A P2P Architecture for Multimedia Content Retrieval

2006

The retrieval facilities of most Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are limited to queries based on unique identifiers or small sets of keywords. This approach can be highly labor-intensive and inconsistent. In this paper we investigate a scenario where a huge amount of multimedia resources are shared in a P2P network, by means of efficient content-based image and video retrieval functionalities. The challenge in such systems is to limit the number of sent messages, maximizing the usefulness of each peer contacted in the query process. We achieve this goal by the adoption of a novel algorithm for routing user queries. The proposed approach exploits compact representations of multimedia resources sh…

ViziQuer: A Tool to Explore and Query SPARQL Endpoints

2011

The presented tool uses a novel approach to explore and query a SPARQL endpoint. The tool is simple to use as a user needs only to enter an address of a SPARQL endpoint of one's interest. The tool will extract and visualize graphically the data schema of the endpoint. The user will be able to overview the data schema and use it to construct a SPARQL query according to the data schema. The tool can be downloaded from http://viziquer.lumii.lv. There is also additional information and help on how to use it in practice.

Document Word Clouds: Visualising Web Documents as Tag Clouds to Aid Users in Relevance Decisions

2009

Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο Information Retrieval systems spend a great effort on determining the significant terms in a document. When, instead, a user is looking at a document he cannot benefit from such information. He has to read the text to understand which words are important. In this paper we take a look at the idea of enhancing the perception of web documents with visualisation techniques borrowed from the tag clouds of Web 2.0. Highlighting the important words in a document by using a larger font size allows to get a quick impression of the relevant concepts in a text. As this process does not depend on a user query it can also be used for explorative search. A user study showed, th…

An Electrooculography based Human Machine Interface for wheelchair control

2019

International audience; This paper presents a novel single channel Electrooculography (EOG) based efficient Human–Machine Interface (HMI) for helping the individuals suffering from severe paralysis or motor degenerative diseases to regain mobility. In this study, we propose a robust system that generates control command using only one type of asynchronous eye activity (voluntary eye blink) to navigate the wheelchair without a need of graphical user interface. This work demonstrates a simple but robust and effective multi-level threshold strategy to generate control commands from multiple features associated with the single, double and triple voluntary eye blinks to control predefined action…

Pseudo-haptic Controls for Mid-air Finger-based Menu Interaction

2019

Virtual Reality (VR) is more accessible than ever these days. While topics like performance, motion sickness and presence are well investigated, basic topics as VR User Interfaces (UIs) for menu control are lagging far behind. A major issue is the absence of haptic feedback and naturalness, especially when considering mid-air finger-based interaction in VR, when "grabbable" controllers are not available. In this work, we present and compare the following two visual approaches to mid-air finger-based menu control in VR environments: a planar UI similar to common 2D desktop UIs, and a pseudo-haptic UI based on physical metaphors. The results show that the pseudo-haptic UI performs better in t…

Cognition in HCI : An Ongoing Story

2009

The field of human computer interaction (HCI) is deeply rooted in cognitive science. But can cognitive science still contribute to the newest developments? This article introduces the recent trends towards “embodied cognition.” Then research on image schemas and their metaphorical extensions is reviewed as an example of how understanding a special branch of embodied cognition can be useful to HCI. Special emphasis is placed on the validity of the theory and its practicability in different phases of the user interface design cycle. It is concluded that cognition can still contribute to current HCI and that the dialogue between the different schools of thought is beneficial to the field.

Augmenting CASE tools with hypertext: Desired functionality and implementation issues

1997

Information systems have become bigger and more complex as their support has expanded to cover larger business domains, communication and work. At the same time technical design options such as client/server architectures and graphical user interfaces have increased the size and complexity of applications. In addition, pressures to build better systems more quickly have motivated the use of integrated design environments, such as CASE. Several integration approaches such as process modeling, frameworks and hypertext technology have been proposed. Of these we consider the least analyzed, hypertext technology, in this paper. Because of the novelty of hypertext in CASE there are several unreso…

eHealth-Extended Care Coordination: Development of a Collaborative System for Inter-municipal Dementia Teams: A Research Project with a User-Centered…

2015

- In Norway, a health reform was recently adopted to improve continuity of care. Services that were carried out in hospitals were transferred to municipalities. Small and medium size municipalities have established inter-municipal cooperation to provide specialized services across borders. The research project eHealth-extended Care Coordination studied the inter-municipal cooperation for assessment of dementia, identifying a need for improved communication and coordination. This paper presents the development process of a collaborative information system for dementia assessment using a user-centered design approach. Mixed methods, such as observations, semi-structured interviews and questio…

Defining Interaction Design Patterns to Extract Knowledge from Big Data

2018

[EN] The Big Data domain offers valuable opportunities to gain valuable knowledge. The User Interface (UI), the place where the user interacts to extract knowledge from data, must be adapted to address the domain complexities. Designing UIs for Big Data becomes a challenge that involves identifying and designing the user-data interaction implicated in the knowledge extraction. To design such an interaction, one widely used approach is design patterns. Design Patterns describe solutions to common interaction design problems. This paper proposes a set of patterns to design UIs aimed at extracting knowledge from the Big Data systems data conceptual schemas. As a practical example, we apply the…
