Failure to differentiate Cryptosporidium parvum from C. meleagridis based on PCR amplification of eight DNA sequences.
1998
ABSTRACT In order to determine the specificities of PCR-based assays used for detecting Cryptosporidium parvum DNA, eight pairs of previously described PCR primers targeting six distinct regions of the Cryptosporidium genome were evaluated for the detection of C. parvum , the agent of human cryptosporidiosis, and C. muris , C. baileyi , and C. meleagridis , three Cryptosporidium species that infect birds or mammals but are not considered to be human pathogens. The four Cryptosporidium species were divided into two groups: C. parvum and C. meleagridis , which gave the same-sized fragments with all the reactions, and C. muris and C. baileyi , which gave positive results with primer pairs targ…
ChemInform Abstract: One-Step Synthesis, Crystallographic Studies and Antimicrobial Activity of New 4-Diazopyrazole Derivatives.
2010
Summary A number of new 4-diazopyrazole derivatives were prepared by the reaction of 1- R -3-methyl-5(R 1 -substituted)benzamidopyrazoles with a sevenfold excess of nitrous acid in acetic medium. The compounds were tested for activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Paecilomyces varioti . The highest microbial susceptibility was shown by Gram-positive bacteria, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in the range 0.5–12.5 μg/mL. For S aureus the R 1 substituents were screened utilizing the Topliss operational scheme. The 4-nitro g…

Malaria and the heart: Two rare case reports of plasmodium falciparum-associated pericarditis
2017
Malaria is one of the most important parasitic diseases in the world, causing significant mortality and morbidity in the tropical regions1 . Although symptoms can range from a mild fever to severe complicated forms, there are limited published data on cardiac involvement of malaria and only a few studies have been carried out regarding cardiac function in severe malaria2–3. Cardiac involvement in the course of malaria ranges from severe forms with hypatension, shock, circulatory collapse and impaired haemodynamic function, to mild disorders documented by Electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiography4–6. Pericardial involvement in malaria is a very rare event7–8. We report here two cases of f…
Impact of Manaus City on the Amazon Green Ocean atmosphere: Ozone production, precursor sensitivity and aerosol load
2010
As a contribution to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia – Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment (LBA-CLAIRE-2001) field campaign in the heart of the Amazon Basin, we analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of the urban plume of Manaus City during the wet-to-dry season transition period in July 2001. During the flights, we performed vertical stacks of crosswind transects in the urban outflow downwind of Manaus City, measuring a comprehensive set of trace constituents including O3, NO, NO2, CO, VOC, CO2, and H2O. Aerosol loads were characterized by concentrations of total aerosol number (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and by light scattering proper…
Tropical Temperate Toughs over southern Africa: mechanisms and evolution in response to climate change
2015
In the Southern Hemisphere, Southern Africa and the south-west Indian Ocean are one of the three preferred regions where interactions between the tropics and midlatitudes develop. This is the South Indian Convergence Zone (SICZ), where northwest-southeast oriented cloud bands form at the synoptic scale (between 3 and 5 days). These bands are mainly found during the austral summer and are commonly referred to as tropical temperate troughs (TTTs). This research aims at improving our knowledge related to TTTs, with a study on the dynamics associated with these systems, and an analysis of their possible evolution during the 21st century. The first part of this thesis aims at identifying favorab…
Investigations on the geographical variability of the human transferrins.
1971
On the basis of own and from the widely scattered literature compiled materials the geographical distribution of the transferrin alleles is discussed. They reveal a characteristic distribution pattern, as the slow Tf variants produced by TfD alleles are obviously more frequent in tropical than in non-tropical populations. Considering similar results in cattle and its interpretation by Ashton (1958, 1965), it is hypothesized, that the relatively high TfΓ frequencies in tropical biotops might be a selective adaptation to their special climatic conditions. In this connection an association between slowly moving transferrin proteins in man and tolerance to hotter climates — as could be found in…
Control of end-of-life oxygen-containing groups accumulation in biopolyesters through introduction of crosslinked polysaccharide particles
2021
The formulation of bio-based materials with good performance in service and controlled end-of-life is imperative for an effective circular economy. In this work, an innovative approach to induce and control the end-of-life of biodegradable polyesters through introduction of crosslinked polysaccharide particles is proposed. Chitosan (Ch) has been subjected to ionotropically crosslinking and then added to polylactic acid (PLA) at different amounts (1.0–4.0%w) by melt mixing. All obtained results suggest that the addition of crosslinked Ch (cCh) particles does not modify significantly the investigated biopolyester properties. Specifically, the thermal analysis of the composites reveals that th…
Green coffee, bioactive compounds’ analysis of experimental cultivation in Sicily: a new frontier in the Sicilian food sector
2023
Recently, climate change represents a new possibility for tropical cultivars fruit in Mediterranean areas. The focus of this work is the evaluation of the real possibility of coffee cultivation in Sicily, like coffee plants grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The objective was to evaluate plant adaptation to our climate and to study the chemical qualities of green coffee pulps and seeds: total phenolic content, antiradical capacity, fatty acids, amino acids, alkaloids, vitamins, proximate composition, polyphenolic profile and other bioactive compounds of cosmetic, pharmaceutical and agrary interest. Temperature, light and vegetative growth of Coffea arabica L. cv. “Caturra” plants we…
