Fog Computing based traffic Safety for Connected Vulnerable Road Users

2019

Annually, millions of people die and many more sustain non-fatal injuries because of road traffic crashes. Despite multitude of countermeasures, the number of causalities and disabilities owing to traffic accidents are increasing each year causing grinding social, economic, and health problems. Due to their high volume and lack of protective-shells, more than half of road traffic deaths are imputed to vulnerable road users (VRUs): pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Mobile devices combined with fog computing can provide feasible solutions to protect VRUs by predicting collusions and warning users of an imminent traffic accident. Mobile devices’ ubiquity and high computational capabilit…

A device for spike train sampling with built-in memory.

1987

Abstract The described interface to a digital computer measures interspike interval durations with a resolution of 10 μs. A built-in first-in first-out (FIFO) memory relieves the host computer from frequent I/O intensive tasks. The internal FIFO buffer can store up to 512 data words (wordlength is 16 bit) and works on the dual-port principle. This way the acquisition of a neuronal spike train is completely independent of the computer's simultaneously ongoing data access. A simple handshake protocol between the interface and the computer prevents any overhead communication. The buffer architecture of the instrument releases the host computer from high speed I/O handling schemes like real-tim…

A Web Application for Interactive Visualization of European Basketball Data

2020

The statistical analysis of basketball games is a fast-growing field. Certainly, basketball data are scientifically relevant because an appropriate analysis provides a great deal of information about the performance of both players and teams. The number of games played each season generates a large amount of data worth analyzing. Basketball analytics is well established in U.S. leagues. In Europe, however, it has not been duly developed. This study focuses on the top three European team competitions: the EuroLeague, the EuroCup, and the Spanish ACB (Association of Basketball Clubs, acronym in Spanish) league. Their official websites provide access to game data for anyone who is interested, …

Design and Implementation of an Electronic Control Unit for a CFR Bi-Fuel Spark Ignition Engine

2017

In this work an Electronic Control Unit for the management of a CFR engine will be described. The engine, which is used both for fuel octane rating (both in terms of RON and MON) and for research purpose, is equipped with a double injection system, with the aim to independently operate both with liquid and gaseous fuels. The developed ECU, hence, is able to control the injections of both kind of fuel, together with the spark ignition. Furthermore the system is also able to measure fuel’s consumption, instantaneous engine speed of rotation and air-fuel ratio, showing all the running parameters both on a local LCD display and on a PC based graphical user interface.

The role of travel motivations and social media use in consumer interactive behaviour: a uses and gratifications perspective

2020

This paper explores the influence of travel motivations and the gratification provided by social media in consumer stickiness to social media, intention to create user-generated content, and electronic word of mouth (eWOM) review adoption. The study follows a mixed-methods approach. First, a concept mapping study was undertaken to identify the main travel motivations and the gratifications provided by social media when consumers search for information on tourism destinations. A second study using structural equation modelling and SmartPLS 3.2.7 with a sample of 401 heavy users of social media showed the relationships between individual travel motivations and gratifications provided by socia…

More of the same? A study of the funding practices of The Research Council of Norway’s Programs for Mental Health in the period 1995 to 2015

2016

The objective of this paper is to examine the funding practices of The Research Council of Norway’s Programs for Mental Health during the time period from 1995 to 2015. The paper’s foci are on funded research groups and professions, main topics, and research questions. The empirical data consists of 138 project abstracts. The findings reveal a discrepancy between the national policies and funding practices during the program periods, where narrow knowledge development like biological, genetic, and neurological is given priority. Research focusing on community mental health and living conditions is rarely funded. The paper discusses decision-making practices, revealing that new research grou…

Background Self-tracking technologies are widely used in people’s daily lives and health care. Academic research on self-tracking and the quantified self has also accumulated rapidly in recent years. Surprisingly, there is a paucity of research that reviews, classifies, and synthesizes the state of the art with respect to self-tracking and the quantified self. Objective Our objective was to identify the state of the art of self-tracking and the quantified self in terms of health and well-being. Methods We have undertaken a systematic literature review on self-tracking and the quantified self in promoting health and well-being. After a rigorous literature search, followed by inclusions, exc…

Making interaction with virtual reality accessible : rendering and guiding methods for subtitles

2021

AbstractAccessibility in immersive media is a relevant research topic, still in its infancy. This article explores the appropriateness of two rendering modes (fixed-positioned and always-visible) and two guiding methods (arrows and auto-positioning) for subtitles in 360° video. All considered conditions have been implemented and integrated in an end-to-end platform (from production to consumption) for their validation and evaluation. A pilot study with end users has been conducted with the goals of determining the preferred options by users, the options that result in a higher presence, and of gathering extra valuable feedback from the end users. The obtained results reflect that, for the c…
