Presence of mycotoxins in sorghum and intake estimation in Tunisia
2014
Sorghum samples (n = 60) from Tunisian markets were analysed for the occurrence of 22 of both traditional and emerging mycotoxins. Samples were extracted with a QuEChERS-like method and mycotoxins were detected by LC-MS/MS. This method was validated and adequate analytical parameters were obtained. All samples had contamination with mycotoxins and several samples had higher contamination levels than European Union legislative limits (MLs). The most frequently found mycotoxins were ENB (100%), OTA (98%), ENA₁ (63%), ENB₁ (56%), BEA (48%), AFB1 (38%) and STG (33%). Mean contaminations were 30.7, 1.93, 33.2, 51.0, 15.4, 1.49 and 20.5 µg kg(-1), respectively. While two samples were contaminated…
Psychological intimate partner violence against women in the European Union: a cross-national invariance study
2019
Abstract Background Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a worldwide public health problem. One of the most frequent forms of this type of violence in western societies is psychological IPVAW. According to the European Union (EU) Fundamental Rights Association (FRA) the prevalence of psychological IPVAW in the EU is 43%. However, the measurement invariance of the measure addressing psychological IPVAW in this survey has not yet been assessed. Methods The aim of this study is to ensure the cross-national comparability of this measure, by evaluating its measurement invariance across the 28 EU countries in a sample of 37,724 women, and to examine how the levels of this type of vi…
A European Study of the Performance and Safety of MINIject in Patients With Medically Uncontrolled Open-angle Glaucoma (STAR-II)
2020
Precis In this European study (STAR-II), MINIject, a novel, ab-interno, supraciliary MIGS device, effectively lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for IOP-lowering medications in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Purpose To evaluate the safety and performance of a minimally invasive supraciliary glaucoma drainage device (MINIject DO627, iSTAR Medical SA, Wavre, Belgium) for surgical treatment of primary open angle glaucoma in patients refractory to topical hypotensive medications. Methods In a prospective, interventional, single-arm, multi-center, European study (STAR-II), MINIject was successfully implanted in a standalone procedure in 29 of 31 patients in 8 sites in 3 …
Risk of thromboembolism with thrombopoietin receptor agonists in adult patients with thrombocytopenia: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomi…
2012
Background and objective: Thrombopoietin receptor (TPOr) agonists (romiplostim and eltrombopag) are a new approach for the treatment of thrombocytopenia-associated conditions. They promote megakaryocyte differentiation, proliferation and platelet production. In the European Union, both are orphan drugs with an indication restricted to splenectomized immune thrombocytopenic purpura patients who are refractory to other treatments. Due to increasing platelet counts, these drugs may represent a risk for thromboembolic complications. We analyzed whether TPOr agonists affect thromboembolisms occurrence in adult thrombocytopenic patients. Materials and methods: We conducted a systematic review and…
CT exposure in adult and paediatric patients: a review of the mechanisms of damage, relative dose and consequent possible risks.
2014
An increase has been observed not only in the absolute number of CT examinations but also in the length of coverage and number of scanning phases, with the result that exposure to ionising radiation from CT is becoming an increasingly serious problem. The extent of the problem is not entirely known and cannot be adequately addressed without proper knowledge of all the phases that leads to the effective dose calculation. In light of the growing awareness of the issue of ionising radiation dose and the possible risk for the individual and the population, there is a need for radiologists, medical physicists and radiographers to play an active role in dose management. In this review, the author…
Limited survey for the presence of aflatoxins in foods from local markets and supermarkets in Valencia, Spain.
2004
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), B2 (AFB2), G1 (AFG1) and G2 (AFG2) were extracted by matrix solid-phase dispersion with C18 silica and acetonitrile as the eluting solvent, analysed by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and confirmed by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry using an electrospray interface in 58 samples grouped as cereals, dried fruits, herbs and spices, pulses, snacks, and nuts and nut products collected from local markets and supermarkets in Valencia, Spain. All samples analysed by the proposed method were previously studied with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay as a screening protocol for the fast detection of mycotoxins. The samples containing residues (3/5…
Occurrence of aflatoxins in feedstuff, sheep milk and dairy products in Western Sicily
2003
Samples of feedstuffs (15), milk (40), and cheese (30) coming from sheep and dairy farms (23) or market in WesternSicily were analyzed for their respective content of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and M1 (AFM1) to evidence any possible indirectmycotoxin contamination risk to the consumer. Analyses using HPLC and fluorescence detection were performed afterimmunoaffinity column sample extraction and cleanup; AFM1 was detected in 30% of the milk samples at levels rangingfrom 4 to 23 ng/l and in 13% of the cheeses from 21 to 101 ng/kg; in the feed the AFB1 ranged from None of the contaminated samples exceeded the legal limits set down by the European Union for milk (50 ng/l) and feed(5 μg/kg ), or tha…
Unione africana e Nazioni Unite: coordinamento o subordinazione nella gestione delle crisi?
2019
The present chapter deals with the relationship between the United Nations and the African Union in the field of international peace and security. The shifting from the Organization for African Unity to the African Union and the establishment of the Peace and Security Council are the answers of African States to the failure of the United Nations to manage the several crisis scenarios in Africa since the early ’90s. If one considers, in fact, the practice of the Union, as regards enforcement actions, the lack of financial resources is the major obstacle to peace and security in Africa. Consequently, the AU Constitutive Act norms which seem to provide for a unilateral right to intervene of th…
Al Gathafi speaks... : Afrikan yhtenäisyys ja pan-afrikanismi Muammar Gaddafin retoriikassa
2008
Tutki…
Simulating the evolution of stakes on Réunion Island in a context of coastal risk
2017
This paper describes a model and a simulation tool which aim at help decision-makers and planners dealing with their processes for territorial prospective analysis. It is based on a practical study case, located on Réunion Island (France). This study has been carried out within the VULNERARE research program, granted by Foundation de France: one of VULNERARE aims is to estimate and assess Réunion's vulnerability in the next 30 years, in relation to coastal risk. This paper is specifically focussing on the dynamics and the future state of two important stakes: population and urban structures. Will urban development of littoral zones increase? How fast and which type of population will be exp…
