STRAIN ENERGY EVALUATION IN STRUCTURES HAVING ZONE-WISE PHYSICAL- MECHANICAL QUANTITIES

2013

Among the possible aims of structural analysis inside some engineering spheres it can be useful to know the strain energy stored in all or in a part of the structure caused by assigned external actions, like the boundary and domain quantities. This serves to evaluate globally whether an assigned portion of structure undergoes an excessive store of energy able to compromise the stability of all the structure. This evaluation can be carried out through boundary work obtained using appropriate boundary generalized quantities connected to the results of the analysis on the whole structure. The advantage consists in using a very restricted number of quantities which, because of the characteristi…

Extended valence theory perspective on consumers' e-waste recycling intentions in Japan

2021

The gravity of the electronic waste (e-waste) crisis can be attributed to consumers' low participation in ensuring the proper disposal of such materials. Motivating consumers to recycle e-waste requires a deeper understanding of the dimensions that underlie behavioral intentions. Accordingly, the present study uses the novel framework of Valence Theory (VT) to examine how consumers evaluate their decision to recycle e-waste. The authors propose an extended VT model incorporating consumer values (value compatibility, openness to change, and environmental concerns), which is validated using cross-sectional survey data from 774 Japanese consumers. We also examine the role of different moderato…

Drivers of CO2 emissions in the former Soviet Union: A country level IPAT analysis from 1990 to 2010

2013

There are a small number of countries that have managed to decrease emissions over the last two decades e most of them emerged from the FSU (former Soviet Union ). CO2 emissions for these countries combined have decreased by 35% between 1990 and 2010, while global emissions increased by 44%. Most studies investigate the FSU as a single block ignoring the significant and persistent diversity among countries in the region. This study is the first providing detailed country by country analyses determining factors for changes in post-Soviet republics by applying a disaggregated version of the commonly used (IPAT) index decomposition analysis including energy intensity, affluence industrializati…

Intra-urban residential differentiation in the post-Soviet city: the case of Riga, Latvia

2014

Cities in many Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries have transformed rapidly since the political and socio-economic restructuring started in the early 1990s. Economi reforms, growing income inequalities, changes in housing system and selective residential mobility are resulting in increasing socio-spatial differentiation among urban neighbourhoods also in Riga. In addition, litt le is known about the ethnic dimension of intra-urban residential differentiation, despite the existence of sizeable minority populations. The focus on ethnicity is important, since Riga is the only capital city in the Baltic States where the ethnic majority is outnumbered by the non-Latvian minority. This p…

Scheduling a cellular manufacturing system with GA

2002

The flexible manufacturing cell scheduling problem is considered with a multi-objective approach, pursuing together makespan minimisation and the in process job wait minimisation. The formulation of the scheduling problem is discussed, analysing how to generate well suited sequences, like generalised permutation sequences, and the proper construction of a JIT timing of activities. An evolutionary sequencing algorithm based on both classic genetic operators and hybrid operators is then proposed. The hybrid operators have been introduced to construct highly fit initial population, to perform periodically a local search on the population and to maintain enough genetical diversity in the actual…

Multidomain SBEM analysis of two dimensional elastoplastic-contact problems

2012

The Symmetric Boundary Element Method based on the Galerkin hypotheses has found application in the nonlinear analysis of plasticity and contact-detachment problems, but dealt with separately. In this paper we wants to treat these complex phenomena together. This method works in structures by introducing a subdivision into sub-structures, distinguished into macroelements, where elastic behaviour is assumed, and bem-elements, where it is possible for plastic strains to occur. In all the sub-structures, elasticity equations are written and regularity conditions in weighted (weak) form and/or in nodal (strong) form between boundaries have to be introduced, to attain the solving equation system.

A magnetostrictive generator for sensors network

2017

In this paper we present a vibration harvesting electric power generator based on magnetostrictive effect for sensors network in hazardous area and we validate it experimentally. The generator has been designed by using Dynamic Preisach hysteresis Model (DPM). DPM is a development of classical Preisach Model which is able to include dynamical features in the mathematical model of hysteresis. We measure the output power capability of the generator and we estimate its power density generation capability.

Optimal matching between optical rectennas and harvester circuits

2017

This paper deals with optimal coupling issues between rectennas and harvesting circuits. An optical rectenna consists of a nanoantenna usually coupled with an ultra-high speed rectifier. These devices aim to receive and convert solar and thermal radiation in a DC voltage, while a harvester circuit provides the energy to be stored. The rectenna impedance is influenced both by its structure and by the rectifying diode, the harvester circuit impedance has to be matched to optimize the power transfer. The purpose of this contribution is to discuss the best impedance conditions by taking into account the constraints that are due to the individual devices the conversion system consist of. Finally…
