Science and news articles on mirror neurons: two degrees of popularization

The paper deals with the linguistic strategies used by authors with a different degree of specialised expertise (scientists, experts, science and general journalists) to popularize and re-contextualize the mirror neuron discovery in the online Scientific American and New York Times versions. In particular, aiming at a comparison between the two journals, the authors focused on those linguistic and interdiscoursive strategies adopted to popularize three main aspects for each article: the definition of mirror neurons, the explanation of their activation in the brain and their function in social interaction.

Ces dernières décennies, l’Afrique de l’Est souffre d’une longue et lente détérioration pluviométrique. De 2007 à 2011, la ville de Djibouti a enregistré un déficit de 73% des précipitations moyennes annuelles par rapport à la moyenne de 30 ans (1981-2010). Pour caractériser la sécheresse actuelle, nous analysons une série pluviométrique reconstruite pour Djibouti-Ville de 1901 à 2013, les données de terrain permettant d’illustrer les impacts de ces variations pluviométriques. Nel 1535 Martin Lutero scrive il corale natalizio "Vom Himmel hoch da komm' ich her", basandosi sulla melodia di un'antico canto popolare tedesco. Questo brano ricorre varie volte nell'opera compositiva di J.S. Bach e costituisce il presupposto delle "Canonische veraenderungen" per organo BWV 796 e 796a (1748 ca.). Nel 1955 Igor Stravinsky realizza una versione per coro e orchestra dell'opera bachiana che costituisce un esempio emblematico di "musica al quadrato" e di ripensamento creativo di un'opera del passato.

The limit analysis of indefinite plates resting on a continuous elastoplastic medium and subjected to a load distributed over a partial surface with a circular boundary yields the fundamental equation governing the problem. Minimum conditions are set and the solution that supplies the collapse load of the plate-soil system is found by variational calculus.

Focal DNA Copy Number Changes in Neuroblastoma Target MYCN Regulated Genes

Neuroblastoma is an embryonic tumor arising from immature sympathetic nervous system cells. Recurrent genomic alterations include MYCN and ALK amplification as well as recurrent patterns of gains and losses of whole or large partial chromosome segments. A recent whole genome sequencing effort yielded no frequently recurring mutations in genes other than those affecting ALK. However, the study further stresses the importance of DNA copy number alterations in this disease, in particular for genes implicated in neuritogenesis.
