Dimensional Regularization. Ultraviolet and Infrared Divergences
2015
The cornerstone of Quantum Field Theory is renormalization. We shall speak more about in the next chapters. Before, it is necessary to discuss the method. The best and most simple is, of course, dimensional regularization (doesn’t break the symmetries, doesn’t violate the Ward Identities, preserves Lorentz invariance, etc.). When explained consistently, it becomes very simple and clear. Here, we shortly discuss ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) divergences with a few examples. However, in Chap. 8, we shall extensively treat one-loop two and three-point functions and analyse many more examples of IR and UV divergences.
246. Analysis of signal-to-noise ratio for a 2-channels coil developed to enable transcranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (t…
2018
Abstract Purpose In recent years trans-cranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (tcMRgFUS) treatments have aroused large scientific and medical interest [1] . Usually, tcMRgFUS systems are integrated with 3 T systems which allow the use of the body RF coil for both real time imaging and MR-thermometry. At University Hospital of Palermo there is the world-first installation of a tcMRgFUS system integrated with a 1.5 T scanner. Here we present the characterization in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a dedicated RF coils suitably developed (by InSightec) to enable tcMRgFUS treatments with 1.5 T MR units. Methods and materials The focused ultrasound equipment (ExAblat…
The coupling of the X1Σ+and a3Σ+states of the atom pair Na + Cs and modelling cold collisions
2006
The states X1?+ and a3?+ correlated to the ground-state asymptote of Na (3s) and Cs (6s) atoms have been experimentally investigated using high resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The hyperfine splitting of the a3?+ state levels is partially resolved. Transitions to asymptotic vibrational levels of the a3?+ and X1?+ states were recorded simultaneously. The joint evaluation of the data of both the a3?+ and the X1?+ states allows us to determine accurate potential energy curves of both electronic states. Coupled-channels calculations are finally applied for deriving long range dispersion parameters and the exchange contribution of the molecular potentials, yielding a reliable descripti…
Ageing studies of TPB in noble gas detectors for dark matter and neutrinoless ββ decay searches
2017
Noble gases (Xe, Ar, Kr) are very attractive as detector media in Dark Matter search and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. However, the detection of their scintillation light (in the VUV spectral region) requires shifting the VUV light to visible light, where standard photosensors are more efficient. Tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) is widely used as wavelength shifter, absorbing the VUV light and re-emitting in the blue region (~430nm). TPB is an organic molecule that may degrade due to exposure to environmental agents and also to ultraviolet light. In this work, we present TPB ageing studies due to exposure to VUV light, aiming at quantifying the reduction of the absolute fluorescenc…
Laser driven structured quantum rings
2015
In this work we study harmonic emission from structured quantum rings (SQRs). In SQRs, electrons trapped in two-dimensional structures are further confined by an external potential composed of N scattering centers arranged on a circle. We build a suitable one-dimensional model Hamiltonian describing this class of systems and analytically solve the associated Schödinger equation. We find that the solution can be expressed in terms of Mathieu functions and focus on the specific case of N = 6. By exactly solving the time-dependent Schödinger equation, we then show how the harmonic response to linearly polarized lasers strongly depends on the ring physical parameters. The results illustrate how…
Space-Time Analogies in Optics
2011
Abstract The so-called space-time analogy constitutes a source of inspiration to understand, engineer, and implement new systems for ultrafast optical signal processing based on concepts borrowed from the well-established field of Fourier Optics. In this review, we start by describing in a comprehensive manner the most basic notions of this analogy and discuss some recent developments with state-of-the-art technology, including the silicon-chip-based time lens and ultra-dispersive Raman devices, among others. Apart from the applications in optical communications, special emphasis is paid on the collateral benefits that the “ultra” appellative brings in fields as diverse as optical frequency…
Performance evaluation of a very high resolution small animal PET imager using silicon scatter detectors
2007
A very high resolution positron emission tomography (PET) scanner for small animal imaging based on the idea of inserting a ring of high-granularity solid-state detectors into a conventional PET scanner is under investigation. A particularly interesting configuration of this concept, which takes the form of a degenerate Compton camera, is shown capable of providing sub-millimeter resolution with good sensitivity. We present a Compton PET system and estimate its performance using a proof-of-concept prototype. A prototype single-slice imaging instrument was constructed with two silicon detectors 1 mm thick, each having 512 1.4 mm x 1.4 mm pads arranged in a 32 x 16 array. The silicon detector…
LASERIX: an open facility for developments of Soft X-ray and EUV lasers and applications
2011
In this paper we report the perspectives of the development of the XUV laser sources and applications using High-power laser facilities. We focus our paper on the present status of the French LASERIX facility and more especially about its role in the development of the XUV laser sources considering the French "Institut de la Lumiere Extreme " (ILE) and the potential European project Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI). Finally, we present the scientific perspectives of X-ray laser sources developments using these laser facilities.
Towards high photon-number soft x-ray lasers
2011
We present an experimental design to independently pump two soft X-ray laser media suitable for a seed-amplifier configuration. Both the seed and the amplifier target are operated in the TCE scheme utilizing the DGRIP technique with its intrinsic travelling wave excitation. Controlled injection of the seed X-ray laser into the amplifier medium is realized via a spherical XUV mirror. The experimental design is perfectly appropriate for benchmarking combined simulations of the ARWEN and DeepOne code. A first experiment at the PHELIX laser utilizing this scheme has been conducted, demonstrating signs of amplification and allowing for the direct measurement of the gain life time of a Ni-like si…
Coronal loop hydrodynamics. The solar flare observedon November 12 1980 revisited: the UV line emission
2001
We revisit a well-studied solar flare whose X-ray emission originating from a simple loop structure was observed by most of the instruments on board SMM on November 12 1980. The X-ray emission of this flare, as observed with the XRP, was successfully modeled previously. Here we include a detailed modeling of the transition region and we compare the hydrodynamic results with the UVSP observations in two EUV lines, measured in areas smaller than the XRP rasters, covering only some portions of the flaring loop (the top and the foot-points). The single loop hydrodynamic model, which fits well the evolution of coronal lines (those observed with the XRP and the \FeXXI 1354.1 \AA line observed wit…
