Communication Apprehension in EFL classrooms in Lower Secondary Schools : A case study of English teachers’ awareness of speech anxiety in their own …

2019

Master's thesis education EN502 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis studies educators’ awareness offoreign language anxiety (FLA), specifically communication apprehension,in Norwegian lower secondary schools. Communication is a key skillnecessary to masteringforeign languages, yet it is also the most anxiety inducing skill forforeign language learners(Horwitz et al., 1986).Despite the many challenges in learning a newlanguage, steps can be taken to ensure that students learn effectively. However, educators must first be aware of FLA and its effects on their students. Previous research shows that speech anxiety is the biggest impediment to the learning process (Arnold & Brown, 1999). FLA …

"Er det riktige det viktige? Literacy-syn og kvalitetstrekk i kommersielle abc-apper for norskspråklige førskolebarn."

2020

2018

Source at https://doi.org/10.7203/Normas.v8i1.13437.

A Design-Oriented Analysis of Multimodality in English as a Foreign Language

2018

This empirical article investigates multimodality in English as a foreign language, both as seen in the use of multimodal texts as artefacts and pedagogical texts for learning, and through an analysis of the multimodal learning designs. We present observations from a year 10 classroom in Norway that worked with the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, 2007). We explore a four-week teaching sequence, asking how different modes were involved when the educator designed literacy events around the novel, and how multimodality is present in the students’ meaning making. Our aim is to make explicit and discuss some of the silent literacy practices in English teaching at l…

Music in the Dark: Soundscapes in Christiane Ritter’s A Woman in The Polar Night

2020

In A Woman in the Polar Night (Eine Frau erlebt die Polarnacht, 1938), Christiane Ritter, a well-to-do Austrian housewife, describes her experience as the first central European woman to overwinter on Svalbard (1934–35). Ritter’s prose is extraordinary in its lyrical simplicity, and in German editions the text is interspersed with her paintings of the scenes that at first were so alien and changing, yet became so familiar and loved.
Although stationed on the north coast of Svalbard with minimal human contact and without any recourse to the music with which Ritter had been surrounded in Austria, A Woman in the Polar Night is a text that is full of references to sound, natural sounds th…

Nye litteraturer: Litterære tekstpraksiser hos voksne innvandrere i norsk grunnskoleopplæring

2020

2020

This paper is concerned with the apparent absence of a ‘systemic address’ for the functional category irrealis in grammatical descriptions of English, Danish and German within the framework of systemic functional linguistics (SFL). Based on a thorough discussion of our understanding of this functional grammatical concept, we present a summary of the lexicogrammatical potential of irrealis in English, Danish and German. By comparing and contrasting the three languages, we find among them equivalent connections to other grammatical systems. The existing SFL-descriptions of English, Danish and German offer some proposals with regard to irrealis, but these, to some degree, contradict our findin…

Are future L3-German teachers prepared to increase students' metacognition and crosslinguistic awareness in the multilingual classroom? An analysis o…

2021

The multilingual turn in Europe requires an adaption of foreign language teaching approaches. This study provides theoretical and empirical reasons to treat crosslinguistic awareness as a potentially beneficial metacognitive tool for multilingual language learners. Furthermore, it explores whether future foreign language teachers are introduced to crosslinguistic awareness as a teaching tool in university teacher education. A sample of 27 national and local documents concerning parts of German foreign language teacher education in Denmark and Norway were analyzed for concepts such as multilingualism, metacognition, and crosslinguistic awareness. The document analysis showed that the three m…
