GaN superlattice (SL) were examined. The InAlN-based ULs were previously shown to dramatically improve internal quantum efficiency of near-UV LEDs, via a decrease in the density of deep traps responsible for nonradiative recombination in the QW region. The main differences between samples with and without UL were (a) a higher compensation of Mg acceptors in the p-GaN:Mg contact layer of the sample without UL, which correlates with the presence of traps with an activation energy of 0.06 eV in the QW region, (b) the…
Distribution and generation of traps in SiO2/Al2O3 gate stacks
2007
In this work we combine charge-pumping measurements with positive constant voltage stress to investigate trap generation in SiO2/ Al2O3 n-MOSFET. Trap density has been scanned either in energy or in position based on charge-pumping (CP) measurements performed under different operating conditions in terms of amplitude and frequency of the gate pulse. Our results have revealed that the traps are meanly localized shallow in energy level, deeper in spatial position and they are mostly generated near the Si/SiO2 interface. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Butstrapa metodes dispersijas novērtēšanai izlašu apsekojumos
2016
Darbā apskatītas vairākas butstrapa metodes, kuras tiek izmantotas izlašu apsekojumos vidējās vērtības un dispersijas novērtēšanā. Autore padziļinātāk izpētījusi butstrapa metodes ar elementu atkārtojumiem: klasisko butstrapa metodi, "naivo" butstrapa metodi un Rao-Wu butstrapa metodi, kas piemērota gan vienkāršākiem, gan komplicētākiem izlašu dizainiem. Darba praktiskajā daļā, simulējot dažādu dizainu izlases, apskatīto butstrapa metožu novērtējumi tiek salīdzināti ar īstajām vērtībām un novērtējumiem, kas iegūti izmantojot klasiskās novērtēšanas formulas. Darba nobeigumā tiek secināts, ka Rao-Wu butstraps dod labus novērtējumus divpakāpju izlašu gadījumos, kad neviena no izlases pakāpēm n…
Neutrophils: Between host defence, immune modulation, and tissue injury.
2015
Neutrophils, the most abundant human immune cells, are rapidly recruited to sites of infection, where they fulfill their life-saving antimicrobial functions. While traditionally regarded as short-lived phagocytes, recent findings on long-term survival, neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, heterogeneity and plasticity, suppressive functions, and tissue injury have expanded our understanding of their diverse role in infection and inflammation. This review summarises our current understanding of neutrophils in host-pathogen interactions and disease involvement, illustrating the versatility and plasticity of the neutrophil, moving between host defence, immune modulation, and tissue da…
