A thermodynamic approach to nonlocal plasticity and related variational principles

1999

Elastic-plastic rate-independent materials with isotropic hardening/softening of nonlocal nature are considered in the context of small displacements and strains. A suitable thermodynamic framework is envisaged as a basis of a nonlocal associative plasticity theory in which the plastic yielding laws comply with a (nonlocal) maximum intrinsic dissipation theorem. Additionally, the rate response problem for a (continuous) set of (macroscopic) material particles, subjected to a given total strain rate field, is discussed and shown to be characterized by a minimum principle in terms of plastic coefficient. This coefficient and the relevant continuum tangent stiffness matrix are shown to admit, …

A General Approach on Picard Operators

2021

In the chapter there are presented the recent investigations concerning the existence and the uniqueness of fixed points for the mappings in the setting of spaces which are not metric with different functions of measuring the distance and in consequence with the various convergence concepts. In this way we obtain the systematized knowledge of fixed point tools which are, in some situations, more convenient to apply than the known theorems with an underlying usual metric space. The appropriate illustrative examples are also presented.

Strong solutions to a parabolic equation with linear growth with respect to the gradient variable

2018

Abstract In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the homogeneous Neumann problem associated to a parabolic equation with linear growth with respect to the gradient variable. This equation is a generalization of the time-dependent minimal surface equation. Existence and regularity in time of the solution is proved by means of a suitable pseudoparabolic relaxed approximation of the equation and a passage to the limit.

Influence Functions and Efficiencies of k-Step Hettmansperger–Randles Estimators for Multivariate Location and Regression

2016

In Hettmansperger and Randles (Biometrika 89:851–860, 2002) spatial sign vectors were used to derive simultaneous estimators of multivariate location and shape. Oja (Multivariate nonparametric methods with R. Springer, New York, 2010) proposed a similar approach for the multivariate linear regression case. These estimators are highly robust and have under general assumptions a joint limiting multinormal distribution. The estimates are easy to compute using fixed-point algorithms. There are however no exact proofs for the convergence of these algorithms. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions also still remain unproven although we believe that they hold under general conditions. To ci…

Local and nonlocal weighted pLaplacian evolution equations with Neumann boundary conditions

2011

In this paper we study existence and uniqueness of solutions to the local diffusion equation with Neumann boundary conditions and a bounded nonhomogeneous diffusion coefficient g ≥ 0, {ut = div (g|∇u|p-2∇u) in ]0; T[×Ωg|∇u|p-2u·n = 0 on ]0; T[×∂Ω; for 1 ≤ p < ∞. We show that a nonlocal counterpart of this diffusion problem is ut(t; x)= ∫ω J(x-y)g(x+y/2)|u(t; y)-u(t; x)| p-2 (u(t; y)-u(t; x)) dy in ]0; T[× Ω,where the diffusion coefficient has been reinterpreted by means of the values of g at the point x+y/2 in the integral operator. The fact that g ≥ 0 is allowed to vanish in a set of positive measure involves subtle difficulties, specially in the case p = 1.

A nonlocal p-Laplacian evolution equation with Neumann boundary conditions

2008

In this paper we study the nonlocal p-Laplacian type diffusion equation,ut (t, x) = under(∫, Ω) J (x - y) | u (t, y) - u (t, x) |p - 2 (u (t, y) - u (t, x)) d y . If p > 1, this is the nonlocal analogous problem to the well-known local p-Laplacian evolution equation ut = div (| ∇ u |p - 2 ∇ u) with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We prove existence and uniqueness of a strong solution, and if the kernel J is rescaled in an appropriate way, we show that the solutions to the corresponding nonlocal problems converge strongly in L∞ (0, T ; Lp (Ω)) to the solution of the p-Laplacian with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The extreme case p = 1, that is, the nonlocal analogous t…

Existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions of implicitly linear homogeneous Volterra integral equations

2011

We analyze collocation methods for nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity. We present different kinds of existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions and we give conditions for such existence and uniqueness in some cases. Finally we illustrate these methods with an example of a collocation problem, and we give some examples of collocation problems that do not fit in the cases studied previously.

Random attractors for stochastic lattice systems with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity

2011

In this article, we study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of a first-order stochastic lattice dynamical system with an additive noise. We do not assume any Lipschitz condition on the nonlinear term, just a continuity assumption together with growth and dissipative conditions so that uniqueness of the Cauchy problem fails to be true. Using the theory of multi-valued random dynamical systems, we prove the existence of a random compact global attractor.

Global existence and uniqueness result for the diffusive Peterlin viscoelastic model

2015

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the existence and uniqueness result for the diffusive Peterlin viscoelastic model describing the unsteady behaviour of some incompressible polymeric fluids. The polymers are treated as two beads connected by a nonlinear spring. The Peterlin approximation of the spring force is used to derive the equation for the conformation tensor. The latter is the time evolution equation with spatial diffusion of the conformation tensor. Using the energy estimates we prove global in time existence of a weak solution in two space dimensions. We are also able to show the regularity and consequently the uniqueness of the weak solution.
