NO nu A plus T2K: The race for the neutrino mass hierarchy

2006

The determination of the ordering of the neutrino masses (the hierarchy) is probably a crucial prerequisite to understand the origin of lepton masses and mixings and to establish their relationship to the analogous properties in the quark sector. Here, we follow an alternative strategy to the usual neutrino--antineutrino comparison in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments: we exploit the combination of the neutrino-only data from the NOvA and the T2K experiments by performing these two off-axis experiments at different distances but at the same $/L$, where $$ is the mean neutrino energy and $L$ is the baseline. This would require a minor adjustment to the proposed off-axis angle fo…

Stability of the VEV hierarchy and Higgs boson invisibility in majoron models

1988

Abstract We study the stability of the lepton-number breaking VEV under radiative corrections in the doublet and triplet majoron models, including the effects of a heavy top quark. We find that it is possible to maintain the hierarchy between the VEV's, at the one-loop level, by fine tuning the ratio of two coupling constants in the Higgs potential. For a top quark heavier than 50–60 GeV the required relation depends strongly on the top mass. We use this relation to show that the decay mode of the neutral Higgs boson to majorons may be the dominant one for a wide range of the Higgs mass, thus making its detection, in this class of models, more problematic.

Measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets channel using the ideogram method

2007

A measurement of the top quark mass using events with one charged lepton, missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state, collected by the D0 detector from p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, is presented. A constrained fit is used to fully reconstruct the kinematics of the events. For every event a top quark mass likelihood is calculated taking into account all possible jet assignments and the probability that an event is signal or background. Lifetime-based identification of b jets is employed to enhance the separation between t-tbar signal and background from other physics processes and to improve the assignment of the observed jets to the q…

Three-Loop Quark Jet Function.

2018

We calculate the massless quark jet function to three-loop order. The quark jet function is a universal ingredient in SCET factorization for many collider and decay processes with quark initiated final state jets. Our three-loop result contributes to the resummation for observables probing the invariant mass of final state quark jets at primed next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. It represents the first complete three-loop result for a factorization ingredient describing collinear radiation. Furthermore it constitutes a major component of the N-jettiness subtraction method at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy, which eventually may enable the calculation of full…

Covariant trace formalism for heavy mesons-wave top-wave transitions

1993

Heavy meson,s- top-wave, weakb→c transitions are studied in the context of the heavy quark effective theory using covariant meson wave functions. We use the trace formalism to evaluate the weak transitions. As expected from heavy quark symmetry, the eight transitions betweens- andp-wave states are described in terms of only two universal form factors which are given in terms of explicit wave function overlap integrals. We present our results in terms of both invariant and helicity amplitudes. Using our helicity amplitude expressions we discuss rate formulae, helicity structure functions and joint angular decay distributions in the decays $$\bar B \to D^{**} ( \to (D,D^* ) + \pi ) + W^ - ( \…

Zb(10610) and Zb′(10650) decays in a covariant quark model

2017

We present a calculation of the strong decays of the exotic states ${Z}_{b}(10610)$ and ${Z}_{b}^{\ensuremath{'}}(10650)$ using a covariant quark model. We use a molecular-type four-quark current for the coupling of the ${Z}_{b}(10610)$ and ${Z}_{b}^{\ensuremath{'}}(10650)$ to the constituent heavy and light quarks.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b -Tagged Jets at s=13  TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

2021

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no $b$-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full Run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. A four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks ($b,s$) and two leptons ($ee$ or $\mu\mu$), inspired by the $B$-meson decay anomalies, is used as a…

Charge asymmetry of top quarks

2010

The LHC is a promising machine to discover new physics in the top sector. There are several models that predict the existence of heavy colored resonances decaying to top quarks in the TeV energy range. The production of such resonances might generate a sizable charge asymmetry of top versus antitop quarks. At the Tevatron, a 2 sigma discrepancy with the SM prediction for the forward--backward asymmetry has been found, boosting a renewed interest for this kind of models. We consider a toy model with general flavour dependent couplings of the resonance to quarks, of both vector and axial-vector kind and investigate the possible constraints on the coupling space from the measurement of the asy…

A solution to the strong CP problem transforming the theta angle to the KM CP-violating phase

2010

It is shown that in the scheme with a rotating fermion mass matrix (i.e. one with a scale-dependent orientation in generation space) suggested earlier for explaining fermion mixing and mass hierarchy, the theta angle term in the QCD action of topological origin can be eliminated by chiral transformations, while giving still nonzero masses to all quarks. Instead, the effects of such transformations get transmitted by the rotation to the CKM matrix as the KM phase giving, for theta of order unity, a Jarlskog invariant typically of order 10(-5), as experimentally observed. Strong and weak CP violations appear then as just two facets of the same phenomenon.
