First Steps of µTAS in Latvia

1995

Owing to participation of Latvian and Swedish scientists in the field of chemically sensitive FET and MOS structures it was possible to utilize the technological facilities of the Microelectronics enterprise in Latvia in making an integrated smart sensor as a matrix of chemically sensitive FETs by using silicon based microtechnology. Thereby the first steps of µTAS in Latvia are made in the direction of integration of solid state ionic materials with FET and MOS structures to develop new chemically sensitive structures and systems.

Numerical study of the growth conditions in an MOCVD reactor: application to the epitaxial growth of HgTe

Abstract In order to analyse the epitaxial growth by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of mercury telluride, HgTe, a 2D numerical model has been developed to simulate the gas flow in a horizontal MOCVD reactor. This model takes into account the Navier–Stokes equations coupled with the heat transfer and mass transport of chemical species. For the mathematical resolution of the governing equations a commercial solver, which can be run in a conventional personal computer, has been used. Observations of high concentrations of I2and IO in coastal air supporting iodine-oxide driven coastal new particle formation

[1] Theoretical studies have predicted that concentrations of gaseous I2 and IO of the order of 80–100 ppt and 40–50 ppt, respectively, are required in coastal air to account for photochemically-driven coastal new-particle formation events to occur. However, measurements reported to date (i.e., ∼20 ppt I2, ≤ 10 ppt IO) have not supported the required model predictions. Here, we present measurements of high concentrations of I2 and IO in N.E. Atlantic marine air on the west coast of Ireland. The maximum mixing ratios of daytime I2 and IO over the seaweed beds during low tide were 302 ppt and 35 ppt, respectively. In dicussing this gaseous suspension of solid and liquid particles, it is customary to include all gases except water vapor, and all solid and liquid particles except hydrometeors, i.e., cloud and raindrops, and ice particles.

Heterogeneous nucleation at a wall near a wetting transition: a Monte Carlo test of the classical theory

While for a slightly supersaturated vapor the free energy barrier ΔF(hom)(*), which needs to be overcome in a homogeneous nucleation event, may be extremely large, nucleation is typically much easier at the walls of the container in which the vapor is located. While no nucleation barrier exists if the walls are wet, for incomplete wetting of the walls, described via a nonzero contact angle Θ, classical theory predicts that nucleation happens through sphere-cap-shaped droplets attracted to the wall, and their formation energy is ΔF(het)(*) = ΔF(hom)(*)f(Θ), with f(Θ) = (1-cosΘ)(2)(2+cosΘ)/4. Epitaxy of thin films of the Heusler compound

Abstract Epitaxial thin films of the highly spin polarized Heusler compound Co 2 Cr 0.6 Fe 0.4 Al are deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. It is shown by XRD and TEM investigations how the use of an Fe buffer layer on MgO(1 0 0) substrates supports the growth of highly ordered Co 2 Cr 0.6 Fe 0.4 Al at low deposition temperatures. The as-grown samples show a relatively large ordered magnetic moment of μ ≃ 3.0 μ B / f . u . providing evidence for a low level of disorder.

Reactivity of Nickel(II) Porphyrins in oCVD Processes—Polymerisation, Intramolecular Cyclisation and Chlorination

Abstract Oxidative chemical vapour deposition of (5,15‐diphenylporphyrinato)nickel(II) (NiDPP) with iron(III) chloride as oxidant yielded a conjugated poly(metalloporphyrin) as a highly coloured thin film, which is potentially useful for optoelectronic applications. This study clarified the reactive sites of the porphyrin monomer NiDPP by HRMS, UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium of Binary Mixtures of 1-Butanol + Chlorobenzene and 2-Butanol + Chlorobenzene at 20 and 100 kPa

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria were obtained for 1-butanol + chlorobenzene and for 2-butanol + chlorobenzene systems at 20 and 100 kPa using a dynamic still. The experimental error in temperature was ±0.1 K, in pressure ±0.01 kPa and ±0.1 kPa for the experiments carried out at 20 and 100 kPa, respectively, and in liquid and vapor composition ±0.001. The two systems satisfy the point-to-point thermodynamic consistency test. Both systems show a positive deviation from ideality. The data were correlated with the Wilson equation.

Cloud-screening algorithm for ENVISAT/MERIS multispectral images

This paper presents a methodology for cloud screening of multispectral images acquired with the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on-board the Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). The method yields both a discrete cloud mask and a cloud-abundance product from MERIS level-lb data on a per-pixel basis. The cloud-screening method relies on the extraction of meaningful physical features (e.g., brightness and whiteness), which are combined with atmospheric-absorption features at specific MERIS-band locations (oxygen and watervapor absorptions) to increase the cloud-detection accuracy. Summary The capability to accurately monitor and describe daily evapotranspiration (ET) in a cost effective manner is generally attributed to hydrological models. However, continuous solution of energy and water balance provides precise estimations only when a detailed knowledge of sub-surface characteristics is available.
