Ca-rich carbonates associated with ultrabasic-ultramafic melts. Carbonatite or limestone xenoliths? A case study from the late Miocene Morron de Vill…
2016
The volcanic products of the late Miocene Morron de Villamayor volcano (Calatrava Volcanic Field, central Spain) are known for being one of the few outcrops of leucitites in the entire circum-Mediterranean area. These rocks are important because aragonite of mantle origin has been reported as inclusion in olivine macrocrysts. We use petrographic observations, mineral compositions, as well as oxygen and carbon isotope ratios coupled with experimental petrology to understand the origin of carbonate phase in these olivine-phyric rocks. Groundmass and macrocryst olivines range from δ18OVSMOW of +4.8‰, typical of mantle olivine values, to +7.4‰, indicating contamination by sedimentary carbonate.…
Ultrasound assisted method to increase soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of sewage sludge for digestion
2004
The aim of this study was to clarify the possibilities to increase the amount of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and methane production of sludge using ultrasound technologies with and without oxidising agents. The study was done using multivariate data analyses. The most important factors affected were discovered. Ultrasonically assisted disintegration increased clearly the amount of SCOD of sludge. Also more methane was produced from treated sludge in anaerobic batch assays compared to the sludge with no ultrasonic treatment. Multivariate data analysis showed that ultrasonic power, dry solid content of sludge (DS), sludge temperature and ultrasonic treatment time have the most signi…
Ultrastructure of the conus arteriosus ofScyliorhinus stellaris
1989
The functional morphology of the fourth chamber of the fish heart, the bulbus arteriosus, differs in teleosts and elasmobranchs. In elasmobranchs, this chamber is referred to as the conus arteriosus because its wall is made up of myocardial tissue in addition to elastic tissue. As a result of this feature, the function of the conus is very specialized. We report the basic ultrastructure of the wall of the conus arteriosus in the elasmobranch Scyllium stellare. The wall consists of three layers: the outer epicardial, the middle myocardial, and the inner endocardial layer. The outer layer is composed of the visceral pericardium consisting of cuboidal mesothelial cells, beneath which numerous …

Bee honey possess various nutritional and medicinal functions, which are the result of its diverse chemical composition. The numerous bioactive compounds in honey come from flower nectar
Effects of tributyltin(IV) chloride exposure on early embryonic stages ofCiona intestinalis:In vivo and ultrastructural investigations
1993
The effects of tributyltin(IV) chloride (TBT chloride) solutions on ascidian embryos of Ciona intestinalis have been tested at different stages of development. It has been observed, in vivo, that TBT chooride inhibited cleavage of fertilized eggs and of embryo blastomeres giving rise to cellular masses that are not delimited by plasma membrane. Electron-dense precipitates of TBT chloride, probably as inorganic tin, have been observed by transmission electron microscopy in the egg cytoplasm of cellular masses. The same type of precipitate was present also inside the mitochondria, whose structure appeared to be highly modified. These ultrastructure aspects are indicative of a degenerative pro…
Actinic cheilitis: Proposal of a clinical index.
2021
Actinic cheilitis is a potentially malignant lesion most commonly found in the lower lip of individuals with chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The aim of this study was to develop and to test a clinical index that can be used to assess the severity of actinic cheilitis. The clinical index of actinic cheilitis was applied to 36 patients. An incisional biopsy was obtained to grade oral epithelial dysplasias following the World Health Organization (WHO) and binary systems, and to evaluate their association with clinical characteristics by Fisher?s exact test (P<0.05). The accuracy of the index was evaluated based on sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, an…
Abdominālo tauku relatīvās masas noteikšanas trīs neatkarīgu metožu rezultātu salīdzinošs izvērtējums
2015
Stress Echocardiography and Strain in Aortic Regurgitation (SESAR protocol): Left ventricular contractile reserve and myocardial work in asymptomatic…
2020
Objectives: To analyze left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation and contractile reserve (CR) in asymptomatic patients with severe aortic regurgitation (AR) at rest and during exercise, and their correlation with functional capacity. Background: The natural history of chronic AR is characterized by a prolonged silent phase before onset of symptoms and overt LV dysfunction. Assessment of LV systolic function and contractile reserve has an important role in the decision-making of AR asymptomatic patients. Methods: Standard echo, lung ultrasound, and LV 2D speckle tracking strain were performed at rest and during exercise in asymptomatic patients with severe AR and in age- and sex-comparabl…
Accuracy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in adult patients: review of the literature
2013
Background Ultrasound is a widely used technique in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis; nevertheless, its utilization still remains controversial. Methods The accuracy of the Ultrasound technique in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in the adult patient, as shown in the literature, was searched for. Results The gold standard for the diagnosis of appendicitis still remains pathologic confirmation after appendectomy. In the published literature, graded-compression Ultrasound has shown an extremely variable diagnostic accuracy in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (sensitivity range from 44% to 100%; specificity range from 47% to 99% ). This is due to many reasons, including lack of operat…
