Abstract Starting from triethylene glycol, monodisperse polyethylene oxides of a molecular weight (MW) up to 2000 (degree of polymerisation (DP) During the first step the ditosylate of triethylene glycol is reacted with the sodium alkoxide of the same diol at room temperature. The condesation product (polymer homologues of triethylene glycol) was separated by molecular distillation and yielded the pure oligomers nonaethylene glycol (DP = 9, MW 414) and pentadecaethylene glycol (DP = 15, MW = 678), as proved by gel chromatography. Hydrolysis and polycondensation of the coupling agent (aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS), axially coordinated to the redox-active complex [Rh 2 (form) 2 (CH 3 COO) 2 -(APS) 2 ], lead to the insertion of redox-active inorganic microdomains into a siloxane network; the new polymers undergo cyclic redox reactions indicating that dirhodium(II,II) centres retain their redox activity even when incorporated into siloxane networks.

Abstract Some 1,2-disubstituted cyclopentanes were synthesized. These were methyl 9-(2-butyl-cyclopentyl)-8-nonenoate, methyl 7-(2-hexyl-cyclopentyl)-6-heptenoate and methyl 5-(2-octyl-cyclopentyl)-4-pentenoate and their corresponding alkanoates. The synthesis involved a Michael addition of alkylmagnesium bromide to an unsaturated cyclic ester. The resulting cis and trans ethyl 2-alkylcyclopentane carboxylate were further converted to the alcohols then to the aldehydes. The aldehydes were condensed with the ylide derived from the (ω-carboxyalkyl)-triphenylphosphonium bromide and methylsulfinylmethide in DMSO to give unsaturated C18 cyclic fatty acid monomers. Perfluorarylborane Lewis acids catalyse the addition of silicon-hydrogen bonds across C=C, C=N and C=O double bonds. This 'metal-free' hydrosilylation has been proposed to occur via borane activation of the silane Si-H bond, rather than through classical Lewis acid/base adducts with the substrate. However, the key borane/silane adduct had not been observed experimentally. Here it is shown that the strongly Lewis acidic, antiaromatic 1,2,3-tris(pentafluorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-1-boraindene forms an observable, isolable adduct with triethylsilane. Design of nutrient removal activated sludge systems

A mechanistic mathematical model for nutrient and organic matter removal was used to describe the behavior of a nitrification denitrification enhanced biological phosphorus removal (NDEBPR) system. This model was implemented in a user-friendly software DESASS (design and simulation of activated sludge systems). A 484-L pilot plant was operated to verify the model results. The pilot plant was operated for three years over three different sludge ages. The validity of the model was confirmed with data from the pilot plant. Also, the utility of DESASS as a valuable tool for designing NDEBPR systems was confirmed.

Mechanism of anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of aluminium alkyls

Methyl methacrylate was polymerized with tert-butyl lithium in the presence of triethylaluminium or triisobutylaluminium at 78°C in toluene. As indicated by GPC and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, the polymerization is accompanied by side reactions. The lower oligomers were fractionated by distillation and characterised by NMR, FT-IR, UV and electron impact (EI) mass spectrometry. All these data show that part of the polymer chains are carrying exactly one tert-butyl isoprenyl ketone unit. In order to avoid the formation of tert-butyl isoprenyl ketone a molar ratio of Al/Li>2 is necessary.
