Pleurotus eryngii var. thapsiae var. nov. from Sicily

Field investigation in the Sicilian territory allowed the study of Pleurotus eryngii basidiomata growing in association with Thapsia garganica. The evaluation of morphological, ecological, distribution and isozyme, and PCR-RAPD data together with a revision of Bresadola's herbarium specimens kept in the Herbarium Botanische Staatssamlung (M) led to the description of a new variety, Pleurotus eryngii var. tahpsiae var. nov.

Viruses constitute a major threat to large-scale production of crops worldwide producing important economical losses and undermining sustainability. We evaluated a new plant variety for resistance and tolerance to a specific virus through a comparison with other well-known varieties. The study is based on two independent Bayesian accelerated failure time models which assess resistance and tolerance survival times. Establishing a soil loss threshold for limiting rilling

In this paper a frequency analysis of event soil loss measurements collected in the period 1999–2012 at the microplots and plots of the Sparacia Experimental Area in Sicily, southern Italy, was developed. The analysis was carried out using the annual maximum soil loss measurements normalized by the mean soil loss measured at a given temporal and spatial scale. The empirical frequency distribution of the normalized variable was well fitted by two Gumbel’s theoretical probability distributions discriminated by a value of the normalized variable equal to 2. A fluorogenic assay for the specific detection of Escherichia coli on the basis of its β-glucuronidase activity (MUG method) was applied to seawater and marine sediments with different contamination levels. Two new sesquiterpene derivatives from the Tunisian endemic Ferula tunetana Pom.

A new sesquiterpene ester, tunetanin A (1), a new sesquiterpene coumarin, tunetacoumarin A (2), together with eight known compounds, i.e., coladin (3), coladonin (4), isosmarcandin (5), 13-hydroxyfeselol (6), umbelliprenin (7) propiophenone (8), beta-sitosterol (9), and stigmasterol (10), were isolated from the roots of Ferula tunetana. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and MS analysis, as well as by comparison with published data. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1-7 towards two human colon cancer cell lines, HT-29 and HCT 116, was evaluated. Compounds 3, 4, and 6 showed weak cytotoxic activities.

Comparison of the metabolism of 7-ethoxycoumarin and coumarin in precision-cut rat liver and lung slices

The metabolism of 7-ethoxycoumarin and [3-(14)C]coumarin was compared in precision-cut rat liver and lung slices. The lung slices were prepared using an agarose gel instilling technique enabling the production of tissue cylinders followed by lung slices employing a Krumdieck tissue slicer. Both 50 microM 7-ethoxycoumarin and 50 microM [3-(14)C]coumarin were metabolized by rat liver and lung slices. 7-Ethoxycoumarin was converted to 7-hydroxycoumarin (7-HC) which was conjugated with both D-glucuronic acid and sulfate. 7-HC sulfate was the major metabolite formed by both liver and lung slices. Strength distribution in paper

Abstract Tensile strength distributions are studied in four paper samples that exhibit a variety of brittle-to-ductile properties. 1005 tensile specimens were measured in each case. The standard Gumbel and Weibull distributions, and a recently proposed double exponential modification of the former are compared with the observations visually and using chi-squared and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests. The Gumbel distribution fails to fit the data while the Weibull distribution gives satisfactory agreement. However, the double exponential distribution fits the data best, regardless of the ductility of the material.

Secondary metabolites from polar fractions of Piper umbellatum.

Seven known secondary metabolites were isolated from the methanol extract of the branches of Piper umbellatum. The identification of these compounds was mainly achieved by 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and FAB-MS. Among them, the known cepharadiones A and B can be considered as chemotaxonomic markers of the genus Piper.
