Individualized Tumor Therapy: Biomarkers and Possibilities for Targeted Therapy with Natural Products

Although many tumors respond to chemotherapy, not all patients benefit from anticancer drugs. Tumors often develop resistance to drugs and concentrations sufficient to eradicate the cancer cannot be used due to the severe side effects of chemotherapy. In the present chapter, we give an overview of research on biomarkers with prognostic and predictive value and summarize our own efforts in this context. With a battery of biomarkers and corresponding synthetic and natural targeted drugs, it is likely that custom-tailored combination treatments will soon become a reality and that each individual cancer patient will be treated based on his or her individual molecular tumor architecture.

Bone cancer including primary bone cancer and metastatic bone cancer, remains a challenge claiming millions of lives and affecting the life quality of survivors. Conventional treatments of bone cancer include wide surgical resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Monitoring noise-resonant effects in cancer growth influenced by external fluctuations and periodic treatment

In the paper we investigate a mathematical model describing the growth of tumor in the presence of immune response of a host organism. The dynamics of tumor and immune cells is based on the generic Michaelis-Menten kinetics depicting interaction and competition between the tumor and the immune system. The appropriate phenomenological equation modeling cell-mediated immune surveillance against cancer is of the predator-prey form and exhibits bistability within a given choice of the immune response-related parameters. Not just for tumor targeting: unmet medical needs and opportunities for nanomedicine.

During the last 3 decades, nanomedicines have provided novel opportunities to improve the delivery of chemotherapeutics in cancer therapy effectively. However, many principles learnt from there have the potential to be transferred to other diseases. This perspective article, on the one hand, critically reflects the limitations of nanomedicines in tumor therapy and, on the other hand, provides alternative examples of nanomedicinal applications in immunotherapy, noninvasive drug deliveries across epithelial barriers and strategies to combat intra- and extra-cellular bacterial infections. A comprehensive literature review was performed on liver intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique and its applications. Heterogeneous data have been reported. IVIM parameters are magnetic field strength dependent to a mild extent. A lower Dslow (D) value at 3 T than at 1.5 T and higher perfusion fraction (PF) value at 3 T than at 1.5 T were noted. An increased number of b values are associated with increased IVIM parameter measurement accuracy.
