In the skeletal muscle of patients with mitochondrial myopathies (Kearns-Sayre syndrome and chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia) and in the heart and skeletal muscle of healthy persons cells lacking cytochrome c oxidase are found. The respiratory-defective cells have the following features in common: onset of the defect at juvenile or adult age; progressive character of the defect with increasing age; and focal pattern of respiratory-deficient cells (fibers). A statistic mutation of mtDNA in affected cells is suggested to cause the defect of mitochondrial function. Steroidal saponins from Raphia vinifera and their cytotoxic activity

Abstract Phytochemical analysis of the fruits of Raphia vinifera led to the isolation of four new steroidal saponins (1–4), along with six known secondary metabolites (6–10). The structures of the isolated compounds were determined based on the analyses of NMR and mass spectrometric data, and chemical degradation reactions. Among the compounds tested, 1 and 4 showed the most promising cytotoxic activity against the drug-sensitive CCRF-CEM leukemia cell lines, with IC50 values of 3.55 µM and 7.14 µM, respectively.
Virtual Combinatorial Syntheses and Computational Screening of New Potential Anti-Herpes Compounds

The activity of new anti-HSV-1 chemical structures, designed by virtual combinatorial chemical synthesis and selected by a computational screening, is determined by an in vitro assay. A virtual library of phenol esters and anilides was formed from two databases of building blocks: one with carbonyl fragments and the other containing both substituted phenoxy and phenylamino fragments. The library of virtually assembled compounds was computationally screened, and those compounds which were selected by our mathematical model as active ones were finally synthesized and tested. The aim of this study was to give reference values for the frequency of morphological sperm abnormalities present in the semen from non-experimental cynomolgus monkeys as well as for the dimensions of sperm heads. Spermatozoa from the liquid portion of electroejaculates from 14 cynomolgus monkeys were air-dried as smears, fixed, and stained with Harris's Haematoxylin and subjected to visual analysis of morphology and computer-aided analysis of ten morphometric variables. The objective of this thesis was on the one hand to identify the motives for dropout handballers and the basketballers Syrian women and to test on the other hand three theoretical models which explain the dropout of sport. A first study (N = 402) attempted to identify the reasons for dropout for these players. The results showed that the players estimate that certain reasons (e.g., to get pregnant, to have a husband which does not make it possible to his wife any more to make sport) are very important to give up sport. This study aimed to explore which offensive variables best discriminate the ball possession duration according to players specific role (defenders, midfielders, attackers) during a Gk+3vs3+Gk football small-sided games. Fifteen under-15 players (age 13.2±1.0 years, playing experience 4.2±1.0 years) were grouped according to their positions (team of defenders, n = 5; team of midfielders, n = 7; team of attackers, n = 3). Summary Background: The partial directed coherence (PDC) is commonly used to assess in the frequency domain the existence of causal relations between two time series measured in conjunction with a set of other time series. Although the multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model traditionally used for PDC computation accounts only for lagged effects, instantaneous effects cannot be neglected in the analysis of cardiovascular time series. Digital simulation of multivariate earthquake ground motions

In this paper a new generation procedure of multivariate earthquake ground motion is presented. The technique takes full advantage of the decomposition of the power spectral density matrix by means of its eigenvectors. The application of the method to multivariate ground accelerations shows some very interesting physical properties which allows one to obtain significant reduction of the computational effort in the generation of sample functions relative to multivariate earthquake ground motion processes. Abstract In this paper, for the case of the fluid particle velocity, a procedure that substantially reduces the computational effort to generate a multivariate stochastic process is proposed. It is shown that, for a fully coherent wave field, it is possible to decompose the Power Spectral Density (PSD) matrix into the eigenvectors of the matrix itself. This leads to generate each field's process as independent, and the time generation increases linearly with the processes' number in the field. A numerical example to evaluate the statistical properties, in terms of correlation and cross-correlation functions, of the processes is also presented.
