The impact of noise on the population of an urban centre in Valencia (Spain)
1997
Acoustic contamination in residential areas is a generalized problem. This paper reports the results of a survey trying to evaluate this contamination in the historical center of Valencia and about its effects upon that district's residents. A total of 700 residents in 11 different neighbourhoods of the city of Valencia were interviewed; at the same time environmental noise was determined at 225 different points within the area of study. In the historical center of Valencia, there exists an important problem of environmental noise and the daily levels clearly exceed the recommended limits.
The Fluid City Experience: An Update
2016
This chapter describes the actual status of thirteen European cities that become fluid cities through their strategies for urban regeneration. These cities are divided into three groups: the large port-cities, the medium rank “city-port” cities, the riverfront cities. For every city, we define the status of urban environment and population, the trend for port and airport traffic and the strategies for urban regeneration.
In Defense of Cities : On Negative Presentation of Urban Areas in Environmental Preference Studies
2019
This paper critiques a common research method, image-based studies, in assessing environmental preferences. The method is used, in particular, in the fields of environmental psychology, landscape studies, and health studies, here called empirical environmental preference studies or EEP studies. I argue that the established view in the EEP field that nature is inherently experienced as more aesthetically appealing and restorative than urban environments may be biased because of the image-based method. This paper presents a literature review of EEP studies, discussing them in a framework of environmental and everyday aesthetics. The conclusion is that EEP studies may strip cities of their phy…
Genetic Diversity of White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) from the Urban Area of Rīga Baltā Āboliņa (Trifolium Repens L.) Ģenētiskā Daudzveidība Rīgas …
2015
The Impact of Green Roofs on the Parameters of the Environment in Urban Areas—Review
2019
This study presents the results of a review of publications conducted by researchers in a variety of climates on the implementation of ‘green roofs’ and their impact on the urban environment. Features of green roofs in urban areas have been characterized by a particular emphasis on: Filtration of air pollutants and oxygen production, reduction of rainwater volume discharged from roof surfaces, reduction of so-called ‘urban heat islands’, as well as improvements to roof surface insulation (including noise reduction properties). The review of the publications confirmed the necessity to conduct research to determine the coefficients of the impact of green roofs on the environment in the city c…
2014
The aim of this paper is to study the sidewalk as a communications medium, especially in the urban environment. To do so, we collected a corpus of a thousand institutional, businessrelated or personal messages from the sidewalk. This corpus comprises slogans, advertisements, protests, affectionate statements, congratulations... From among all these sidewalk writings, first we collected and examined messages targeting citizens in general, and then focused on birthday greetings in particular because they were more numerous and also because they reflect social transformations.
Exploring alternate traffic circulation effects in Île-de-France Region using aggregated mobile phone data: is it still useful to use mobile phone da…
2016
International audience; During the last decade, the usefulness of passive mobile phone data for the study of urban mobility have been investigated by different research communities. Mobile phone data have many advantages, among them, a passive collection process and the availability of mobility data during a continuing period. However, at the moment in European Union due to an increasing concern in privacy issues, these data are aggregated per hour and antenna. We assume that this kind of data, despite their aggregation level, have still a large utility in studying urban mobility. To answer this issue we use a 12 months mobile phone dataset from the french mobile operator Orange. We will expl…
Palermo habitat multi-specie.
A Dynamic Analysis of Tourism Determinants in Sicily
2015
This study provides an initial analysis of the key determinants of tourism in Sicily. In doing so, it responds to the general lack of a scientific approach in the study and management of tourism in Sicily. By mixing a gravity approach and system dynamics methodology, the attractiveness of Sicily is examined, taking into account both structural and promotional aspects that might affect tourism demand. The results strongly suggest that the island's natural and cultural resources, the road infrastructure and the urban environment are important determinants of tourism demand in Sicily. The findings may be useful for local authorities involved in the development of tourism, and represent a star…
