The effect of fish life-history structures on the topologies of aquatic food webs

2021

Biological organisms can vastly change their ecological functionality due to changes in body size and diet across their life. Consequently, it has been increasingly recognized that to attain sufficient biological realism, food webs may need to include life-history structures. The objective of the work is to study theoretically whether and how the inclusion of life-history structures affects the food web topology. Topological research was done by applying network theory metrics for three different food web types with two different sizes that were generated by using the niche-model. The dynamical modeling was performed by using an allometric trophic network modeling approach. The different ty…

Age, condition and dominance-related sexual ornament size before and during the breeding season in the black grouse Lyrurus tetrix

2018

Male ornaments function as honest cues of male quality in many species and are subject to intra- and intersexual selection. These ornaments are generally studied during peak expression, however their size outside the breeding season may determine ultimate ornament size and costliness, and as such reproductive success. We investigated whether male black grouse Lyrurus tetrix eye comb size was related to age, condition and measures of male dominance before and during the breeding season. Total combined eye comb size began to increase ~70 d before the start of the breeding season. Adult males (aged ≥ 2 yr old) had consistently larger eye combs than younger males (1 yr old) both before and duri…

Is the impact of environmental noise visible in the dynamics of age-structured populations?

2001

Climate change has ignited lively research into its impact on various population–level processes. The research agenda in ecology says that some of the fluctuations in population size are accountable for by the external noise (e.g. weather) modulating the dynamics of populations. We obeyed the agenda by assuming population growth after a resource–limited Leslie matrix model in an age–structured population. The renewal process was disturbed by superimposing noise on the development of numbers in one or several age groups. We constructed models for iteroparous and semelparous breeders so that, for both categories, the population growth rate was matching. We analysed how the modulated populatio…

Role of host genetic diversity for susceptibility-to-infection in the evolution of virulence of a plant virus

2019

Predicting viral emergence is difficult due to the stochastic nature of the underlying processes and the many factors that govern pathogen evolution. Environmental factors affecting the host, the pathogen and the interaction between both are key in emergence. In particular, infectious disease dynamics are affected by spatiotemporal heterogeneity in their environments. A broad knowledge of these factors will allow better estimating where and when viral emergence is more likely to occur. Here, we investigate how the population structure for susceptibility-to-infection genes of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana shapes the evolution of Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV). For doing so we have evolved TuMV …

FeatherCNN: Fast Inference Computation with TensorGEMM on ARM Architectures

2020

Deep Learning is ubiquitous in a wide field of applications ranging from research to industry. In comparison to time-consuming iterative training of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), inference is a relatively lightweight operation making it amenable to execution on mobile devices. Nevertheless, lower latency and higher computation efficiency are crucial to allow for complex models and prolonged battery life. Addressing the aforementioned challenges, we propose FeatherCNN – a fast inference library for ARM CPUs – targeting the performance ceiling of mobile devices. FeatherCNN employs three key techniques: 1) A highly efficient TensorGEMM (generalized matrix multiplication) routine is app…

LMI-based 2D-3D Registration: from Uncalibrated Images to Euclidean Scene

2015

International audience; This paper investigates the problem of registering a scanned scene, represented by 3D Euclidean point coordinates , and two or more uncalibrated cameras. An unknown subset of the scanned points have their image projections detected and matched across images. The proposed approach assumes the cameras only known in some arbitrary projective frame and no calibration or autocalibration is required. The devised solution is based on a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) framework that allows simultaneously estimating the projective transformation relating the cameras to the scene and establishing 2D-3D correspondences without triangulating image points. The proposed LMI framewo…

Consistent Clustering of Elements in Large Pairwise Comparison Matrices

2018

[EN] In multi-attribute decision making the number of decision elements under consideration may be huge, especially for complex, real-world problems. Typically these elements are clustered and then the clusters organized hierarchically to reduce the number of elements to be simultaneously handled. These decomposition methodologies are intended to bring the problem within the cognitive ability of decision makers. However, such methodologies have disadvantages, and it may happen that such a priori clustering is not clear, and/or the problem has previously been addressed without any grouping action. This is the situation for the case study we address, in which a panel of experts gives opinions…

Reducing the observation error in a WSN through a consensus-based subspace projection

2013

An essential process in a Wireless Sensor Network is the noise mitigation of the measured data, by exploiting their spatial correlation. A widely used technique to achieve this reduction is to project the measured data into a proper subspace. We present a low complexity and distributed algorithm to perform this projection. Unlike other algorithms existing in the literature, which require the number of connections at every node to be larger than the dimension of the involved subspace, our algorithm does not require such dense network topologies for its applicability, making it suitable for a larger number of scenarios. Our proposed algorithm is based on the execution of several consensus pro…

Hankelet-based action classification for motor intention recognition

2017

Powered lower-limb prostheses require a natural, and an easy-to-use, interface for communicating amputee’s motor intention in order to select the appropriate motor program in any given context, or simply to commute from active (powered) to passive mode of functioning. To be widely accepted, such an interface should not put additional cognitive load at the end-user, it should be reliable and minimally invasive. In this paper we present a one such interface based on a robust method for detecting and recognizing motor actions from a low-cost wearable sensor network mounted on a sound leg providing inertial (accelerometer, gyrometer and magnetometer) data in real-time. We assume that the sensor…

Disturbance observer-based disturbance attenuation control for a class of stochastic systems

2016

This paper studies a class of stochastic systems with multiple disturbances which include the disturbance with partially-known information and the white noise. A disturbance observer is constructed to estimate the disturbance with partially-known information, based on which, a disturbance observer-based disturbance attenuation control (DOBDAC) scheme is proposed by combining pole placement and linear matrix inequality (LMI) methods.
