Bloch surface waves engineering in one-dimensional photonic crystals with a chiral cap layer

2019

We investigate the localization properties of surface waves created at the interface between a truncated 1D photonic crystal and homogeneous medium in the presence of a chiral cap layer using the transfer matrix method. The numerical results show that the interface can support surface waves with both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations. We demonstrate that the surface waves can be engineered by varying the chirality parameter of the cap layer, which plays an important role in controlling and localization of surface states. It is shown that the effect of a chirality parameter on surface waves with transverse electric polarization is more remarkable compared with surface…

A new approach for modeling dry deposition velocity of particles

2018

Abstract The dry deposition process is recognized as an important pathway among the various removal processes of pollutants in the atmosphere. In this field, there are several models reported in the literature useful to predict the dry deposition velocity of particles of different diameters but many of them are not capable of representing dry deposition phenomena for several categories of pollutants and deposition surfaces. Moreover, their applications is valid for specific conditions and if the data in that application meet all of the assumptions required of the data used to define the model. In this paper a new dry deposition velocity model based on an electrical analogy schema is propose…

Exploring the use of low-intensity ultrasonics as a tool for assessing the salt content in pork meat products

2015

Meat industry demands non-destructive techniques for the control of the salting process to achieve a homogeneous final salt content in salted meat products. The feasibility of using low-intensity ultrasound for characterizing the salting process of pork meat products was evaluated. The ultrasonic velocity (V) and time of flight (TF) were measured by through-transmission and pulse-echo methods, respectively, in salted meat products. Salting involved an increase of the V in meat muscles and a decrease of the time of flight in whole hams. Measuring the V before and after salting, the salt content could be estimated. Moreover, online monitoring of the salting process by computing the TF could b…

A representation of wind velocity by means of fractional spectral moments

2009

This paper deals with the definition of a new function that is a link between Power Spectral Density (PSD) and correlation function, called the Fractional Spectral Moments function. This is defined as the moment of complex order g of the one-sided PSD. It is shown that by means of this complex function both the correlation function and PSD can be represented with great accuracy.

An outline of shear-sense analysis in high-grade rocks

2006

Ductile shear zones are important in tectonic reconstructions as a source of information on the relative motion of large crustal blocks or plates in the geological past. Methods to interpret fabric in ductile shear zones were mostly developed for low grade rocks where overprinting relations are usually well preserved. However, high grade shear zones are common and dominate in many Precambrian terrains. High grade shear zones should be analysed in a different way from low grade zones. The plane on which shear sense markers should be observed, the vorticity profile plane, is more difficult to find than in low grade shear zones. The most reliable shear sense markers in high grade shear zones a…

Hyper-concentrated flow and surface velocity estimation by digital imaging technique: a study case

2015

This paper investigates the utility of digital imaging technique for performing surface velocity measurements of hyper-concentrated flows. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a scale laboratory flume constructed at the Hydraulic laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospatial and of Materials Engineering (DICAM) – University of Palermo (Italy). In particular the present paper describes the setup of a laboratory test and the applicability of a fully digital imaging approach.

Liquid metal MHD experimental activities for LLCB TBM development

2013

Abstract In Indian Lead Lithium cooled Ceramic Breeder (LLCB) blanket concept, Lead–Lithium (Pb–Li) liquid metal is used to extract heat from its own bulk volume and also from the neighboring solid breeder zones. The moderate flow velocity of Pb–Li inside the module can be significantly modified due to MHD effects, which arise because of the presence of strong toroidal magnetic field. Recently, two MHD experiments have been jointly carried out at Institute of Physics, University of Latvia (IPUL) with hot Pb–Li (∼350 C) as the working fluid under a strong transverse magnetic field of up to ∼4.0 T. The uncoated test sections are made of SS316L material and consist of LLCB TBM relevant flow ge…

Synthesis and support composition effects on CH4 partial oxidation over Ni–CeLa oxides

2015

Abstract Two series of Ni (6 wt%) catalysts supported over CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 and mixed CeO 2 –La 2 O 3 were prepared by co-precipitation and by wet-impregnation. The effect of the two Ni loading procedures on the catalyst structural properties was investigated by XRD, TPR and XPS. The catalytic behavior of the catalysts was tested in the methane partial oxidation reaction performed at 1 atm in a temperature range of 400–800 °C using dilute feed gas mixture with CH 4 /O 2  = 2 and gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 ml g −1  h −1 . Total methane combustion was observed within the 450 °C ≤  T ≤ 650 °C temperature range. Above 650 °C partial oxidation of methane started to occur, reaching at 80…

QT interval heterogeneities induced through local epicardial warming/cooling. An experimental study

2014

[EN] ntroduction and objectives Abnormal QT interval durations and dispersions have been associated with increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias. The present study examines the possible arrhythmogenic effect of inducing QT interval variations through local epicardial cooling and warming. Methods In 10 isolated rabbit hearts, the temperatures of epicardial regions of the left ventricle were modified in a stepwise manner (from 22 °C to 42 °C) with simultaneous electrogram recording in these regions and in others of the same ventricle. QT and activation-recovery intervals were determined during sinus rhythm, whereas conduction velocity and ventricular arrhythmia induction were determined dur…

The Evolution of Disk Winds from a Combined Study of Optical and Infrared Forbidden Lines

2020

We analyze high-resolution (dv=<10km/s) optical and infrared spectra covering the [OI] 6300 angstrom and [NeII] 12.81 micron lines from a sample of 31 disks in different evolutionary stages. Following work at optical wavelengths, we use Gaussian profiles to fit the [NeII] lines and classify them into HVC (LVC) if the line centroid is more (less) blueshifted than 30 km/s with respect to the stellar radial velocity. Unlike for the [OI] where a HVC is often accompanied by a LVC, all 17 sources with a [NeII] detection have either a HVC or a LVC. [NeII] HVCs are preferentially detected toward high accretors (Macc > 10$^{-8}$ Msun/yr) while LVCs are found in sources with low Macc, low [OI] …
