Fast Decentralized Linear Functions via Successive Graph Shift Operators
2019
Decentralized signal processing performs learning tasks on data distributed over a multi-node network which can be represented by a graph. Implementing linear transformations emerges as a key task in a number of applications of decentralized signal processing. Recently, some decentralized methods have been proposed to accomplish that task by leveraging the notion of graph shift operator, which captures the local structure of the graph. However, existing approaches have some drawbacks such as considering special instances of linear transformations, or reducing the family of transformations by assuming that a shift matrix is given such that a subset of its eigenvectors spans the subspace of i…
Linking News Value Theory With Online Deliberation: How News Factors and Illustration Factors in News Articles Affect the Deliberative Quality of Use…
2018
Previous research suggests that distinct characteristics of news articles, such as their news factors, account for the different participation rates in comment sections as well as the degree of interactivity among the discussants. In this study, this assumption is tested in the Facebook environment and extended to the analysis of how news factors (i.e., event characteristics) and illustration factors (i.e., characteristics resulting from a specific journalistic editing) of news articles predict the inclusiveness of discussions, as well as the occurrence of civility, rationality, and deliberative interactivity in user comments. A content analysis of 619 news articles and 11,218 related user…
The race to educational reform in the USA: the race to the top
2011
From the cognitive perspective of embodiment and relying mostly on the powerful and revealing tool of metaphor, we approach the issue of education in the Obama administration's discourse trying to unveil the ideological preferences hidden behind the use of the different metaphors. It is assumed that this body of metaphors will contribute to the political and cultural understanding of such strategic issue to a nation. The analysis of speeches on education by leading figures plus the media reflection of educational problems (Washington Post) will let us see from a close distance how education is talked about. After the analysis of the four metaphors, it will be seen that traditional values su…
Communicating environmental science beyond academia: Stylistic patterns of newsworthiness in popular science journalism
2017
Science communication in online media is a discursive domain where science-related content is often expressed through styles characteristic of popular journalism. This article aims to characterize some dominant stylistic patterns in magazine articles devoted to environmental issues by identifying the devices used to enhance newsworthiness, given the fact that for some readers environmental topics may no longer seem engaging. The analytic perspective is an adaptation of the newsworthiness framework that has been applied in news discourse studies. The material is a sample of the 38 most-read environment-oriented articles in the online version of the international science magazine New Scientis…
What Creates Interactivity in Online News Discussions? An Exploratory Analysis of Discussion Factors in User Comments on News Items
2014
While the social, political, and journalistic relevance of user comments on online news items has been discussed intensively, no study has tried to examine why some online news discussions are more interactive than others. Based on the rationale of news value theory, this study argues that so-called discussion factors in user comments indicate general relevance to later users to respond to them. Qualitative interviews with users who comment on news stories online and a quantitative content analysis of 1,580 user comments showed that the discussion factors uncertainty, controversy, comprehensibility, negativity, and personalization can explain interactivity in news discussions. Further, diff…
Validation of the simplified Animal Naming Test as primary screening tool for the diagnosis of covert hepatic encephalopathy
2019
Diagnosis of covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE) is time consuming in clinical practice. Recently, a new diagnostic tool - the simplified Animal Naming Test (S-ANT1) - was presented with promising results in an Italian cohort. The aim of the present study was to validate S-ANT1 in a cohort of cirrhotic patients from a German tertiary referral centre.143 cirrhotic patients and 37 healthy controls were enrolled. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) grade 1 (HE1) was clinically diagnosed according to the West-Haven Criteria. Critical flicker frequency and Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score were used to detect minimal HE (MHE). All participants were additionally examined by S-ANT1.58 (40.6%) pati…
Therapeutic management and evolution of chronic hepatitis B: does HIV still have an impact? The EPIB 2012 study
2015
EA Pôle MERS Hors CT hors EJ; International audience; Background & Aims: To compare the management of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and its evolution over time in currently followed HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients. Methods: A total of 709 consecutive patients with past or present positive HBs antigenemia seen in October 2012 in 19 French participating centres were included. The data were retrospectively collected from the first visit onwards through standardized questionnaires. Results: Chronic hepatitis B was less often assessed in the 299 HIV-positive patients, who were older, more likely to be male, excessive alcohol drinkers and HBe antigen-, HCV- and HDV-positive. They were also fol…
Aksjologiczne podstawy samorządu terytorialnego
2021
On the Construction of Lusternik-Schnirelmann Critical Values with Application to Bifurcation Problems
1987
An iterative method to construct Lusternik-Schnirelmann critical values is presented. Examples of its use to obtain numerical solutions to nonlinear eigenvalue problems and their bifurcation branches are given. peerReviewed
Acid Dnase Activities In Peripheral, Mononuclear Blood Cells: A Possible Parameter To Detect Proliferating Cell Populations
1992
After electrophoresis in DNA -containing polyacrylamide gels, two acid DNase activities can be detected in peripheral, mononuclear cells of the human blood. One of these acid DNase activities correlates with cell proliferation; its isoelectrical point is at pI 7.4. By means of this DNase activity, a quantity of less than 1% leukemic cells can be detected. The increased acid DNase activity can indicate the proliferation of malignant cell populations and possibly the proliferation of cell populations during immunological reactions
