Ab Initio Liquid Water Dynamics in Aqueous TMAO Solution

2015

Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations in trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO)-D2O solution are employed to elucidate the effects of TMAO on the reorientational dynamics of D2O molecules. By decomposing the O-D groups of the D2O molecules into specific subensembles, we reveal that water reorientational dynamics are retarded considerably in the vicinity of the hydrophilic TMAO oxygen (O(TMAO)) atom, due to the O-D···O(TMAO) hydrogen-bond. We find that this reorientational motion is governed by two distinct mechanisms: The O-D group rotates (1) after breaking the O-D···O(TMAO) hydrogen-bond, or (2) together with the TMAO molecule while keeping this hydrogen-bond intact. While the orientatio…

Triple-Quantum Two-Dimensional 27Al Magic Angle Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study of the Aluminum Incorporation in Calcium Silicate Hydrates

1998

Triple-quantum two-dimensional 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al 3Q-MAS NMR) was used to characterize the substitution of Si4+ by Al3+ into the Te−Oc−Te structure of calcium silicate hydrates (C−S−H). This substitution was studied with C−S−H having an Oc/Te ratio of 1 and in equilibrium with Al(OH)3 in aqueous suspensions. In the absence of NaOH, no substitution into the C−S−H structure occurred. Addition of NaOH in the preparation increased the concentration of Al(OH)4- and favored substitution. The deficit of charge resulting from this substitution was compensated by the accommodation of sodium in the interlayer space of the C−S−H. Increasing levels of substituted…

Fractional dissolution of “solid” unsubstituted cellulose

2000

Activated cellulose (Solucell, DP w = 1400) was extracted stepwise at room temperatures by means of mixed solvents consisting of N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and LiCl, starting with a salt concentration of 1 wt.-% and increasing it in increments of 1 wt.-% up to 7 wt.-%. Upon the regeneration of the thus obtained cellulose fractions by pouring the solutions dropwise into a large surplus of water, part of the mixed solvent is occluded in the polymer. For that reason the cellulose samples were purified by redissolving them in Ni-tren and by a second precipitation. This process, however, leads to pronounced polymer degradation. For that reason we have used a spinning nozzle to press the extrac…

The Distribution and Chronology of Trading Equipment in Present-Day Latvia in the Tenth to Thirteenth Centuries

2017

This article brings together the main research findings of recent years relating to tenth to thirteenth-century trading equipment from present-day Latvia. Finds of collapsible scales and weights from all regions of Latvia have been mapped and investigated. These include finds from archaeological sites in the Zemgale and Kurzeme regions that have previously not been extensively analysed. Issues relating to the chronology of the scales and weights are discussed. The main trade routes and the dynamics of trade contacts are determined, based on the distribution of the material in different regions. Key words: trade routes, chronology, scales, weights. A Holocene relative sea-level database for the Baltic Sea

2021

Highlights: • A first standardized and publicly available Holocene relative sea-level database for the Baltic Sea is presented. • The database holds 1099 revised data points with an estimation of vertical and chronological uncertainties. • Negative RSL tendencies prevail over the positive and complex tendencies in the Baltic Sea Basin. • Mid-Holocene RSL highstand occurred around 7.5–6.5 ka BP being consistent with the end of the final melting of the LIS. • The contribution of ice loading in the eastern Baltic Sea Basin is likely overestimated in the ICE-5G and ICE-6G_C models. Abstract: We present a compilation and analysis of 1099 Holocene relative shore-level (RSL) indicators located aro…

Regional inequality and economic development in Spain, 1860–2010

2016

Abstract Fifty years ago Jeffrey G. Williamson suggested that during the process of economic development regional income differences trace out an inverted U-shaped pattern. Since then several studies have tested this hypothesis. Yet, most of these only explore particular stages of development. This study, however, investigates the long-term evolution of regional income inequality. Using a novel dataset spanning 150 years, we describe per-capita GDP disparities across Spanish provinces (NUTS3) from 1860 to 2010. Moreover, to gain a deeper understanding of regional inequality, we examine other relevant dimensions: modality, mobility and spatial clustering. Overall, the findings confirm the ex…

Spatial distribution of the arctic haze aerosol size distribution in western and eastern Arctic

1997

Abstract Since June 1993, four flight campaigns to the Arctic have been carried out by a group of scientists from Russia and Germany. Optical remote-sensing methods and in-situ chemical and aerosol measurements have been combined on board a Russian IL-18 research aircraft. From arctic air bases in Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and Spitsbergen, respectively, flights have been undertaken to determine spatial structure of arctic haze events. This paper reports on aerosol data obtained during the expedition of Spring 1994. Haze events have been found in the east and west Arctic, containing about the same concentration of particles. Horizontal and vertical layer extensions are given and the size dist…

Dirichlet Boundary Value Problem for the Second Order Asymptotically Linear System

2016

We consider the second order system x′′=f(x) with the Dirichlet boundary conditions x(0)=0=x(1), where the vector field f∈C1(Rn,Rn) is asymptotically linear and f(0)=0. We provide the existence and multiplicity results using the vector field rotation theory.

Delay-Probability-Distribution-Dependent FIR Filtering Design with Envelope Constraints

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/930927 Open Access This paper studies the problem of H∞ finite-impulse response (FIR) filtering design of time-delay system. The time-delay considered here is time-varying meanwhile with a certain stochastic characteristic, and the probability of delay distribution is assumed to be known. Furthermore, the requirement of pulse-shape is also considered in filter design. Employing the information about the size and probability distribution of delay, a delay-probability-distribution-dependent criterion is proposed for the filtering error syst…
