Analysis of a severe pollution episode in Valencia (Spain) and its effect on ground level particulate matter

Abstract This study analyzes the atmospheric particles concentration at ground level during a severe pollution event that took place in Valencia (Spain) from 7 to 12 February 2011. The episode was related to a subtropical anticyclone system that affected the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe. The dominant anticyclone imposed an extended low gradient pressure system and a low mixing layer height in the region that caused the accumulation of pollutants over the western Mediterranean. Moreover, the stagnant conditions led to the formation of the local sea breeze, accompanied by an increase of relative humidity and the decrease of ambient temperature. The study was carried out to estimate the dietary intake of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the Region of Valencia (Spain) in order to evaluate the resultant risk. The PBDE levels in fish and seafood (a total of 206 samples) were determined. Dietary intake was estimated using results of PBDE analyses in fish and seafood marketed in the Region of Valencia over the period 2007-2012 and data of the first Valencian Food Consumption Survey, conducted in 2010. El objetivo de este estudio es conocer cuáles son los patrones que intervienen en la elección de centro escolar y detectar los factores sociodemográficos, económicos y de localización que subyacen tras ellos. Para ello, se ha realizado una encuesta a la demanda potencial de los centros públicos que imparten el segundo ciclo de educación infantil en la ciudad de Valencia. Los resultados indican que el principal criterio de elección de centro escolar es la proximidad entre el hogar y el colegio, y que el modo de desplazamiento más utilizado es el peatonal. From 1995 until 2006 new paleontological excavations were carried out at Venta del Moro (Valencia, Spain), one of the classical Uppermost Miocene (Upper Turolian, MN 13) vertebrate locality of Spain. In the present paper a preliminary synthesis of the methods and main results are presented. Abundant faunal remains were recovered including ten vertebrate taxa no previously recorded from the site. Up to now 43 mammalian species are known from the site. Preliminary list of others groups, as mollusc, are given. The occurrence of foraminifera is reported for the first time.

A fauna of benthonic forarninifera was found in the continental Miocene from Buñol (Valencia, Spain). This fauna was considered as autochthonous, Two species were identified: <i>Rosalina douvillei</i>(CUSHMAN) and <i>Quinqueloculinai seminula</i> (LINNÉ). A few number of planktonic individuals were found. These individuals were refered to the species <i>Globorotalia</i> cf. <i>mayeri</i> CUSHMAN & ELLISOR.
