This study focuses on the entrepreneurial longevity of a family business by observing an old sawmill. The activities within the firm are influenced by the change in the Finnish Society during the 20th century and the decline of the village community. The challenge for surviving at the periphery and maintaining operations in a single family over generations is cultural knowledge. Ethnographic approach through thick descriptions provides a chance to follow the change in everyday customs and interpret its meanings, and these are evaluated using critical methodology. Improvement of partition coefficients determination of aroma compounds in food matrices by the phase ratio variation method

The Phase Ratio Variation (PRV) method is a very valuable method commonly used for liquid/vapor partition coefficients data acquisition of aroma compounds. Nevertheless, some limits are linked to this method, especially for volatile compounds. A careful examination of the PRV equation leads us to propose the following expression: 1/Cvap-real =(nliq/n0) x 1/Cvap-ideal = (nliq/n0) x (1/KC0 + (1/Co) b), We performed an examination for two cases of K values (K1=0.001 and K2=0.05), putting forward that a carefully choice of b range values is crucial for reliability of the regression calculation 1/A versus b.

Responses of zooplankton to cane sugar additions to a small humic lake, Alinen Mustajärvi

The response to projected increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading to boreal lakes is being studied in lake Alinen Mustajärvi, a small humic lake in southern Finland, where labile DOC concentration has been artificially increased during 2008 and 2009 by monthly additions of cane sugar. As part of this wider project, in this thesis the responses of the zooplankton community to cane sugar addition were studied. Varying plant protein sources in the diet of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax differently affects lipid metabolism and deposition

The liver activity of lipogenic enzymes, the lipid content in various tissues, and plasma lipid levels of major, were measured in sea bass (D. labrax) fed over 96 days either a, fish meal-based control diet or preparations where 70% of fish meal protein was replaced by wheat gluten singly or in combination with pea or soybean meals. Relative to the controls, sea bass fed the wheat gluten-based diet resulted in stimulated lipogenesis in liver and increased lipid deposition in muscle.
