Unwanted effects: Is there a negative side of meditation? A multicentre survey
2017
Objectives Despite the long-term use and evidence-based efficacy of meditation and mindfulness-based interventions, there is still a lack of data about the possible unwanted effects (UEs) of these practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of UEs among meditation practitioners, considering moderating factors such as the type, frequency, and lifetime duration of the meditation practices. Methods An online survey was developed and disseminated through several websites, such as Spanish-, English- and Portuguese-language scientific research portals related to mindfulness and meditation. After excluding people who did not answer the survey correctly or completely and those w…
Employability and Finnish University Graduates
2010
In this article the authors concentrate on the change in the concept of employability during the Bologna process. They show that employability has gradually moved from a peripheral to a core presence in the most recent Bologna process documents. Using a Finnish university merger (University of Eastern Finland) as an example, the authors demonstrate that implementation of the Bologna process has reached the most remote eastern border of the European Union. The Bologna process is shaping the Finnish universities, and employability discussion is embedded in university reforms. The authors argue that the reason why employability has been raised as one of the core concepts of the Bologna proces…
Approaches to Transition Support for First Year Students in Higher Education
2012
The growing numbers and diversity of the student population challenge the study and learning environments in higher education institutions. In this chapter, students’ transition from secondary to higher education was examined by analyzing practices of support offered to first year students in order to promote retention, smooth progress, and success in their studies. We classified the practices supporting students starting their university education on the basis of the main contents of the programs, using four categories: (1) introduction and orientation, (2) enhancing a sense of belonging, (3) developing academic skills, and (4) pedagogical arrangements. These approaches to support were ana…
The role of career values for work engagement during the transition to working life
2013
Abstract The present longitudinal study examined the role of career values for work engagement across the transition from university education to working life. Finnish young adults reported on their career values (intrinsic, rewards, and security values) at the age of 23; and the degree of person–organization fit (value congruence, and congruence between one's education and the job), subjective income and economic stress two years later at the age of 25. Work engagement was assessed at both measurement points. Structural equation modeling results showed, first, that intrinsic but not rewards or security career values were related to work engagement. Second, value congruence and having a job…
BUILDING THE POM CURRICULUM FOR A PRIVATIZING ECONOMY: AN EVALUATION FROM MANUFACTURERS‘ PERSPECTIVES
2009
Manufacturing in Eastern European countries is in transition to open-market competition. One transitional issue is university education for operations managers from the perspective of business practitioners. Survey responses by 203 manufacturing professionals from 83 companies provide recommendations for operations management education at the University of Sibiu in Romania. The recommendations substantially reorient curricula that traditionally prepared students for professions in centrally controlled economies rather than for open-market competition. The redesigned curriculum has an educational advantage in its integration of production, marketing, and engineering, all under one college of…

Institutional transformation to reduce the gender gap in STEM
2018
Despite the considerable efforts made in recent decades in order to reduce the gender gap as regards the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), great inequalities stills persist. In different situations, socioeconomic, cultural and other barriers continue to prevent the students complete or fully benefit from the quality education they have chosen (UNESCO, 2017). The new UNESCO publication entitled Cracking the code: girls' and women's education in STEM, presented at the International Symposium and Policy Forum UNESCO, on this subject, specifically what factors hinder or facilitate the participation of girls and women in education linked to STEM (Education 2030…

Erozja uniwersyteckiego nomosu jako czynnik zmiany porządku normatywnego
2018
University education is stereotypically associated with the internalization of a set of cultural norms – rules of behavior, folkways, mores, etc. All these norms and rules constitute the university nomos that erodes deeply in recent times, especially in the social sciences fields of study. This erosion consists of phenomena and processes of anomic character. Their reasons lie in a broader social, cultural and political context in which the contemporary university works. And these anomic phenomena and processes impact secondarily on different spheres of social life – because of mass access to the studies and mass supply of graduates – in effect increasing anomie in society as a whole. In the…
