A field methodology to study effects of UV radiation on fish larvae.

There is a considerable lack of in situ specific information about the effects of UV-B radiation on limnic animals studied in the field. We exposed larval pike (Esox lucius L.) in two types of cuvettes (glass and quartz) placed at different depths (5 or 15 cm) to natural solar UV or to artificially enhanced UV-B (lamps on 3 h per day), simulating the scenarios for coming decades. Dose realism and comparability with earlier laboratory experiments was the main purpose, and therefore UV-B irradiances to the surface as well as underwater irradiances were directly measured. Abstract The average degree of condensation of ethylene oxide/tert-octylphenol condensate surfactants can be estimated rapidly by u.v. and i.r. spectrometry. A topological treatment of the surfactant molecules (DARC system) and a group contribution model were applied to study the correlation between structures of ethylene oxide condensates with nonylsphenol and tert-octylphenol and their spectral characteristics such as extinction coefficient of the molecular absortion band. Using the experimental values of the spectral characteristics of an unknown smaple of an ethylene oxide condensate surfactant and the information parameters, previously determined by the mathematical treatment of a key population, it is possible to obtain their average condensation degree.

Until now the bystander effect had only been described in vertebrates. In the present study the existence of this effect has been demonstrated for the phylogenetically oldest metazoan phylum, the Porifera. We used the demosponge Suberites domuncula for the experiments in the two-chamber-system. The lower dish contained irradiated "donor" cells (single cells) and the upper dish the primmorphs ("recipient" primmorphs). The "donor" cells were treated with UV-B light (40 mJ/cm2) and 100 microM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), factors that exist also in the natural marine aquatic environment of sponges; these factors caused a high level of DNA strand breaks followed by a reduced viability of the cells.…

Evanescent wave-initiated photopolymerisation in an optically wave guiding PTFE-coated fused silica capillary using light-emitting diode as a light source, is established here as a way to fabricate monolithic porous layer open-tubular capillary columns with a potential in capillary separation methods; application of the obtained open-tubular columns as enzymatic microreactors for on-line protein digestion is demonstrated.

Creation of point defects by ArF (6.4 eV) and F2 laser (7.9 eV) irradiation in synthetic “wet” silica glass thermally loaded with interstitial O2 molecules was studied by optical absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance and infrared absorption. The presence of excess oxygen caused a significant increase of laser-induced ultraviolet (UV) absorption, which was 4 times (7.9 eV-irradiation) and > 20 times stronger (ArF irradiation) as compared to O2-free samples.
