The purpose of this paper is to investigate about a new notion of finite state recognizability for two-dimensional (picture) languages. This notion takes as starting point the characterization of one-dimensional recognizable languages in terms of local languages and projections. Such notion can be extended in a natural way to the two-dimensional case. AbstractMany problems in formal verification and program analysis can be formalized as computing winning strategies for two-player games on graphs. In this paper, we focus on solving games in recursive game graphs which can model the control flow in sequential programs with recursive procedure calls. Unambiguous recognizable two-dimensional languages

We consider the family UREC of unambiguous recognizable two-dimensional languages. We prove that there are recognizable languages that are inherently ambiguous, that is UREC family is a proper subclass of REC family. The result is obtained by showing a necessary condition for unambiguous recognizable languages. Further UREC family coincides with the class of picture languages defined by unambiguous 2OTA and it strictly contains its deterministic counterpart. Some closure and non-closure properties of UREC are presented. Finally we show that it is undecidable whether a given tiling system is unambiguous.
Querying the Guarded Fragment with Transitivity

We study the problem of answering a union of Boolean conjunctive queries q against a database Δ, and a logical theory φ which falls in the guarded fragment with transitive guards (GF + TG). We trace the frontier between decidability and undecidability of the problem under consideration. Surprisingly, we show that query answering under GF2 + TG, i.e., the two-variable fragment of GF + TG, is already undecidable (even without equality), whereas its monadic fragment is decidable; in fact, it is 2exptime-complete in combined complexity and coNP-complete in data complexity. We also show that for a restricted class of queries, query answering under GF+TG is decidable. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
Decidability of bisimulation equivalences for parallel timer processes

In this paper an abstract model of parallel timer processes (PTPs), allowing specification of temporal quantitative constraints on the behaviour of real time systems, is introduced. The parallel timer processes are defined in a dense time domain and are able to model both concurrent (with delay intervals overlapping on the time axis) and infinite behaviour. Both the strong and weak (abstracted from internal actions) bisimulation equivalence problems for PTPs are proved decidable. Logics with counting and equivalence

We consider the two-variable fragment of first-order logic with counting, subject to the stipulation that a single distinguished binary predicate be interpreted as an equivalence. We show that the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problems for this logic are both NEXPTIME-complete. We further show that the corresponding problems for two-variable first-order logic with counting and two equivalences are both undecidable.
Counting in the Two Variable Guarded Logic with Transitivity

We show that the extension of the two-variable guarded fragment with transitive guards (GF+TG) by functionality statements is undecidable. This gives immediately undecidability of the extension of GF+TG by counting quantifiers. The result is optimal, since both the three-variable fragment of the guarded fragment with counting quantifiers and the two-variable guarded fragment with transitivity are undecidable. We also show that the extension of GF+TG with functionality, where functional predicate letters appear in guards only, is decidable and of the same complexity as GF+TG. This fragment captures many expressive modal and description logics.

We consider the quantifier-free languages, Bc and Bc °, obtained by augmenting the signature of Boolean algebras with a unary predicate representing, respectively, the property of being connected, and the property of having a connected interior. These languages are interpreted over the regular closed sets of R n ( n ≥ 2) and, additionally, over the regular closed semilinear sets of R n . The resulting logics are examples of formalisms that have recently been proposed in the Artificial Intelligence literature under the rubric Qualitative Spatial Reasoning. Abstract The fluted fragment is a fragment of first-order logic (without equality) in which, roughly speaking, the order of quantification of variables coincides with the order in which those variables appear as arguments of predicates. It is known that this fragment has the finite model property. We consider extensions of the fluted fragment with various numbers of transitive relations, as well as the equality predicate. Games on recursive game graphs can be used to reason about the control flow of sequential programs with recursion. In games over recursive game graphs, the most natural notion of strategy is the modular strategy, i.e., a strategy that is local to a module and is oblivious to previous module invocations, and thus does not depend on the context of invocation. In this work, we study for the first time modular strategies with respect to winning conditions that can be expressed by a pushdown automaton.
