Ultrafast optics in coherently spinning molecules
2020
This thesis reports on the study of unidirectional rotation of molecules and focuses on the rotational Doppler effect occuring in the course of third-harmonic generation in coherently spinning molecules. The rotational Doppler effect appears when a circularly polarized wave interacts with an anisotropic rotating object. During the interaction, an exchange of angular momentum and energy between the field and the object occurs, leading to a frequency shift of the wave. In this work, the frequency shift of the third-harmonic generated in unidirectionaly rotating molecules has been observed. An anlytical model developped in the mansucript forsees four kinds of frequency shifts depending on the m…
Coherent master equation for laser modelocking
2020
Modelocked lasers constitute the fundamental source of optically-coherent ultrashort-pulsed radiation, with huge impact in science and technology. Their modeling largely rests on the master equation (ME) approach introduced in 1975 by Hermann A. Haus. However, that description fails when the medium dynamics is fast and, ultimately, when light-matter quantum coherence is relevant. Here we set a rigorous and general ME framework, the coherent ME (CME), that overcomes both limitations. The CME predicts strong deviations from Haus ME, which we substantiate through an amplitude-modulated semiconductor laser experiment. Accounting for coherent effects, like the Risken-Nummedal-Graham-Haken multim…

Wideband THz time domain spectroscopy set-up based on ultrafast pulsed laser: model and experiments
2014
We present an analytical model describing the full electromagnetic propagation in a THz Time Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) laser based system. We pay particular attention to the modelling of the time-frequency behavior of all the stages, which compose our experimental set-up. In particular, our model takes into account the following features: pump beam focusing into the generation crystal; phase-matching between pump and THz pulses inside both the generation and detection crystals; chromatic dispersion and absorption inside the materials; Fabry-Perot effect in both the crystals; diffraction along the propagation, focalization and overlapping between THz and probe beams; Electro-Optic Sampli…
Asymptotic properties of incoherent waves propagating in an all-optical regenerators line
2007
International audience; We present an original method to generate optical pulse trains with random time-interval values from incoherent broadband sources. More precisely, our technique relies on the remarkable properties of a line made of cascaded self-phase modulation-based optical regenerators. Depending on the regenerator parameters, various regimes with noticeably different physical behaviors can be reported.
Arbitrary Phase Access for Stable Fiber Interferometers
2021
Well-controlled yet practical systems that give access to interference effects are critical for established and new functionalities in ultrafast signal processing, quantum photonics, optical coherence characterization, etc. Optical fiber systems constitute a central platform for such technologies. However, harnessing optical interference in a versatile and stable manner remains technologically costly and challenging. Here, degrees of freedom native to optical fibers, i.e., polarization and frequency, are used to demonstrate an easily deployable technique for the retrieval and stabilization of the relative phase in fiber interferometric systems. The scheme gives access (without intricate dev…
The origin of slow electron recombination processes in dye-sensitized solar cells with alumina barrier coatings
2004
We investigate the effect of a thin alumina coating of nanocrystalline TiO2 films on recombination dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells. Both coated and uncoated cells were measured by a combination of techniques: transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and open-circuit voltage decay. It is found that the alumina barrier reduces the recombination of photoinjected electrons to both dye cations and the oxidized redox couple. It is proposed that this observed retardation can be attributed primarily to two effects: almost complete passivation of surface trap states in TiO2 that are able to inject electrons to acceptor species, and slowing down by a factor of…
ULTRA-BROADBAND COHERENT DETECTION OF TERAHERTZ PULSES VIA CMOS-COMPATIBLE SOLID-STATE DEVICES
The dynamics of a developing CW supercontinuum: Analytical predictions and experiments
2010
International audience; We show that the development of the supercontinuum spectrum in the quasi-CW regime can be interpreted analytically in terms of Akhmediev Breathers. Theory and experiment are in excellent agreement.
Do fluorescence and transient absorption probe the same intramolecular charge transfer state of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile?
2009
International audience; We present here the results of time-resolved absorption and emission experiments for 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile in solution, which suggest that the fluorescent intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state may differ from the twisted ICT (TICT) state observed in transient absorption.
