Hearing Early Modern Music Through the Contemporary

This chapter focuses on how contemporary music practice interacts with early modern1 aesthetics. Two projects, in which Georg Philip Telemann’s solo fantasias are interspersed with contemporary techniques and repertoire, serve as case studies. Firstly, the flutist Felix Renggli commissioned new pieces from 11 contemporary Swiss composers, to be inserted in between Telemann’s 12 Fantasias for Solo Flute. Secondly, violinist Aisha Orazbayeva performed a set of Telemann’s Solo Fantasias for Violin using extended techniques pioneered by Salvatore Sciarrino in his 6 caprices. Turning points in shaping choral conducting practice: six tales of Norwegian conductors’ professional development

Based on narratives on six choral conductors’ unfolding careers, the article investigates significant moments in professional trajectories – turning points – and how these shaped ongoing practices. The empirical material comprises interviews with conductors that represent different pre-conducting platforms – musicologist, music therapist, music educator, instrumentalist, singer, and church musician. Narratives present both an ontological view of experience – lived life is told life – and a methodology where the narrative analysis is the researchers’ integral retelling of fragments and episodes provided by the informants. Author's accepted manuscript. This article explores the idea of audiovisual immersion through the portal of the virtual reality music video. Our focus falls on a close reading of Björk’s video, ‘Family’, which addresses questions of immersion in relation to user-experience, staging, and technological innovation. This article draws on the authors’ responses to the video by considering the implications of VR immersion in a new generation of music video productions. As part of the methodology on offer, a model for music analysis is devised for conceptualising virtual audiovisual space (VAVS) and the inextricable relationships between production and compositional design.

How can the (seemingly isolated) process of practising a musical instrument in the context of practice sessions be seen as enabling students to develop skills “that are needed to keep democracies alive’ (Nussbaum, 2010, p. 2). Collaboration between grunnskole (primary schools) and kulturskole (culture schools) has been promoted in policy documents since the 1980s. In several municipalities, different models for cooperation are being tested. This chapter is based on a study of a specific collaborative project, called “Sentrums-prosjektet”. The purpose of the study was to provide more knowledge about such collaborations. The investigation had a case study design and the data consisted of interviews and participatory observation. Dette vart gjort med mål om å læra meir om kva for fordeler og ulemper slikt tilpassa repertoar kunne føra med seg inn i undervisningssituasjonen. Val av tema, blei valt grunna personlege frustrasjonar knyta til den eksisterande repertoarlitteraturen som finnast for juniorkorps, og korleis denne litteraturen gjorde juniorkorpspraksisen utfordrande å gjennomføra.
