Stain-free virtual histology of Bombus terrestris compound eyes by laboratory phase-contrast nano-CT

2021

The visual systems of pollinating insects are studied to understand the effects of a changing environment, and are to date imaged using microscopy or micro-CT. Microscopy only allows two-dimensional imaging and conventional micro-CT requires heavy-metal staining of the samples. Here we present virtual histology of compound eyes of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) using a laboratory nano-CT system. Propagation-based phase-contrast CT allows three-dimensional imaging of samples without using any staining. Micrometre-resolution images of the microanatomy of the eyes were reconstructed, and the features identified in CT (cornea, crystalline cones, pigment, photoreceptor cells, basement membrane) w…

Metaphysics of cosmological models

2023

This article aims to address the metaphysical dimension of cosmological models, be they mythological, philosophical, religious or modern scientific models, using multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary methodology. Such an approach is a novelty, both in the theological field and in the philosophical field and secular sciences, which studies the origin of humans and the universe. Contribution: The originality of this article consists in introducing the concept of transcendental cosmology, which, along with spiritual cosmology, can be a serious theological and philosophical reply to the Bing Bang theory.

Comparative investigation of the macromolecular composition of mycelia forms Thielavia terrestris by infrared spectroscopy

1999

Using analytical and infrared spectroscopic methods, the differences between the composition of diffuse and pellet forms of mycelium of the ascomycete Thielavia terrestris were described. Quantitative estimates of the amounts of protein, nucleic acids and carbohydrates in T. terrestris showed a predominance of catabolic processes in the metabolism of the pelleted form, in comparison to the diffused form.

Genetic integrity of European wildcats: Variation across biomes mandates geographically tailored conservation strategies

2022

Hybridisation between domestic and wild taxa can pose severe threats to wildlife conservation, and human-induced hybridisation, often linked to species' introductions and habitat degradation, may promote reproductive opportunities between species for which natural interbreeding would be highly unlikely. Using a biome-specific approach, we examine the effects of a suite of ecological drivers on the European wildcat's genetic integrity, while assessing the role played by protected areas in this process. We used genotype data from 1217 putative European wildcat samples from 13 European countries to assess the effects of landcover, disturbance and legal landscape protection on the European wild…

Migration, Identity, and Threatened Mental Health: Examples from Contemporary Fiction.

2018

In 2015, the world saw 244 million international migrants. Migration has been shown to be both a protective and a risk factor for mental health, depending on circumstances. Furthermore, culture has an impact on perceptions and constructions of mental illness and identity, both of which can be challenged through migration. Using a qualitative research approach, we analysed five internationally acclaimed and influential novels and one theatre play that focus on aspects of identity, migration, and threatened mental health. As a mirror of society, fiction can help to understand perceptions of identity and mental suffering on an intrapsychic and societal level, while at the same time society its…

Piecpadsmitās grupas metālu halkogenīdu plāno kārtiņu sintēze, fizikālo īpašību raksturojums un pielietojums termoelektriskās ierīcēs

2019

Octahedral distortion caused by hydrogen bonding in tris(diethylammonium) hexachloridoantimonate(III).

2010

The factors influencing the distortion of inorganic anions in the structures of chloridoantimonates(III) with organic cations, in spite of numerous structural studies on those compounds, have not been clearly described and separated. The title compound, [(C(2)H(5))(2)NH(2)](3)[SbCl(6)], consisting of isolated distorted [SbCl(6)](3-) octahedra that have C(3) symmetry and [(C(2)H(5))(2)NH(2)](+) cations, unequivocally shows the role played by hydrogen bonding in the geometry variations of inorganic anions. The organic cations, which are linked to the inorganic substructure through N-H...Cl hydrogen bonds, are clearly responsible for the distortion of the octahedral coordination of Sb(III) in …

Terricaulis silvestris gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel prosthecate, budding member of the family Caulobacteraceae isolated from forest soil

2020

The family Caulobacteraceae comprises prosthecate bacteria with a dimorphic cell cycle and also non-prosthecate bacteria. Cells of all described species divide by binary fission. Strain 0127_4T was isolated from forest soil in Baden Württemberg (Germany) and determined to be the first representative of the family Caulobacteraceae which divided by budding. Cells of strain 0127_4T were Gram-negative, rod-shaped, prosthecate, motile by means of a polar flagellum, non-spore-forming and non-capsulated. The strain formed small white colonies and grew aerobically and chemo-organotrophically utilizing organic acids, amino acids and proteinaceous substrates. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated…

Glucose, fructose and saccharose metabolism in Dipsacus silvestris infected by Cucumber mosaic virus.

2007

Dipsacus silvestris Miller (or Fuller’s Teasel) (Dipsacaceae) showing stunting, chlorotic leaf mosaic and narrowing of the lamina, has been found for the first time in Italy naturally infected by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). This virus was detected in PAS-ELISA tests and molecularly characterized by applying RT-PCR, using specific primers for the movement protein gene of RNA3 (forward 5’ CTA GGC TTT CCA AGC TAC CAG 3’; reverse 5’ CTA AAG ACC GTT AAC CAC CTG C 3’). The content of glucose, fructose and saccharose, determined by HPLC analysis, was calculated in both healthy (h) and CMV-infected (i) D. silvestris plants during the chronic infection period. An higher content of these carbohydrat…
