ESPLORANDO IL MEDIOEVO: HENRY GALLY KNIGHT E LA SICILIA

2018

This essay is dedicated to the figure of Henry Gally Knight, a well-known british expert of medieval architecture, who decided to reach Sicily in 1836 to complete his Norman architecture investigations, together with the architect George Moore. During his stay in the island, besides visiting more traditional landmarks of classical antiquity, Gally Knight’s specific interests will lead him not only to study prestigious architectural complexes like Monreale and Cefalù, but also to trace the medieval vestiges even of the island’s inner parts, such as Randazzo, Maniace, Troina. Gally Knight’s tour and the esulting volumes he published – The Normans in Sicily: being a Sequel to “An architectural…

Smooth and non-smooth traveling wave solutions of some generalized Camassa–Holm equations

2014

In this paper we employ two recent analytical approaches to investigate the possible classes of traveling wave solutions of some members of a recently-derived integrable family of generalized Camassa-Holm (GCH) equations. A recent, novel application of phase-plane analysis is employed to analyze the singular traveling wave equations of three of the GCH NLPDEs, i.e. the possible non-smooth peakon, cuspon and compacton solutions. Two of the GCH equations do not support singular traveling waves. The third equation supports four-segmented, non-smooth $M$-wave solutions, while the fourth supports both solitary (peakon) and periodic (cuspon) cusp waves in different parameter regimes. Moreover, sm…

Regular and singular pulse and front solutions and possible isochronous behavior in the short-pulse equation: Phase-plane, multi-infinite series and …

2014

In this paper we employ three recent analytical approaches to investigate the possible classes of traveling wave solutions of some members of a family of so-called short-pulse equations (SPE). A recent, novel application of phase-plane analysis is first employed to show the existence of breaking kink wave solutions in certain parameter regimes. Secondly, smooth traveling waves are derived using a recent technique to derive convergent multi-infinite series solutions for the homoclinic (heteroclinic) orbits of the traveling-wave equations for the SPE equation, as well as for its generalized version with arbitrary coefficients. These correspond to pulse (kink or shock) solutions respectively o…

From the South. Ernesto Basile's Routes and Destinations

2014

Except for a few gaps, the Basile's archive is one of the best maintained contemporary architectural archives in Europe. Basile wrote extensively about his travels and discussed their context and significance. The documents range from reports on the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, to stories of Ortensio Lando, the sixteenth-century Italian humanist and traveler, who moved "from the far Sicily to the edge of the Alps".

Probing the origin of cosmic-rays with extremely high energy neutrinos using the IceCube Observatory

2013

We have searched for extremely high energy neutrinos using data taken with the IceCube detector between May 2010 and May 2012. Two neutrino induced particle shower events with energies around 1 PeV were observed, as reported previously. In this work, we investigate whether these events could originate from cosmogenic neutrinos produced in the interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic-rays with ambient photons while propagating through intergalactic space. Exploiting IceCube's large exposure for extremely high energy neutrinos and the lack of observed events above 100 PeV, we can rule out the corresponding models at more than 90% confidence level. The model independent quasi-differential 90% …

Improving table compression with combinatorial optimization

2002

We study the problem of compressing massive tables within the partition-training paradigm introduced by Buchsbaum et al. [SODA'00], in which a table is partitioned by an off-line training procedure into disjoint intervals of columns, each of which is compressed separately by a standard, on-line compressor like gzip. We provide a new theory that unifies previous experimental observations on partitioning and heuristic observations on column permutation, all of which are used to improve compression rates. Based on the theory, we devise the first on-line training algorithms for table compression, which can be applied to individual files, not just continuously operating sources; and also a new, …

Multi-scale analysis of the European airspace using network community detection

2014

We show that the European airspace can be represented as a multi-scale traffic network whose nodes are airports, sectors, or navigation points and links are defined and weighted according to the traffic of flights between the nodes. By using a unique database of the air traffic in the European airspace, we investigate the architecture of these networks with a special emphasis on their community structure. We propose that unsupervised network community detection algorithms can be used to monitor the current use of the airspaces and improve it by guiding the design of new ones. Specifically, we compare the performance of three community detection algorithms, also by using a null model which t…

Ar ceļošanas vajadzībām saistītās informācijas sociālā tīklā FaceBook novērtējums

2019
