X-ray diffraction microstructure analysis of mullite, quartz and corundum in porcelain insulators

Abstract The X-ray diffraction microstructure analysis has been performed on commercial samples of the silica and alumina porcelain insulators obtained at 1300 °C, with the same time of firing. The study was carried out on mullite, corundum and quartz by applying several integral breadth methods (i.e. the Williamson–Hall analysis, the Langford method and the Halder–Wagner approximation) and the Fourier analysis (Warren–Averbach method). The apparent crystallite sizes determined for the mullite are direction-dependent (anisotropic) and within each group of samples, on average, the greatest values are obtained along the direction [0 0 1]. Diffraction of a continuous laser beam (He-Ne) by standing ultrasonic waves of 260 Mcs/s in quartz has been investigated. Besides the principal maximum at exact Bragg-incidence, the variation of intensity of first order diffraction pattern with tilt angle shows up to 15 secondary maxima. The effective depth of sound field and the maximum variation of refractive index were determined by comparison with the theory ofBhatia andNoble.
Effective hydrostatic limits of pressure media for high‐pressure crystallographic studies

The behavior of a number of commonly used pressure media, including nitrogen, argon, 2-propanol, a 4:1 methanol–ethanol mixture, glycerol and various grades of silicone oil, has been examined by measuring the X-ray diffraction maxima from quartz single crystals loaded in a diamond-anvil cell with each of these pressure media in turn. In all cases, the onset of non-hydrostatic stresses within the medium is detectable as the broadening of the rocking curves of X-ray diffraction peaks from the single crystals. The onset of broadening of the rocking curves of quartz is detected at ∼9.8 GPa in a 4:1 mixture of methanol and ethanol and at ∼4.2 GPa in 2-propanol, essentially at the same pressures …
The formation of peak rings in large impact craters.

The Chicxulub impact crater, known for its link to the demise of the dinosaurs, also provides an opportunity to study rocks from a large impact structure. Large impact craters have “peak rings” that define a complex crater morphology. Morgan et al. looked at rocks from a drilling expedition through the peak rings of the Chicxulub impact crater (see the Perspective by Barton). The drill cores have features consistent with a model that postulates that a single over-heightened central peak collapsed into the multiple-peak-ring structure. Deformation textures and c-axis preferred orientations of quartz phenocrysts from porphyric dikes of the Alpine »Root Zone« have been formed under conditions of greenschist to low amphibolite facies. It is shown that the deformation textures as shear planes and kink bands, boudins, grain boundary sutures, subgrains, coarse and fine recrystallized grains, deformation lamellae and fractures are developed in a chronological sequence during first increasing and later decreasing temperatures. The c-axis orientations are chiefly influenced by kinking during the early stage of metamorphism and later by recrystallization but not by the initial orientations of the c-axes. Abstract In 1888, Hilbert proved that every nonnegative quartic form f = f ( x , y , z ) with real coefficients is a sum of three squares of quadratic forms. His proof was ahead of its time and used advanced methods from topology and algebraic geometry. Up to now, no elementary proof is known. Here we present a completely new approach. Although our proof is not easy, it uses only elementary techniques. As a by-product, it gives information on the number of representations f = p 1 2 + p 2 2 + p 3 2 of f up to orthogonal equivalence. In this paper, we study the following variant of the junta learning problem. We are given oracle access to a Boolean function f on n variables that only depends on k variables, and, when restricted to them, equals some predefined function h. The task is to identify the variables the function depends on. This is a generalisation of the Bernstein-Vazirani problem (when h is the XOR function) and the combinatorial group testing problem (when h is the OR function). We analyse the general case using the adversary bound, and give an alternative formulation for the quantum query complexity of this problem. International audience; Using the theory of bifurcation, we provide and find gap soliton dynamics in a nonlinear Klein-Gordon model with anharmonic, cubic, and quartic interactions immersed in a parametrized on-site substrate potential. The case of a deformable substrate potential allows theoretical adaptation of the model to various physical situations.
