Utilization of glucose and proline in the brain of adult insects

1986

Abstract The objective of this study was to ascertain if proline can be used as a substrate by insect brains. Utilization of d -[U14C]glucose and l -[U14C]proline by isolated brains from 25 different species of insects, belonging to six separate orders, was measured using a radiomicrorespirometric method. Glucose utilization is more pronounced in brains of relatively smaller and highly evolved insects than in larger and more primitive insects. Brains of Blattodea exhibit little proline utilization. 14CO2 production from labelled glucose and proline in brains of insects seems to be correlated with the metabolic rate of these organs.

Intimate partner violence in older women in Spain: prevalence, health consequences, and service utilization.

2013

The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV) in older women and to analyze its effect on women"s health and Healthcare Services utilization. Women aged 55 years and over (1,676) randomly sampled from Primary Healthcare Services around Spain were included. Lifetime IPV prevalence, types, and duration were calculated. Descriptive and multivariate procedures using logistic and multiple lineal regression models were used. Of the women studied, 29.4% experienced IPV with an average duration of 21 years. Regardless of the type of IPV experienced, abused women showed significantly poorer health and higher healthcare services utilization compar…

Observational Study of Antibiotic Usage at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital in Riga, Latvia

2018

Background and objectives: Many pediatric patients have been treated with antibiotics during their hospitalization. There is a need to improve antibiotic prescribing for pediatric patients because many of these prescriptions are inappropriate. Antibiotic consumption analysis was conducted at the Children&rsquo

Interaction between extrinsic and intrinsic online review cues: perspectives from cue utilization theory

2023

AbstractWe examine the interaction effects of linguistic style and verification of online reviews in terms of their valence on purchase intention for search and experiential products. We adopt the cue utilization framework to examine the interplay between the extrinsic cues of online reviews—content style (general versus specific), verified purchase (VP) badge (present versus absent), and valence (positive versus negative)—in two product categories—search product (tablet) and experiential product (trip package)—using an experimental design. The findings of the frequentist and Bayesian analyses show that valence supersedes other attributes’ impacts on purchase intention in both product categ…

Di-n-butyltin(IV)-catalyzed dimethyl carbonate synthesis from carbon dioxide and methanol: An in situ high pressure 119Sn{1H} NMR spectroscopic study

2011

The reactivity of five di-n-butyltin(IV) complexes, n-Bu2Sn(OR)(2) (1), n-Bu2SnO (3), [n-Bu2Sn(OR)](2)O (4), (n-Bu2SnO)(2)(CO2) (6) and (n-Bu2SnO)(6)[(n-Bu2SnOR)(2)(CO3)](2) (7) (R = CH3), with CO2, suggested as possible catalyst precursors and key-intermediates for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from carbon dioxide and methanol, has been investigated using high-pressure Sn-119{H-1} NMR (HP-NMR) spectroscopy. Four of the five precursors studied, i.e. 3, 4, 6 and 7 give rise to an identical Sn-119{H-1} NMR pattern which can be explicitly attributed to the fingerprint of the dimeric form of the 1-methoxy-3-methylcarbonatotetrabutyldistannoxane {5}(2). However, with 1, a new pair o…

Reflecting on the Tensions of Research Utilization: Understanding the Coupling of Academic and User Knowledge

2018

This paper addresses debate of how research is utilized that questions measuring ‘acts of use’ of research (patents, spin-offs, or license income). A science system is a progressive business where research builds upon diverse existing research and knowledge. The extent of research utilization is determined by the extent to which prior research can feed into research that ultimately leads to acts of use. We use the term ‘knowledge transformers’ to refer to research users that transform academic knowledge into the socio-economic domain, and define ‘usability’ of prior research as the ease with which it may contribute to research that knowledge transformers are able to absorb. We argue that to…
