Family Needs and Female Work: A Comparative Survey of Public Policies and Private Choices on Equal Opportunities
2015
Abstract Recent studies show that Italian women’s education and skills are high and that they have access to the job market, but, at the same time, there are many difficulties in maintaining a job in certain periods of their lives. Exactly, the critic period is connected to the choice of having children or a “traditional family” and, in general, with family duties. To explain the different percentage of women participation to job market in different countries, recent studies have looked to peculiar institutional structure of “municipal” job market and to social support services. The public offer of childcare and family support explains lots of the differences among different countries, but …
Immunological priming in the wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis)
2014
Between the old and the new : the impact of communal traditional values and practices on the cultural identity of young and old Basotho
2017
Lesotho, in Southern Africa, has long been neglected in communication research. To address this void, the present study investigates what traditional values and traditional rituals exist in today’s Lesotho, how important these are respectively to the young and old generation of Basotho, and how traditional values and practices help the formation of cultural identities of old and young people of Lesotho. The theory behind this study was cultural identity theory by Collier and Thomas (1988), a theory which had mostly been used in the context of ethnic minority research. To expand the use of this theory, through 18 qualitative interviews of both older and younger Basotho, this study found resp…
Topogrāfisko karšu pārveide uz 3D modeli un to izmantošana
2020
Feces production as a form of social immunity in an insect with facultative maternal care
2015
Background Social animals have the unique capability of mounting social defenses against pathogens. Over the last decades, social immunity has been extensively studied in species with obligatory and permanent forms of social life. However, its occurrence in less derived social systems and thus its role in the early evolution of group-living remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether lining nests with feces is a form of social immunity against microbial growth in the European earwig Forficula auricularia, an insect with temporary family life and facultative maternal care. Results Using a total of 415 inhibition zone assays, we showed that earwig feces inhibit the growth of two GRAM+ bact…
Light and Primary Production Shape Bacterial Activity and Community Composition of Aerobic Anoxygenic Phototrophic Bacteria in a Microcosm Experiment
2020
ABSTRACT Phytoplankton is a key component of aquatic microbial communities, and metabolic coupling between phytoplankton and bacteria determines the fate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Yet, the impact of primary production on bacterial activity and community composition remains largely unknown, as, for example, in the case of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria that utilize both phytoplankton-derived DOC and light as energy sources. Here, we studied how reduction of primary production in a natural freshwater community affects the bacterial community composition and its activity, focusing primarily on AAP bacteria. The bacterial respiration rate was the lowest when photosynthe…
Influence of Nutrients and Mixing on the Primary Production and Community Respiration in the Gulf of Riga
1999
Abstract Rates of plankton community production and respiration in relation to wind, solar radiation, biomass and nutrients were measured in the mixed layer during a late spring, a mid-summer and an early autumn situation in the Gulf of Riga. System metabolism was estimated by the in vitro oxygen method and from oxygen mass balance directly in the water. Gross production (GPP) remained fairly stable throughout the investigation periods with a mean of 1.8 g C m−2 day−1 (range: 0.5–3.9 g C m−2 day−1). Community respiration varied from 0.5 to 6.4 g C m−2 day−1 during the two summer studies (the high respiration rates ranging from 3.0 to 10.4 g C m−2 day−1 found during the autumn cruise were pr…
CSCL – a tool to motivate foreign language learners: The Finnish application
2003
This article discusses the applications of the theory of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) to teaching and learning a foreign language, in this case, one of the ‘Less Commonly Taught Languages’, Finnish. The ‘Virtually Finnish’ project was based on the idea of creating a larger, virtual Finnish learning community among the second-year Finnish language students in five US universities during the fall semester, 2001. CSCL was chosen as a base, as its principal goal is to aid the learners in sharing and distributing their knowledge to the whole learning community. In addition to discussing the set up and the content of the project, the students’ feedback about their language lea…
