Usability challenges in digital learning solutions
2015
Usability is a key element in successful software. Ensuring the technical usability of a learning solution enables users to focus on their main task, learning. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the results of heuristic usability evaluations of digital learning solutions. Heuristic evaluations were conducted on 24 digital learning solutions from one country (Finland) and two country groups (Asian countries and Spanish speaking countries) concentrating on the usability of the user interface of each evaluated solution. The main results of this study indicate that a few heuristics cover the majority of all usability problems (UPs) observed in learning solutions, but these heuristics c…

Kirjoittamisen arkipäiväistäminen Pentti Saarikosken ja Mirkka Rekolan runoudessa
2014
Writing as Part of the Everyday in Pentti Saarikoski’s and Mirkka Rekola’s Poetry This article examines the processes of writing as part of the everyday in Pentti Saarikoski’s kuljen missa kuljen and Mirkka Rekola’s Ilo ja epasymmetria, both published in 1965. I argue that both collections make this process visible, and both authors thus actively participate in the discussion about poetry in the 1960s through their poetry. While Saarikoski’s poetry was appreciated as communicative, democratic poetry, Rekola’s writing was considered as old-fashioned modernist poetry – a characterization associated at the time also with Finnish-Swedish poetry. In this article, I show that despite the attitude…
Anglicisms in Tourism Language Corpora 2.0
2015
Abstract The world of tourism has evolved in recent times because of the impact of the Internet. Tourism enterprises have expanded their commercial point of view and have found a faster way to reach clients through increased tourism advertising on the Web. Along with this increase in advertising are the opportunities to study the lexicon of tourism. One of the main points in this lexicon is the use of foreign words, especially the use of Anglicisms due to English's status as a universal language in these contexts. In this article, we will study the Anglicisms in Spanish tourism from these points of view: • why these words are used; • in what context they are used; • if we use original forei…
Dynamic electric field assisted multi-dimensional liquid chromatography of biological samples
2005
Complex biological samples require very high resolution separation strategies. The platform introduced here capitalises on the hyphenation of liquid chromatographic (LC) and electric potential gradient electrochromatographic multi-dimensional separation genres. First-dimension selectivity is provided by simultaneous size exclusion (SEC) and strong cation exchange (SCX) chromatography modes, while the second dimension comprises reversed phase (RP) characteristics in a dynamic (time-variant) electric field. The time-variant potential gradient with reversal of polarity is applied across the second dimension monolithic capillary throughout the duration of the solvent strength gradient elution. …

Drawback of ICA Procedure on EEG: Polarity Indeterminacy at Local Optimization
2008
Independent component analysis (ICA) has been extensively applied to reject artifacts in electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing. The first step is to extract the independent component activations from the electrode records, and then project the desired components back to the electrodes. After the composition of the projected component is analyzed in details under ICA procedure, this study shows that since ICA may extract some source components at the local optimization in high-dimensional EEG signal space, the artificial polarity indeterminacy may happen on the projected component at some electrodes. By numerical simulations, this issue also exhibits that this polarity ambiguity occ…
Polarity-reversal subduction zone initiation triggered by buoyant plateau obstruction
2022
Abstract Oceanic lithosphere worldwide is younger than ca. 200 Myr, suggesting that it must have been globally recycled by the recurrent formation of new subduction zones since the existence of subduction on Earth. However, postulated subduction zone initiation processes remain difficult to explain in many cases, and the specific geodynamic conditions under which these might occur are still largely unknown. We here use numerical models driven by the internal force balance of a subduction system to better understand the (geo)dynamics governing (intra-oceanic) polarity-reversal subduction zone initiation. This initiation mode assumes that the birth of a new subduction zone could be triggered …
"Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" dzieło Józefa Wybickiego. Pamiętamy o polskim hymnie i jego twórcy
2022
Among national symbols, next to the emblem and colors, the anthem occupies a special place. National symbols have contributed to building a sense of identity for centuries and belonging. They express love for the homeland and integrate society. Mazurek Dąbrowski (Poland Is Not Yet Lost) has been a symbol of the society’s hope and faith in the revival of the state almost since its creation. In 2022, the Year of Józef Rufina Wybicki was celebrated in Poland, who was the author of the words of the song, which has been the anthem of Poland for nearly 100 years. For this reason, Wybicki’s biography was recalled in the anniversary article. As well as the circumstances of making him the patron of …
