Excluding the Poor : globalisation and educational systems

2002

02062; International audience; The article starts from the fact that one billion adults are illiterate world-wide, that more than 100 million children of school age are not schooled, and that the democratisation of the access to education is often only rhetorical. On the basis of available statistics it tackles successively three questions. First, who finances education and how much do they spend? Secondly, what resources or means are devoted to the education of an individual, and how can these data be evaluated. And finally, do the inequalities between individuals, social groups or nations tend to de- or increase with respect to education access. It will be shown that, for example, in deve…

Poverty and mortality of children under five in Niger : trends 1998-2012

2021

Questions of the well-being of populations in general, and in particular health, have raised global interest for several decades. By way of illustration One of the missions of the 1948 constitution, namely "to advance action in favor of the health and well-being of mothers and children". The various international conferences from Almata –Ata (1978) to that of New York 2000 for the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals of 2015 have reiterated and emphasized the aspects of health and poverty. Niger, a country located in sub-Saharan Africa, continental and landlocked, one of the largest countries in West Africa with 1,267,000 km2, has subscribed to all these intern…

Urban Energy Hubs and Microgrids: Smart Energy Planning for Cities

2017

In this chapter, we try to connect the urban design features with energy consumption and consequent pollution parameters. After a review of a selected set of approaches to Urban Energy Systems study with a special focus on electrical power systems, urban energy systems are proposed as networks of multi-source hybrid energy hubs, where different energy flows are collected at the same bus and can be stored, delivered or transformed as needed. Resources at the hub and infrastructures interact with each other; therefore, both definition and boundaries of such energy systems at urban level are difficult to be clearly outlined. Similarly, the possibility to generate new operational models based o…

2015

The conquest of Europe, first by Napoleon and then by Hitler, was accompanied by the systematic plunder of artistic works. This tactic was in keeping with the logic of classical warfare, aiming, in other words, to humiliate the vanquished and exalt the victors. Recent publications enable us to investigate this phenomenon anew. Art is undeniably at the heart of the symbolic systems of authoritarian states, and the artistic choices are very revealing as to the nature of those regimes. When the conflict is over, the restitution of the plundered works of art gives rise to important questions in the ransacked countries, leading to a reflection on their own heritage and therefore on their identit…

Chaperonotherapy for Alzheimer’s Disease: Focusing on HSP60

2015

This review will analyze growing evidence suggesting a convergence between two major areas of research: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and chaperonopathies. While AD is a widely recognized medical, public health, and social problem, the chaperonopathies have not yet been acknowledged as a related burden of similar magnitude. However, recent evidence collectively indicates that such possibility exists in that AD, or at least some forms of it, may indeed be a chaperonopathy. The importance of considering this possibility cannot be overemphasized since it provides a novel point of view to examine AD and potentially suggests new therapeutic avenues. In this review, we focus on the mitochondrial chape…
